Book excerpt: In 1570's New Kingdom of Granada (modern Colombia), a new generation of mestizo (half-Spanish, half-indigenous) men sought positions of increasing power in the colony's two largest cities. In response, Spanish nativist factions zealously attacked them as unequal and unqualified, unleashing an intense political battle that lasted almost two decades. At stake was whether membership in the small colonial community and thus access to its most lucrative professions should depend on limpieza de sangre (blood purity) or values-based integration (Christian citizenship). A Tale of Two Granadas examines the vast, trans-Atlantic transformation of political ideas about subjecthood that ultimately allowed some colonial mestizos and indios ladinos (acculturated natives) to establish urban citizenship alongside Spaniards in colonial Santafé de Bogotá and Tunja. In a spirit of comparison, it illustrates how some of the descendants of Spain's last Muslims appealed to the same new conceptions of citizenship to avoid disenfranchisement in the face of growing prejudice.

Book excerpt: Public medicine, popular education, state employment agencies, the diffusion of scientific and technical knowledge, the dissemination of information by the government—all these things are an indispensable part of the modern state. All were proposed in the seventeenth century by Théophraste Renaudot, who felt they were necessary to meet the new social realities of the time. With the support of Cardinal Richelieu he was able to attack the problem of poverty in a new way by setting up the Bureau d'Adresse, which grew from an employment agency to a clearing- house for many social services, including free medical care. The discussions that were held there made it the most popular academy in Europe and the forerunner of the Académie Françise. At the same time Renaudot was editing and publishing the Gazette, an important instrument of government propaganda. Howard M. Solomon considers each aspect of Renaudot's multi-dimensional career and examines the relationship between his activities and the needs and methods of the ministries of Richelieu and Mazarin. While they had Richelieu's support all his novel schemes flourished, but only the Gazette survived the Cardinal's death. Originally published in 1972. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the complexity and variety of victualling systems in early modern Italy. For a long time, the historiography of urban provisioning systems in late medieval and early modern times featured a conceptual opposition between victualling administration and the market. In this book, on the contrary, the term ‘victualling system’ (sistema annonario) is employed according to its historical meaning, designating an organised set of public and private channels, evolved typically in urban contexts, for the procurement and distribution of the goods essential for the daily life of common people. According to this definition, specifically, a victualling system included also the market, as one of the different channels for the procurement and distribution of goods. What characterises the Italian case in the European context are both the earliness of these institutions and the long-lasting political and economic fragmentation of the peninsula: these factors determined the great variety and complexity of the solutions adopted. In order to show these features, the analysis focuses on four central issues: the configuration of systems, institutional pragmatism and variety, articulation of circuits, and plurality of actors. The seven relevant case-studies included in this book, all based on direct archival research, cover a wide range of geographical contexts and institutional arrangements, from the North to the South of the peninsula, and include both large-sized cities (Milan and Rome), medium-sized cities (Bergamo, Vicenza, and Ferrara), and entire regions (the March of Ancona, and Sicily). This allows the reader to appreciate regional and local differences in detail, making this book of interest for academics and scholars in economic, social, and urban history.

Dans un monde plus que jamais unifié, notamment par le marché, et marqué également par le paradoxe apparent de la marginalisation et des exclusions, les historiens se devaient d'apporter leur contribution à la compréhension de la mondialisation, concept relativement récent qui recouvre des réalités résultant d'un processus historique de longue portée. Les contributions présentées au congrès de Bamako, ouvert aux historiens de toutes origines, s'articulent, au-delà de leur grande diversité, autour de quelques grandes préoccupations. Elles tentent d'abord d'établir un bilan critique de l'historiographie africaine de ces dernières années, suscitant ainsi le débat sur l'exercice du métier d'historien, et son " utilité " éventuelle. Quelle histoire ? Pour quel public ? Et pour quoi faire ? De la réponse à ces questions dépend en partie la pertinence de nos approches de la mondialisation. Les contributions ouvrent enfin sur les perspectives africaines de la mondialisation actuelle. Les enjeux, le défi de la réalisation effective de l'unité africaine, les perspectives ouvertes à cet effet par la création récente de l'Union africaine et la contribution possible des sciences sociales au renforcement d'une conscience historique africaine en faveur de cette intégration sont autant de thèmes abordés que de chantiers ouverts.
