It involves computation of arrival cost, a penalty term, based on the MHE cost function. Minimization of this arrival cost is done through various methods. All these methods use nonlinear programming optimization technique which gives the estimate. The main idea of MHE revolves around minimizing the estimation cost function. The cost function is dependent on prediction error computation from data and arrival cost summarization. The major issue that hampers the MHE is choosing the arrival cost for ensuring stability of the overall estimation and computational time. In order to attain this stability, this thesis incorporates dynamic programming algorithm to estimate MHE cost function. Dynamic programming is an algorithm for solving complex problems. The MHE cost function algorithm has been modied based on dynamic programming algorithm in order to ensure stability of the overall estimation. In order to apply this algorithm, a specic non-linear lter, particle lter is used for the initialization of MHE. The reason of using particle lter for initialization of MHE is due to fact that dynamic programming algorithm works on principle of samples and particle lter provides the samples. A comparison of mean squared error(MSE) using the nonlinear programming optimization and dynamic programming optimization is veried for the proposed theory of using dynamic programming algorithm in estimation of cost function.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we develop and analyze a novel framework for moving horizon estimation (MHE) of linear and nonlinear constrained discrete-time systems, which we refer to as proximity moving horizon estimation. The conceptual idea of the proposed framework is to employ a stabilizing a priori solution in order to ensure stability of MHE and to combine it with an online convex optimization in order to obtain an improved performance without jeopardizing stability. The goal of this thesis is to provide proximity-based MHE approaches with desirable theoretical properties and for which reliable and numerically efficient algorithms allow the estimator to be applied in real-time applications. In more detail, we present constructive and simple MHE design procedures which are tailored to the considered class of dynamical systems in order to guarantee important properties of the resulting estimation error dynamics. Furthermore, we develop computationally efficient MHE algorithms in which a suboptimal state estimate is computed at each time instant after an arbitrary and limited number of optimization algorithm iterations. In particular, we introduce a novel class of anytime MHE algorithms which ensure desirable stability and performance properties of the estimator for any number of optimization algorithm iterations, including the case of a single iteration per time instant. In addition to the obtained theoretical results, we discuss the tuning of the performance criteria in proximity MHE given prior knowledge on the system disturbances and illustrate the theoretical properties and practical benefits of the proposed approaches with various numerical examples from the literature.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims at developing model-based control and estimation algorithms via Carleman approximation to improve the performance of nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) and nonlinear moving horizon estimation (NMHE).Despite the many advantages of model predictive control (MPC) and moving horizon estimation (MHE) as advanced control and estimation technologies, computational delay is one of the most significant problems holding back their industrial applications. This dissertation addresses this problem by developing NMPC and NMHE algorithms based on Carleman approximation to improve their computational efficiency. We also integrate other mathematics and optimization tools in our algorithms, including control vector parameterization (CVP) and nonlinear programming (NLP) sensitivity analysis, to further improve their performances.We model the original nonlinear system with a Two-Tier approximation. First, we approximate the system through a Taylor expansion and arrive at a polynomial formulation. Second, we extend the state variables to higher orders following the Kronecker product rule. After that, we approximate the system for a second time through Carleman approximation (also known as Carleman linearization). After this Two-Tier approximation, we draw an extended bilinear expression to represent the nonlinear dynamics.With little loss of nonlinear information, it enables analytical prediction of future system evolution.Assuming piecewise constant control signals, the manipulated inputs are entering the cost function as parameters. Through Carleman approximation, the dynamic models are directly incorporated into the cost function, releasing the optimization from these equality constraints. This also allows the computer to analytically calculate the sensitivity of the cost function to the manipulated inputs. The analytical sensitivity facilitates the solver by serving as the search gradient, and also allows us to develop sensitivity-updating algorithms. All of these together contributes to significantly increased computational efficiency.We present an analysis of error accumulation caused by Carleman approximation and then improve the accuracy of this approach by resetting extended states periodically. The idea of efficient temporal discretization in CVP is embedded in the Carleman model predictive control (CMPC) formulation to improve the controller performance. The advantages are illustrated with two application examples where we solve a tracking problem and a regulation problem.A computationally efficient approach of economic-oriented model predictive control (EMPC) is developed, Carleman EMPC. Carleman approximation works well with set-point free economic cost function. In this way, we predict the future economic performance analytically and provide the sensitivity of the economic performance to the manipulated inputs as the search gradient. Hence, despite the economic stage costs are mostly non-tracking and non-quadratic, we achieve significant acceleration in the computation of EMPC. An oxidation of ethylene example is demonstrated as a case study example. We optimize multiple manipulated inputs and achieve optimal control by establishing a non-tracking cyclic operation.In this dissertation, we also develop an algorithm that fuses Carleman moving horizon estimation (CMHE) and CMPC together, to design an output feedback receding horizon controller. CMHE identifies the system states as the initial condition for CMPC to make optimal control decisions. The control decisions made by CMPC update the dynamic models used in CMHE to make more precise estimations. Modeling the nonlinear system with Carleman approximation, we estimate the system evolution for both CMHE and CMPC analytically. The Gradient vectors and Hessian matrices are then provided to facilitate the optimizations. To further reduce real-time computation, we adapt the advanced-step NMHE and advanced-step NMPC concepts to our CMHE/CMPC pair to develop an asCMHE/asCMPC pair. It pre-estimates the states and pre-designs the manipulated input sequence one step in advance with analytical models, and then it updates the estimation and control decisions almost in the real-time with pre-calculated analytical sensitivities.A nonlinear CSTR is studied as the illustration example. With CMHE/CMPC pair, the computational time is decreased to one order of magnitude less than standard NMHE/NMPC. With asCMHE/asCMPC pair, the real-time estimation and control decisions takes a negligible amount of wall-clock time.
