Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My recently completed novel entitled Laowai for Sale was written in the genre of realistic fiction, first-person omniscient. The plot of the story is the moral, financial, and spiritual bankruptcy of the American people as represented by the storys four main characters in China and the president of the United States in America. While the four main characters in China represent the hope that America can prevail against adversity and reclaim its legacy as the greatest nation on earth, the character of the president represents an America that is willing to mortgage its soul for sensual satisfaction with the risk of losing its identity and position on the world stage. These ideas are conveyed through satire and comedy in the character dialogue. The storys protagonist, John Winston, is an Aspergers syndrome savant with a photographic memory who attained material success through his musical ability and encyclopedic capacity for knowledge on all things regarding American pop music. Unfortunately, he lost everything, as did many others in the economic times that are characteristic of todays US economy. Because of the limited social skills associated with his disability, Winston descends into a downward spiral that resulted in his isolation and drinking. Then he is whisked away to China with three other main characters in a government program to stem the mounting crisis of an unemployment rate that has exceeded 50 percent. This crisis seriously threatens the US presidents chances for a second term in office, so his chief of staff devises a plan, using the CIA, to initiate a massive, wholesale exportation of Americas unemployed labor force to China as English teachers in order to rapidly change the unemployment statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There are two kinds of people in this word; people who take and people who get taken from. I don’t intend to be the latter anymore.” –Law Calloway They say friends make the worst enemies, but what about family? The Calloway family secret was supposed to be taken to the grave. Now that Raquel knows the two feuding families are intertwined in more ways than one, and the man she loves is presumed dead, she has to figure out her next move. Whatever she decides, she has to be careful. After all, she’s carrying around his family’s biggest secret, along with what happened to Nashiya. Will Raquel succumb to the fast and dangerous life of the man she loves as part of her vengeance against Dallas, or, will Derrick, the one skeleton from her past, spill the secret that unravels everything? Everyone thinks that dead men tell no tales, but that is a deadly mistake. Now that the people Law loves and those who hate him the most think he’s out of the picture for good, he can make his moves in silence as he continues to lay out his plan on the path to ultimate respect. He plans to leave no stone unturned when it comes to getting Detective Mason and the Price family off his back for good, because this time around, he’s playing for keeps. In the blink of an eye, Blaze finds himself faced with new responsibilities, and the weight of the world is on his shoulders now that he thinks he’s the only Calloway man left to redeem his family’s name. With a baby on the way and a new relationship blooming with Nevaeh, he has to be more mindful of the moves he makes. Thinking with his mind and not with his gun for the first time may be one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do. Even with Nashiya gone, Dallas still held up his end of their final bargain by giving Law a wedding gift he’d never forget. What he doesn’t know is he may be playing right into Law’s hand. Dallas has his own ulterior motives in this cat and mouse game, and wants proof of the information Raquel revealed to him to save her life. Because now he knows the Price’s and Calloway’s were more than just enemies, they were family. In the finale of this ride or die love story, everyone is seeking their own revenge by any means necessary. As secrets come pouring out like rain, will love conquer all, even when it’s foundation is shaky? For both families, it’s not the beginning of the story that concerns them, it’s not knowing how it will all end.

Book The Chaneysville Incident

Download or read book The Chaneysville Incident written by David Bradley and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the PEN/Faulkner: “Rivals Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon as the best novel about the black experience in America since Ellison’s Invisible Man” (The Christian Science Monitor). Brilliant but troubled historian John Washington has left Philadelphia, where he is employed by a major university, to return to his hometown just north of the Mason–Dixon Line. He is there to care for Old Jack, one of the men who helped raise him when he was growing up on the Hill, an old black neighborhood in the little Pennsylvania town—but he also wants to learn more about the death of his father. What John discovers is that his father, Moses Washington, left behind extensive notes on a mystery he was researching: why thirteen escaped slaves reached freedom in Chaneysville only to die there, for reasons forgotten or never known at all. Based on meticulous historical research, The Chaneysville Incident explores the power of our pasts, and paints a vivid portrait of realities such as the Underground Railroad’s activity in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and the phenomenon of enslaved people committing suicide to escape their fate. This extraordinary novel, a finalist for the National Book Award, was described by the Los Angeles Times as “perhaps the most significant work by a new black male author since James Baldwin dazzled in the early ’60s with his fine fury,” and placed David Bradley in the front ranks of contemporary American authors.

Download or read book It s a London thing written by Caspar Melville and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a record of the Black music culture that emerged in post-colonial London at the end of the twentieth century; the people who made it, the racial and spatial politics of its development and change, and the part it played in founding London’s precious, embattled multiculture. It tells the story of the linked Black musical scenes of the city, from ska, reggae and soul in the 1970s, to rare groove and rave in the 1980s and jungle and its offshoots in the 1990s, to dubstep and grime of the 2000s. Melville argues that these demonstrate enough common features to be thought of as one musical culture, an Afro-diasporic continuum. Core to this idea is that this dance culture has been ignored in history and cultural theory and that it should be thought of as a powerful and internationally significant form of popular art.
