Book A Survey of the Gull and Tern Populations of Lakes Huron Michigan and Superior

Download or read book A Survey of the Gull and Tern Populations of Lakes Huron Michigan and Superior written by James Pinson Ludwig and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960 to 1962 nesting seasons the Ludwig banding team surveyed the gull and tern populations on Lakes Huron, Michigan, and Superior. The purpose of the survey was to determine the location and population of each colony, to observe any annual fluctuations or population movements between islands, and to band as many birds as possible for future studies of their movements. Four species were included in the survey: Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus), Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis), Common Terns (Sterna hirundo), and Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia). Black Terns (Chliodonias niger) nested within the area of the survey but were not included because of the difficulty of finding their nests. The approximate are covered by the survey extended from the Detroit River through Lake Huron to Sault Ste Marie, except for the southern portion of Georgian Bay; westward through the Straits of Mackinac to the Beaver Islands and Green Bay in Lake Michigan; and scattered colonies along the southern shore of Lake Superior.

Book Ornithology in Laboratory and Field

Download or read book Ornithology in Laboratory and Field written by Olin Sewall Pettingill and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ornithology in Laboratory and Field is intended as an aid to ornithological study at the college or university level. Students who lack the background knowledge usually acquired during a course in general zoology or biology should keep it handy for ready reference a standard elementary text on the subject. This book contains extensive material for purely informational reading, possibly enough to supplant the need of an additional textbook. Its principal purpose still complies with the title of its predecessors for it is essentially a manual to guide and assist the student in direct observations. All twenty sections, except the last (""The Origin, Evolution, and Decrease of Birds""), suggest methods and provide instructions for studies; and all conclude with an extensive list of references, frequently annotated, for further information. The twenty sections of the book can be taken up in almost any order and some may be omitted without affecting the instructional value of the others. A feature of this new edition is an introduction to birds and ornithology, intended for reading at the beginning of a course. The purpose is twofold: to show the significance of birds for study and to give an overall preview of ornithology, the subject, with emphasis on its wide scope, how it is studied, and some of the continuing and exciting opportunities that it offers for investigation.

Book Birds of Ontario Habitat Requirements Limiting Factors and Status

Download or read book Birds of Ontario Habitat Requirements Limiting Factors and Status written by Al Sandilands and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volumes in the Birds of Ontario series summarize life history requirements of bird species that are normally part of the ecology of Ontario. This is the second volume in the series and completes the treatment of the nonpasserine bird species occurring in Ontario on a regular basis. Information on habitat, limiting factors, and status is summarized for 83 species in this volume. These topics are covered for the three primary avian seasons: breeding, migration, and winter. Habitat, nest sites, territoriality, site fidelity, annual reproductive effort, habitat loss and degradation, environmental contaminants, and a variety of other topics are covered in the species accounts. Maps depicting breeding and wintering range are presented for most species along with drawings by Ross James. Birds of Ontario is an essential reference source for wildlife biologists, environmental consultants, and planners preparing or reviewing environmental impact statements and environmental assessments. Serious birders will find the volumes of interest as well. Although the books focus on Ontario birds, the information is highly relevant to adjacent provinces and states.

Book Arkansas Birds Thier Distribution and Abundance c

Download or read book Arkansas Birds Thier Distribution and Abundance c written by and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arkansas Birds fills a space too long empty on the shelves of ornithologists and students alike, of naturalists, wildlife and conservation groups, bird and garden club enthusiasts, artists, and those dedicated people who may be all of these. The authors have drawn upon a wide range of sources, from prehistoric Indian sites to present-day field observation, to cover ever species of wild bird recorded in Arkansas. Accounts of such extinct species as the Carolina Parakeet keep us from taking for granted even the Northern Bobwhite and other common modern species. Early chapters introduce the reader to the habitats favored by various species; full descriptions are accompanied by line drawings and color photos. Arkansas Birds serves both as a quick reference and a general historical review. A discussion of the Bald Eagle traces its history from bones found in Indian burials, through Audubon's early observations, to modern population declines and successful observation efforts. This attractive and accessible volume is a guide long-awaited by both the professional student of birds and the amateur with a backyard feeder.--Jacket.
