Book Social Movement Studies in Europe

Download or read book Social Movement Studies in Europe written by Olivier Fillieule and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together over forty established and emerging scholars, this landmark volume is the first to comprehensively examine the evolution and current practice of social movement studies in a specifically European context. While its first half offers comparative approaches to an array of significant issues and movements, its second half assembles focused national studies that include most major European states. Throughout, these contributions are guided by a shared set of historical and social-scientific questions with a particular emphasis on political sociology, thus offering a bold and uncommonly unified survey that will be essential for scholars and students of European social movements.

Book Social Movements and the Change of Economic Elites in Europe after 1945

Download or read book Social Movements and the Change of Economic Elites in Europe after 1945 written by Stefan Berger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the changing nature of social movements and economic elites in post-Second World War Europe. In the years following 1945, Europe faced diverse challenges connected by the overriding question of how the reconstruction of the continent should proceed. For the Central Powers, the implementation lay in the hands of the Allied occupying forces who organised the process of denazification and the establishment of a new economic order. In countries without military occupation, there was a deep gap between the new governmental forces and the former collaborators. In both cases, social movements which were formed by anti-fascists on the left of the political spectrum assumed the task of social reorganisation. The chapters in this book explore the discourses about economic systems and their elites which moved to the fore across a range of European countries, uncovering who was involved, what resistance these social movements faced and how these ultimately failed in the West to bring about change, while in Eastern Europe Stalinism forcibly imposed change.

Book A European Youth Revolt

Download or read book A European Youth Revolt written by Bart van der Steen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early 1980s, large parts of Europe were swept with riots and youth revolts. Radicalised young people occupied buildings and clashed with the police in cities such as Zurich, Berlin and Amsterdam, while in Great Britain and France, 'migrant' youths protested fiercely against their underprivileged position and police brutality. Was there a link between the youth revolts in different European cities, and if so, how were they connected and how did they influence each other? These questions are central in this volume. This book covers case studies from countries in both Eastern and Western Europe and focuses not only on political movements such as squatting, but also on political subcultures such as punk, as well as the interaction between them. In doing so, it is the first historical collection with a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective on youth, youth revolts and social movements in the 1980s.

Book Movements in European History

Download or read book Movements in European History written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated novelist and poet presents a vivid history of Europe from Ancient Rome to the early 20thcentury in this restored, authoritative edition. Though D. H. Lawrence was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, his works were severely corrupted by the stringent house-styling of printers and the intrusive editing of timid publishers. A team of scholars at Cambridge University Press has worked for more than thirty years to restore the definitive texts of D. H. Lawrence in The Cambridge Editions. In 1918, a publisher at Oxford University Press approached D.H. Lawrence with the proposition of writing a textbook on European history. A great lover of history, Lawrence presents a lively narrative of European civilizations from the fall of Ancient Rome to the unification of Germany in the early twentieth century. This edition restores Lawrence’s original text, which had been censored before publication. It also identifies and analyzes Lawrence’s methods of using the sourcebooks on which his writing was based.
