Book Habitat Selection and Movements of Diploid and Triploid Grass Carp in a Large Reservoir

Download or read book Habitat Selection and Movements of Diploid and Triploid Grass Carp in a Large Reservoir written by Tyler M. Hessler and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grass Carp, an herbivorous fish introduced in North America to control aquatic vegetation, has become an increasing ecological threat to aquatic ecosystems they invade. Grass Carp have the potential to cause declines and alterations in aquatic vegetation communities, which in turn can have negative impacts on native species reliant on aquatic vegetation. In the last ten years, frequent captures and observed spawning of wild fish have increased concerns of Grass Carp establishment in novel waterways. A particular concern is the potential establishment of fish in Lake Erie and its tributaries. Understanding Grass Carp habitat selection might be useful in population control by guiding harvest actions. In addition, understanding movement ecology of Grass Carp might help to predict where Grass Carp go and what cues initiate those movements. Identifying predictable movement behaviors to heavily used sites might also be useful in control efforts. In this study, I tracked Grass Carp to evaluate winter habitat selection and to determine whether using tagged (Judas) fish is effective in removing wild fish during winter. In addition, this study aimed to characterize upstream migrations into lake tributaries and determine if diploid and triploid fish exhibit similar behaviors. From 2017-2019, I tracked 86 Grass Carp tagged with acoustic transmitters in Truman Reservoir, Missouri to answer these questions. I employed Bayesian discrete choice models to determine winter habitat selection of tagged fish. Generalized linear mixed models were used to determine environmental conditions associated with upstream migrations. Tagged Grass Carp showed strong selection for shallow littoral habitats, and 75% of locations were in waters [less than or equal to] 3 m deep. Attempts to capture fish with trammel nets using the Judas method proved difficult with only 1.9 fish caught/netting attempt versus 1.2 caught/netting attempt when selecting areas with suitable Grass Carp habitat for harvest.

Book Characterization of Triploid Grass Carp Stockings in Private Waters of Texas

Download or read book Characterization of Triploid Grass Carp Stockings in Private Waters of Texas written by Robert P. McCartney and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grass Carp Ctenopharyngodon idella is used worldwide as a biological control of nuisance aquatic vegetation. Use of triploid Grass Carp in Texas was legalized for stocking on private lands in 1992. Since 1992, landowners seeking to stock triploid Grass Carp must complete a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) permit application, which requires the number of Grass Carp requested, estimated surface area, percent vegetation coverage, and other information on the location and characteristics of the receiving water body. Once applications are received by TPWD, specifics of the application are entered into a database before being approved or denied by TPWD personnel. Purpose of this study was to summarize and characterize the number of permits, number of triploid Grass Carp requested, receiving water body characteristics, and estimated costs in stocking triploid Grass Carp between 1992 and 2020. A total of 30,387 permit applications were submitted, requesting 818,667 triploid Grass Carp of which 793,020 were approved by TPWD. Mean number (± 1 SD) of permit applications per year was 1,048 (± 166), and mean number of triploid Grass Carp requested per year was 28,229 (± 7,881). Trends in permit applications and number of triploid Grass Carp requested were similar between 1992 and 2020. Greater number of requests were for first time, introductory stockings than repeat, supplemental stockings and were from east Texas ecoregions than in central and west Texas ecoregions. Majority of the receiving water bodies were 2.0 ha with 50% submergent vegetative coverage. About 4% of the applications were denied. Estimated cost of stocking ranged between $200 and $400 per ha. Results of this study inform landowners on the practice of triploid Grass Carp as a biological control of nuisance aquatic vegetation but also highlights gaps in information, such as efficacy in controlling aquatic vegetation and the number of triploid Grass Carp stocked, that could benefit TPWD and other natural resource agencies that continue to regulate the stocking of triploid Grass Carp.

Book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species

Download or read book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

Book Tilapias Biology and Exploitation

Download or read book Tilapias Biology and Exploitation written by M.C.M Beveridge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Referred to in the Bible, pictured on the wall-friezes of ancient Egyptian tombs, and a subject of fascination for generations of scientists, the tilapias (Cichlidae: Tilapiini) have featured in the diet and culture of humankind for thousands of years. The present century has seen their spread from Africa throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, largely for food and fisheries purposes. This book attempts to pull together our knowledge of this important group - their biology and fisheries and aquaculture - in a single volume, something that has not been done comprehensively for nearly two decades. A succession of chapters by acknowledged authorities covers evolution, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography, reproductive biology, mating systems and parental care, diet, feeding and digestive physiology, environmental physiology and energetics, the role of tilapias in ecosystems, population dynamics and management, genetics, seed production, nutrition, farming, economics and marketing. The book is aimed at biologists, fisheries scientists, aquaculturists, and all interested in aquatic ecology.

Book Useful Plants of Neotropical Origin

Download or read book Useful Plants of Neotropical Origin written by Heinz Brücher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with useful plants of neotropical origin, i.e., plants which have been cultivated in Southern and Central America as well as their wild relatives. Quite a number of these trees and bushes have "conquerred" the world as early as 400 years ago and are nowadays of utmost importance for feeding the increasing world population (e.g., potatoes). It has been estimated that about 150 such useful plants stem from the "New World." This book does not only describe the current theories about their domestication, cultivation, and evolution; it also discusses biotechnological methods for improving their productivity. About the German edition: ..". One of the most interesting and recurring themes of this book concerns some little-known species of potential value which may well become important to a future which is certain to present us with serious problems, at least as far as alimentation is considered. BrA1/4cher's book is absolutely up to date in the taxonomic and nomenclatural sense..." "Excerpta Botanica"#1

Book Vetiver Grass

Download or read book Vetiver Grass written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For developing nations, soil erosion is among the most chronic environmental and economic burdens. Vast amounts of topsoil are washed or blown away from arable land only to accumulate in rivers, reservoirs, harbors, and estuaries, thereby creating a double disaster: a vital resource disappears from where it is desperately needed and is deposited where it is equally unwanted. Despite much rhetoric and effort, little has been done to overcome this problem. Vetiver, a little-known tropical grass, offers one practical and inexpensive way to control erosion on a huge scale in both humid and semi-arid regions. Hedges of this deeply rooted species catch and hold back sediments while the stiff foliage acts as a filter that also slows runoff and keeps moisture on site. This book assesses vetiver's promise and limitations and identifies places where this grass can be deployed without undue environmental risk.
