Book Trouble in Mouseland

Download or read book Trouble in Mouseland written by G.Gavin Williams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cloud of gloom hung over Mouseland like a blanket. All was not well. The recent cheese shortage grew worse every day. Nothing and no one could explain why this was happening. Tartaf, the Cheese Chancellor could give no reasonable account. Frustrated by these events, the Mouse Council called an emergency meeting in the capital city of Mouseopolis. Every expert, cheeseologists, cheese historians, and cheese makers were assembled to get to the root of the problem. Failing to find a solution, they decided to appoint a hero to investigate the matter. After a careful search, they made an unlikely selection. Mostly Mouse had accomplished absolutely nothing. He was well known in party circles for having a good time. He had no interest in Mouseland’s problems. However, in this society, there were rules, and he was no exception. Mouse Law clearly stated he could not refuse. A major factor in his selection was the fact that he was a direct descendant of Mouse the First, the founder of Mouseland

Book Populism and Populist Discourse in North America

Download or read book Populism and Populist Discourse in North America written by Marcia Macaulay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the origins of populism in Canada and the United States and its development into a powerful and at times disturbing political force. Focus is on five historical periods: The Populist Party of the United States in the 1890s, Prairie Populism in Canada during the early and mid-20th century, the Reform Party of Canada in the 1980s and 90s, the ‘left’ and ‘right’ populism of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump in the early 21st century, and the phenomenon of Ford Nation in modern day Ontario, Canada. The author extends Ernesto Laclau’s analysis of populism as a ‘logic’ in On Populist Reason (2005) to explore how a ‘people’ come into being in their conflict or clash with an ‘elite,’ defined by Chartists in the 19th century as “idlers,” providing a contrast between ‘producers’ and ‘non-producers.’ The author examines the linguistic media (speeches, books, radio, twitter, Facebook) used in populist discourse to convey a political message and to articulate the needs, wishes and will of a newly born ‘people’ in their numerous guises and expressions, from “the plain people,” to “the little guy,” or to “brothers and sisters.” This volume will be of interest to researchers in an interdisciplinary range of fields, including discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, pragmatics, rhetoric and stylistics, political communication, social movements theory, media studies, and Canadian and American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th installment of the bestselling Joanne Kilbourn series from the "queen of Canadian crime fiction" (Winnipeg Free Press). When, at the age of sixty, Joanne learns that Douglas Ellard, the reserved general practitioner whom she had grown up believing to be her father was, in fact, the best friend of her biological father, the brilliant visual artist Desmond Love, she begins to question not just who she is but what factors play a role in shaping all of us and in making us who we really are. Joanne is offered the chance to revisit her family history, when writer Roy Brodnitz, author of The Happiest Girl, a Broadway mega-hit inspired by a Desmond Love painting, approaches her with the idea of making a mini-series about the close relationship between the Ellard and Love families. Brodnitz is in town working on the film adaptation of his Broadway hit, and he and his film company soon become a significant presence in the life of Joanne's family, with results that are both life-changing and menacing. When Joanne and Zack's eighteen-year-old daughter, Taylor Shreve, develops a close friendship with the seventeen-year-old actress starring in the movie, the Shreve family is exposed to the dark side of the film industry and they uncover disturbing truths about the handsome and talented people they have invited into their lives. A Darkness of the Heart explores the ways in which clear vision, generosity of spirit, and a willingness to love can combat the forces in our world that seek to encroach upon innocence. Once again, Gail Bowen's powerful storytelling, engaging characters, and page-turning plot reaffirm her place as one of the finest mystery writers around.

Download or read book Great Canadian Speeches written by Dennis Gruending and published by Markham, Ont. : Fitzhenry & Whiteside. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of the most powerful and moving oratory that Canada has to offer. Throughout history, men and women of great eloquence have persuaded their contemporaries to build nations, to make war and create peace, to sway judges and juries, to celebrate the accomplishments of the living, and to mourn for the dead. Canada has had more than its share of great orators, individuals who have used their rhetorical powers to explore important issues faced by our nation: Confederation, relations between peoples, human rights, the economy, culture, our international relationships, particularly with the United States, but also our role in the larger and developing world. Great Canadian Speeches is a thought-provoking collection of the finest speeches in Canadian history, among them: Sir John A. MacDonald making a case for Confederation, while silver-tongued Joseph Howe argues against it; Louis Riel pleading his case to a Regina jury in 1885; Nellie McClung demanding the vote for women; Dr. Norman Bethune urging Canadians to support the Republican cause in Spain; Pierre Trudeau and Rene Levesque facing off in the 1980 Quebec referendum; Thomas Homer-Dixon pondering Canada's future in an increasingly unstable world. Great Canadian Speeches is an eminently readable, thought-provoking oratory for anyone who treasures our country's history and literature.
