Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, the Texas Rangers and Canada?s North-West Mounted Police were formed to bring the resource-rich hinterlands at either end of the Great Plains under governmental control. Native and rural peoples often found themselves squarely in the path of this westward expansion and the law enforcement agents that led the way. Though separated by nearly two thousand miles, the Rangers and Mounties performed nearly identical functions, including subjugating Indigenous groups; dispossessing peoples of mixed ancestry; defending the property of big cattlemen; and policing industrial disputes. Yet the means by which the two forces achieved these ends sharply diverged;øwhile the Rangers often relied on violence, the Mounties usually exercised restraint, a fact that highlights some of the fundamental differences between the U.S. and Canadian Wests. Policing the Great Plains presents the first comparative history of the two most famous constabularies in the world.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays presents a variety of scholarly explorations of the nature and role of the Mounties in the Prairie Provinces from the formation of the North West Mounted Police in 1873-74 to its transformation into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1919-20. The essays are grouped into five broad themes: relations with First Nations; law enforcement; social issues, including relations with minority groups and labour movements; characteristics of the police force; and crisis and change (police-immigrant relations, response to labour unrest, and the origins of domestic intelligence and counter-subversion). An epilogue presents the case for the dramatic change of the force after 1919-20 and the new force's use of the positive image created by the old force.

Book Whose National Security

Download or read book Whose National Security written by Gary Kinsman and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you believe that RCMP operatives used to spy on Tupperware parties? In the 1950s and ’60s they did. They also monitored high school students, gays and lesbians, trade unionists, left-wing political groups, feminists, consumer’s associations, Black activists, First Nations people, and Quebec sovereigntists. The establishment of a tenacious Canadian security state came as no accident. On the contrary, the highest levels of government and the police, along with non-governmental interests and institutions, were involved in a concerted campaign. The security state grouped ordinary Canadians into dozens of political stereotypes and labelled them as threats. Whose National Security? probes the security state’s ideologies and hidden agendas, and sheds light on threats to democracy that persist to the present day. The contributors’ varied approaches open up avenues for reconceptualizing the nature of spying.

Book excerpt: This exhilarating Western story describes how Blue Pete-"the most popular cowboy character in fiction"-bested Frenchy Thoreau, a cattle-thief and worse, with oddly chivalrous ideas but a killer as quick-witted as swift on the draw. On the prairies and mountain trails of the Canadian-U.S. border, rife with rustlers' feuds and treacherous bands of outlawed Indians, Blue Pete relentlessly stalked his dangerous quarry. At bay, Thoreau turned and struck with deadly precision, and Blue Pete, out manoeuvred and out-gunned, was jammed in the tightest corner of his rip-roaring career.

Book excerpt: Middleware is everywhere. Ever since the advent of sockets and other virtu- circuit abstractions, researchers have been looking for ways to incorporate high- value concepts into distributed systems platforms. Most distributed applications, especially Internet applications, are now programmed using such middleware platforms. Prior to 1998, there were several major conferences and workshops at which research into middleware was reported, including ICODP (International C- ference on Open Distributed Processing), ICDP (International Conference on Distributed Platforms) and SDNE (Services in Distributed and Networked - vironments). Middleware’98was a synthesis of these three conferences. Middleware 2000 continued the excellent tradition of Middleware’98. It p- vided a single venue for reporting state-of-the-art results in the provision of distributed systems platforms. The focus of Middleware 2000 was the design, implementation, deployment, and evaluation of distributed systems platforms and architectures for future networked environments. Among the 70 initial submissions to Middleware 2000, 21 papers were - lected for inclusion in the technical program of the conference. Every paper was reviewed by four members of the program committee. The papers were judged - cording to their originality, presentation quality, and relevance to the conference topics. The accepted papers cover various subjects such as caching, re?ection, quality of service, and transactions.

Book Bethlen Home

Download or read book Bethlen Home written by Ron Cosentino and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bethlen Home By: Ron Cosentino In his memoir, Bethlen Home, Cosentino recalls the abrupt shift in his childhood that would alter the course of his life forever. The day after Christmas, as Cosentino and his brother and sister were still enthralled with their new toys and gifts, his mother left, giving the implication that she was going out on a date. In reality, she was seeking out an abortion in secret. In the early morning hours of December 27th, 1958, Cosentino's mother dies alone in the hospital from blood loss due to severe complications with her abortion. With the death of his mother rocking the family to its core, the three children are sent to the Bethlen Home, an orphanage run by the United Hungarian Reform Federation Church of America, and the place the kids would call home for nearly the rest of their childhoods. Still trying to process his grief, Cosentino writes about his complicated and transformative time at the Bethlen Home and how it ultimately made him who he is today.
