Book excerpt: Over the course of fifty years, distinguished Staff Sergeant (retired) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Alert Henry (Al) Lund amassed the largest ever collection of Mountie books, magazines, and comics. From a collection of thousands, he selected approximately one hundred of his favourites for the exhibition and catalogue. In the books, magazines, and comics, the artists and illustrators have captured the image of the Mountie in a variety of styles and have often depicted him as a Canadian hero and world icon. Lund's collection was donated to the University of Alberta Libraries and will be on display at Bruce Peel Special Collections in 2017 (bpsc.library.ualberta.ca).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, the Texas Rangers and Canada?s North-West Mounted Police were formed to bring the resource-rich hinterlands at either end of the Great Plains under governmental control. Native and rural peoples often found themselves squarely in the path of this westward expansion and the law enforcement agents that led the way. Though separated by nearly two thousand miles, the Rangers and Mounties performed nearly identical functions, including subjugating Indigenous groups; dispossessing peoples of mixed ancestry; defending the property of big cattlemen; and policing industrial disputes. Yet the means by which the two forces achieved these ends sharply diverged;øwhile the Rangers often relied on violence, the Mounties usually exercised restraint, a fact that highlights some of the fundamental differences between the U.S. and Canadian Wests. Policing the Great Plains presents the first comparative history of the two most famous constabularies in the world.

Book excerpt: Historian Michael Dawson digs deep into the written and pictorial record to reveal how the RCMP, since its inception, has constructed and zealously guarded its public image. Drawing on previously untapped sources, Dawson documents how consultants and entrepreneurs deliberately transformed and modernized the traditional symbolism of the Mountie. His trenchant analysis extends to the ironies of the recent licensing of the hallowed Mountie image to the ultimate dream-merchants—Disney.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great Depression of the 1930s was a golden age for advertising, as corporate America sought to retain its customer base in the wake of the Crash of '29. For a struggling paper manufacturer in Cloquet, Minnesota, the times were all the more difficult because it had recently invested in costly new machinery. In desperation, the executives of Northwest Paper called in an ad agent from Chicago to boost sales and save the company. Together, they created an ad campaign that would be one of the longest-running and best-known in American commercial history. The name of the firm and its location in the north woods of Minnesota provided the inspiration for a series of story-ads featuring the adventures of the North West Mounted Police of Canada." "The sixteen artists who worked on the Mountie series between 1931 and 1970 were among the most famous commercial illustrators of their day. The first of these was Hal Foster, who later created the Prince Valiant comic strip. Another, the most prolific "Mountie" artist, was Arnold Friberg, who stayed with the project for thirty-three years. Friberg's Mounted Police pictures are much sought-after by collectors and are still in circulation in the form of calendars, pamphlets, and other printed materials."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: “First rate, compelling, nerve-tingling. A novel of sex, death, and the macabre. Extraordinarily vivid. A thinking man’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” —The Vancouver Sun The first in a series of crime thrillers featuring the Special X team of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police—world-weary cops hardened enough to deal with the most heinous of crimes. A serial killer is loose on the streets of Vancouver. A sadist preying on women, leaving a trail of decapitated corpses—and a totem pole displaying the grisly head of his latest victim. If this killer is hoping to rile former Royal Mountie Robert DeClercq, he certainly made his mark. Lured out of retirement, DeClercq tirelessly tracks the psychopath across two continents. But as DeClercq gets closer to understanding complex motivations of a criminally insane killer, he’s more certain than ever he’s about to confront the ultimate evil. A revised and expanded version of the original Headhunter, which was first published in 1984. “Michael Slade’s books are blood-chilling, spine-tingling, gut-wrenching, stomach-churning, and a much closer look at the inside of a maniac’s brain than most people would find comfortable—but always riveting.” —Diana Gabaldon, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of the Outlander series “A real chiller! The most gruesome I have ever read.” —Robert Bloch, author of Psycho “A novel so terrifying it will haunt your dreams for weeks.” —Book of the Month Club Magazine “Headhunter stunned me! It’s really good!” —Alice Cooper “Crime writer Michael Slade is the real deal! As a trial lawyer, Slade knows psycho killers, sex predators, and their horrific crimes inside out.” —RCMP Staff Sergeant Christine Wozney (ret.), CO of the Violent Crime Linkage Analysis team (West Coast) “[The 1984 edition of] Headhunter enthralled me with its hardboiled realism and noir horror. Now, a third of a century later, the reimagined story is no less exciting or frightening. The dark shadows in a Michael Slade novel make you want to keep your back against the alley wall.” —Det. Insp. Kim Rossmo (VPD ret.)

Book The Red Wall

Download or read book The Red Wall written by Jane Hall and published by GeneralStore PublishingHouse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1977, people have asked Jane Hall over and over what it was like to have been among the first few female members in the RCMP, and, like so many of her peers, she has avoided answering the question. How could one sentence do the question justice? Finally, after years of thoughtful contemplation, she has borrowed a phrase from the father of one of the original members of the North West Mounted Police--Sub-Inspector Francis Dickens : "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." But the reason for avoiding the answer, like the question itself, was a little more complex than simply not having the correct words. To truly tell the complete story, some of the bad as well as the good must be told; and that was why senior female members like Ms. Hall had chosen to remain silent, fearing that any abbreviated response could be misinterpreted or subverted to unfairly attack the RCMP. After all, it was the RCMP who broke new social and professional ground when it decided : "In the absence of any empirical evidence to the contrary, the assumption had to be that females would be capable of performing all the diversified duties in the Force equal to the males." The RCMP, the embodiment of the Canadian national identity, levelled the professional playing field for women, and by doing so, in this unprecedented leadership role the RCMP catapulted the women's movement forward, impacting the lives of women throughout North America--and quite possibly the world. Says Jane Hall : "It is time to break the silence; time to acknowledge our successes and our failures. Time to move forward."

Book Night We Stole the Mounties Car

Download or read book Night We Stole the Mounties Car written by Max Braithwaite and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Braithwaite has the unique capacity to be both tender and caustic – both nostalgic and uncompromisingly honest. He is also one of Canada’s few original humorists. All these qualities are present in his latest bittersweet recollections of life on the Prairies during the early Thirties. It was a time of depression and drought; but for Max, a young schoolteacher, it was also a time for courtship and marriage, for those hilarious episodes in Wannego, Saskatchewan, which did much to belie the grimness of the era. There was Max’s disastrous umpiring of a Ladies’ Softball game; his writing and directing of a play that generated more drama off-stage than on; the awful problem of the wasps at the outhouse, and much, much, more. The Night We Stole the Mountie’s Car follows Never Sleep Three in a Bed and Why Shoot the Teacher? and completes the story of Max’s early years. It is also Braithwaite at his vintage best – lusty, thought-provoking, and consistently amusing.
