Book Birds of the Yukon Territory

Download or read book Birds of the Yukon Territory written by Pamela H. Sinclair and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yukon is a land of remarkable wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and profound beauty. It is also home to a unique assemblage of birds. As of 2002, 288 bird species have been documented in the Yukon, with 223 occurring regularly. They occupy an amazing range of habitats, from the most barren mountain peaks to lush valley bottom forests, and are an integral part of the cultural heritage of Yukon First Nations people. The vast areas of natural habitat with limited road access can make the study of birds challenging, but are key in defining the nature of birding in the Yukon. Birds of the Yukon Territory is the result of a decade-long project initiated to gather and share what is known about the Yukon's birdlife. Lavishly illustrated with 600 colour photographs and 223 hand-drawn bird illustrations, the book presents a wealth of information on bird distribution, migration and breeding chronology, nesting behaviour, and habitat use, and on conservation concerns. Two hundred and eighty-eight species of birds are documented, including 223 regular species, and 65 casual and accidental species. In compiling this meticulously researched volume, the authors consulted over 166,000 records in a database created by the Canadian Wildlife Service, with information dating back to 1861. S ections on birds in Aboriginal culture and history, and bird names in the Yukon First Nations and Inuvialuit languages, enhance the book, as do the numerous easily interpreted charts and graphs. Destined to become a basic reference work on the avifauna of the North, Birds of the Yukon Territory is a must-have for bird enthusiasts and anyone interested in the natural history of the Yukon and the North.

Download or read book Alaska written by Walter R. Borneman and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 1069 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Alaska is filled with stories of new land and new riches -- and ever present are new people with competing views over how the valuable resources should be used: Russians exploiting a fur empire; explorers checking rival advances; prospectors stampeding to the clarion call of "Gold!"; soldiers battling out a decisive chapter in world war; oil wildcatters looking for a different kind of mineral wealth; and always at the core of these disputes is the question of how the land is to be used and by whom. While some want Alaska to remain static, others are in the vanguard of change. Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land shows that there are no easy answers on either side and that Alaska will always be crossing the next frontier.

Book The Gyrfalcon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Evgeni? Potapov
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2005-01-01
  • ISBN : 0300107781
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Gyrfalcon written by Evgeni? Potapov and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the definitive guide to the largest and most charismatic species of falcon in the world, the Gyrfalcon. With detailed information on life history characteristics, ecology, conservation issues, and much more, the book presents the most accurate, up-to-date, and complete view of this spectacular bird ever published. Drawing on extensive research and travel to every country within the range of the Gyrfalcon, Eugene Potapov and Richard Sale delineate a new map of the bird’s range, conclude that the Gyrfalcon is more adaptable than previously thought, and restore the traditional Linnean scientific name of the species, Falco gyrfalco. The authors also reveal that Gyrfalcons, for much of their lives, are true stenophagous raptors, a rarity not only among raptors but among all birds. Elegantly illustrated with many photographs and line drawings, this is an essential volume for ornithologists, ecologists, wildlife rehabilitators, falconers, and all others fascinated by birds of prey.

Book High Snowfields of the St Elias Mountains Yukon Territory Canada

Download or read book High Snowfields of the St Elias Mountains Yukon Territory Canada written by Edward Grew and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations made during the 1964 summer provide a description of snow and radiation characteristics for the region and give insight into effects of altitude, regarded as a gross variable, when anomalous wind and slope effects are excluded. Divide Camp, Seward Camp, and Lucania Camp were occupied successively within a minimum period of time to compare conditions at different altitudes. Data are presented on snow profiles, snow accumulation measurements, the development of the annual snow layer, snow conditions at depth, the mechanical properties of the snow, snow densification, solar radiation, and the variation of snow properties with surface altitude. It is concluded that as long as local anomalies are avoided, the effects of surface altitude on snow properties and surface processes seem to be simple. However, in mountain regions it is probably a combination of local conditions which produces the most remarkable effects. (Author).
