Book Wilderness Trails of Tennessee s Cherokee National Forest

Download or read book Wilderness Trails of Tennessee s Cherokee National Forest written by William H. Skelton and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive hiking guide to the Cherokee National Forest. Comprised of 625,565 acres along the Tennessee-North Carolina state line, this forest includes much of the western slopes of the southern Appalachian Mountains, north and south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The area encompasses a tremendous diversity of wildlife, vegetation, and scenic vistas of high mountain peaks and beautiful creeks, waterfalls, and valleys. Over one hundred trails and footpaths wind throughout this wildlife haven, inviting everyone who loves the outdoors - hikers, backpackers, hunters, anglers, horseback riders - to explore its natural beauty. The Harvey Broome Group of the Sierra Club's Tennessee Chapter has carefully charted these trails, providing specific directions along with a wealth of general information on the forest's present and past wildlife, vegetation, and geology, as well as a history of the forest's human inhabitants - including the political battles that have been waged to protect the forest. Wilderness Trails of Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest is the first book in the Outdoor Tennessee Series, introducing nature lovers everywhere to the variety of experiences the Volunteer State has to offer those who cherish the great outdoors.

Book Two Worlds in the Tennessee Mountains

Download or read book Two Worlds in the Tennessee Mountains written by David C. Hsiung and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans know Appalachia through stereotyped images: moonshine and handicrafts, poverty and illiteracy, rugged terrain and isolated mountaineers. Historian David Hsiung maintains that in order to understand the origins of such stereotypes, we must look critically at their underlying concepts, especially those of isolation and community. Hsiung focuses on the mountainous area of upper East Tennessee, tracing this area's development from the first settlementin the eighteenth century to the eve of the Civil War. Through his examination, he identifies the different ways in which the region's inhabitants were connected to or separated from other peoples and places. Using an interdisciplinary framework, he analyzes geographical and sociocultural isolation from a number of perspectives, including transportation networks, changing economy, population movement, and topography. This provocative work will stimulate future studies of early Appalachia and serve as a model for the analysis of regional cultures.

Download or read book Our Restless Earth written by Edward T. Luther and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memphis is built on land once the bottom of a sea, Nashville rests within a 600-foot-depth basin eroded from a mighty arch, Knoxville and Chattanooga nestle on lands that have migrates - Knoxville's underpinning traveling all the way from the middle of Sevier County. Our Restless Earth is written for all Tennesseans who are curios about the origins of familiar landscapes. Edward T. Luther describes a state that has attracted specialists from all over the world to study its fascinating geology, a state that in its long east-west axis encompasses nine distinct geologic regions. Appearing here are phenomena such as the New Madrid earthquake that formed Reelfoot lake, the state's almost forgotten gold rush, 60-foot reptiles that once inhabited parts of McNairy County, and the contrary Tennessee River that could not decide which way to flow. The origins of the state's oil, coal, iron, marble, and famous cave country - these too are a part of Our Restless Earth. Edward T. Luther is a native Tennessean whose professional career as a geologist and personal interest in writing have pointed him toward the preparation of this book. Since receiving his advanced degree in geology from Vanderbilt University in 1951, he has come to know that state intimately - first as a team member of the Tennessee Geological Survey and more recently as supervisor of the Survey's research program. He is also an avid reader of fiction and has long been interested in applying writing skills to his technical knowledge in order to make the fascinating science of the earth available to a wider audience.
