  • Author : Ellen Hagan
  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press

Download or read book Blooming Fiascoes written by Ellen Hagan and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blooming Fiascoes is a collective of verse that deconstructs identity. We are beautiful and monstrous. We live in a beautiful and monstrous world. Ellen Hagan poetically mirrors these metaphoric adversaries, drawing on her experiences as a woman, an artist, a mother, a transplanted southerner, and above all, a human being. She plumbs origins in history, body, and living to question how we reckon our whole selves in the catacombs of a world gone mad: We mourn, we bless, / we blow, we wail, we / wind—down, we sip, / we spin, we blind, we / bend, bow & hem. We / hip, we blend, we bind, / we shake, we shine, / shine. We lips & we / teeth, we praise & protest. In these poems, Assyrian, Italian, and Irish lines seep deeper into a body that is growing older but remains engaged with unruly encounters: the experience of raising daughters, sexual freedom, and squaring body image against the body’s prohibitions. This is a work where the legacy is still evolving and always asking questions in real time. Blooming Fiascos spindles poetry that is not afraid to see itself and the lives it inhabits.

Book Mobility without Mayhem

Download or read book Mobility without Mayhem written by Jeremy Packer and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Americans prize the ability to get behind the wheel and hit the open road, they have not always agreed on what constitutes safe, decorous driving or who is capable of it. Mobility without Mayhem is a lively cultural history of America’s fear of and fascination with driving, from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Jeremy Packer analyzes how driving has been understood by experts, imagined by citizens, regulated by traffic laws, governed through education and propaganda, and represented in films, television, magazines, and newspapers. Whether considering motorcycles as symbols of rebellion and angst, or the role of CB radio in regulating driving and in truckers’ evasions of those regulations, Packer shows that ideas about safe versus risky driving often have had less to do with real dangers than with drivers’ identities. Packer focuses on cultural figures that have been singled out as particularly dangerous. Women drivers, hot-rodders, bikers, hitchhikers, truckers, those who “drive while black,” and road ragers have all been targets of fear. As Packer debunks claims about the dangers posed by each figure, he exposes biases against marginalized populations, anxieties about social change, and commercial and political desires to profit by fomenting fear. Certain populations have been labeled as dangerous or deviant, he argues, to legitimize monitoring and regulation and, ultimately, to curtail access to automotive mobility. Packer reveals how the boundary between personal freedom and social constraint is continually renegotiated in discussions about safe, proper driving.

Book excerpt: Man Overboard tells the inside story of one of America's most notorious murder cases in decades, providing unprecedented insight into the death of Greenwich native George Allen Smith IV on his honeymoon. He married Jennifer Hagel in June 2005. Both of them were young and beautiful. He came from an old-line Greenwich family; she, from blue-collar Cromwell and with a reputation for being a flirt. Just eight days after their wedding, their new life together disintegrated on their Royal Caribbean honeymoon cruise. The morning after several booze-fueled melees, a gruesome blood stain traced the awning below their cabin, and George had vanished. After four years of bitter legal wrangling with both families, Royal Caribbean recently handed over its files to the FBI, which announced that Smith's murder is “very active and open.” Man Overboard provides an extraordinary look into a case that has captured the public imagination and raised provocative questions about the unregulated cruise industry, leading directly to the historic Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act signed by President Obama.

  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Eternal Mayhem written by Aniruddha Bose and published by Smriti Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book Poetics, the Greek philosopher Aristotle, asserted suspense is the fulcrum of all thrillers, with a fusion of trepidation, thrill, expectancy, anxiety, collocated with a feel of pandering tensity, captivation, fright, fervour. The readers seize with teeth the plot, as it converges to an aleatory, cryptic and stirring climax, leaving them to ruminate.Typically, a baddie-driven one, balked by red herrings, twists, to a bewitching cliff-hanger. Pigeon-holed, the author destroys hope, elicits curiosity and springs surprise, out of the blue. This is the form of the customary mystery, psychologic, political or romantic sub-genres.Gone are the days of ancient epics, Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer's Odyssey, Mahābhārata. With evolving era, the art of story-telling has undergone radical mutation.Revering them, my attempt was to carve a new scientific sub-genre relevant to this era. The prevalent construct of private detective is trompe-l’oeil. My debut to the ambit was with a novel perception, flouting the abstruse idea with a realistic one. Among the legion deaths, deputed buffs could carry the probe. Many quotidian folks could astutely scrutinise the conundrum, until one hits the final bonanza. With this scalage, it capsized the age-old detective myths initiated by Edgar Ala Poe, to a realistic podium. Though probe was by apposite folks, solution came from the victor. In my first mystery novel, CHAKRA (Bengali 2010) later as FULCRUM (English 2013), amongst heretical ways of several murders, the booklover is in pursuit of the killer-boffo duo. Later, in PURSUIT (2013), besides original homicidal methods, I ciphered a subtly furtive profound insight into extropy of global dynamics. I fused the elided outlook of tralatitious thrillers with a philosophy for humanity. The traditional ‘protagonist’ waffled between effector and the seer.Scientific thrillers involve a sixth sense into the core of science, history, evolution with a far-flung eagle view of progress. ETERNAL MAYHEM is one of such kind spotless adrenaline raiser, a touch chalk and cheese grand narrative with numerous puzzling scientific murders occurring worldwide. This complex cliff-hanger keeps the reader’s adrenaline spurting from the onset as scientific murders take place in exotic global locations. Beautiful lassies, intelligentsia, global scientists are trapped in this white-knuckle masterpiece with all the twirl and twists that will keep the readers rapt. This volume is more than a murder mystery, to transport you from your comfy lounger to a steaming isle, be it Bali, Fiji, Hawaii, Maldives, Bora Bora, Punta Cana or exotic nooks of Jamaica and Puerto Rico. This gripping craft keeps you on your feet, as the global scientific world of genetics gets swathed in the whodunit. Amid the scientific essence of genetic cloning research, it’s a scarper from the familiar concepts, to the roots of civilisation with its resultant diversities. It reveals shocking truths, so far clandestine. The apogee seals in a startling eye-opening truth of humanity, offering a thought-provoking riveting thriller.
