Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled in the over-the-mountain suburbia of Birmingham, Mountain Brook was originally hunting grounds for Creek, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Chickasaw Indians. First settled in the 1820s in the area called Shades Valley, it was not until 1926 that Robert Jemison Jr. began developing Mountain Brook Estates into its present form. Jemison had enormous vision honoring its natural beauty, and he hired regional planner and landscape architect Warren H. Manning of Boston to design a secluded residential community of handsome homes and amenities. Mountain Brook was incorporated in 1942 and experienced a resurgence of growth and expansion after World War II. The neighborhoods were designed to be anchored by villages as community centers for residents within walking distance. Still in touch with the vision and principles on which Robert Jemison founded Mountain Brook, its citizens enjoy the avant-garde villages full of restaurants, specialty gift shops, groceries, and parks, as well as its scenic natural landscape.

Book excerpt: Now with a new afterword, the Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatic account of the civil rights era’s climactic battle in Birmingham as the movement, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., brought down the institutions of segregation. "The Year of Birmingham," 1963, was a cataclysmic turning point in America’s long civil rights struggle. Child demonstrators faced down police dogs and fire hoses in huge nonviolent marches against segregation. Ku Klux Klansmen retaliated by bombing the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, killing four young black girls. Diane McWhorter, daughter of a prominent Birmingham family, weaves together police and FBI records, archival documents, interviews with black activists and Klansmen, and personal memories into an extraordinary narrative of the personalities and events that brought about America’s second emancipation. In a new afterword—reporting last encounters with hero Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and describing the current drastic anti-immigration laws in Alabama—the author demonstrates that Alabama remains a civil rights crucible.

In those days the music they played was so new, it was difficult to find records of it or hear it on the radio. Each time they composed a tune they were creating a new sound, which would become known as rockabilly. These were the godfathers of rock & roll and this is their story.

Book A Day at the Beach

Download or read book A Day at the Beach written by Geoffrey Wolff and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A memoir of uncommon grace and self-deprecating charm" (Newsday) that recounts the moral (and sometimes immoral) education of a writer, friend, husband, and father—from the acclaimed author of The Duke of Deception. In this essay collection, Geoffrey Wolff shows us his wildly dysfunctional childhood Christmases—presided over by his con-man father—then shifts to his brash, short-lived teaching career in Istanbul. With dazzling literary agility, Wolff guides us through the surprising, invaluable turns that shaped his path: his victory over the chaos of drink, his open-heart surgery, his life-affirming surrender to the slopes of the Matterhorn, and his transcendent love of family. Long considered a classic, now expanded and back in print after two decades, A Day at the Beach shares Wolff's spirited, elegant, and deeply felt observations on an extraordinary life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newlywed woman’s return to Southern society begins an epic and hilarious journey of self-discovery in this satirical novel. Katherine Clark’s The Harvard Bride begins with the wedding of Daniel Dobbs and Caroline Elmore, college sweethearts introduced in Clark’s novel, All the Governor’s Men. In this wry comedy of manners, their new life—complete with freshly minted Ivy League educations—begins in the “Tiny Kingdom” of Mountain Brook, Alabama. Unwilling to join the Junior League, look for a house, contemplate motherhood, or even finish her thank-you notes, Caroline can’t seem to find her bearings—or even fulfill her calling as a writer. Meanwhile, Daniel’s law career is going so well she hardly sees him. The most exciting aspect of her life is her handsome next-door neighbor, who also happens to be a writer. The reappearance of an old school friend, a southern belle bombshell in hot pursuit of all eligible bachelors and potential real estate clients, only adds to Caroline’s problems. When she accepts a surprise job offer at the University of Alabama, she begins to put together an identity of her own—until it falls inexplicably apart. Also featuring the return of larger-than-life Brook-Haven headmaster Norman Laney, The Harvard Bride is at once a social satire and a richly nuanced love story.

Download or read book Class Matters written by The New York Times and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed New York Times series on social class in America—and its implications for the way we live our lives We Americans have long thought of ourselves as unburdened by class distinctions. We have no hereditary aristocracy or landed gentry, and even the poorest among us feel that they can become rich through education, hard work, or sheer gumption. And yet social class remains a powerful force in American life. In Class Matters, a team of New York Times reporters explores the ways in which class—defined as a combination of income, education, wealth, and occupation—influences destiny in a society that likes to think of itself as a land of opportunity. We meet individuals in Kentucky and Chicago who have used education to lift themselves out of poverty and others in Virginia and Washington whose lack of education holds them back. We meet an upper-middle-class family in Georgia who moves to a different town every few years, and the newly rich in Nantucket whose mega-mansions have driven out the longstanding residents. And we see how class disparities manifest themselves at the doctor's office and at the marriage altar. For anyone concerned about the future of the American dream, Class Matters is truly essential reading. "Class Matters is a beautifully reported, deeply disturbing, portrait of a society bent out of shape by harsh inequalities. Read it and see how you fit into the problem or—better yet—the solution!"—Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed and Bait and Switch
