Book Mound Builders Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mound Builders Classic Reprint written by W. J. Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mound-Builders The mounds they have left are found in the western part of the State of New York and extend, it is said, as far as Nebraska. And as they have lately been found in the North west, they have thus a much more northern limit than was at first thought, while the southern limit is the Gulf of Mexico. Having seen only a few mounds in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, I must confine my paper to those found in the State of Ohio, where, during a residence of seventeen months, I made the closest investigation my time and duties permitted. In Ohio, the number of mounds, including enclosures of different kinds, is estimated at about though it requires the greatest care to distinguish between the mounds proper and those subsequently erected by the Indians. In some parts they are very close together, which is strong evidence that these regions were densely populated. In others, a solitary mound, with adjacent burial mounds, gives us the idea of a rural village or town. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Mound Builders: A Thesis To ask or search, I blame thee not; for heaven Is as the book of God before thee set, Wherein to read his wondrous works. Let any traveler start from Wisconsin and traverse the Mississippi Valley to the Gulf of Mexico, and cross the country from the Alleghenies to the Western Plateau, and throughout his course he will find thousands of mounds of earth with a conical or pyramidal apex, and containing within their interior relics of human remains and inventions. When a traveler asks the origin and reasons of these mounds, he is almost invariably met with the enigmatical answer, Indian mounds. They were not made by the Indians whom Columbus found on this continent; in fact, their origin was unknown to the Red Man, since they found them here, and they looked as recent to the first European adventurers, with the remains of ancient forests on their sum mits, as they do to us now. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mound Builders, Vol. 1: Their Works and Relics Some forty years ago it was held that the Mississippi valley must have been settled by a civilized people who had migrated from some historic country. Silver sword scabbards, iron knives, Hebrew inscriptions, triune vases, and other curious relics, were dwelt upon as proving this. The Mormon delusion grew out of an erroneous theory as to the lost tribes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archaeological History of Ohio: The Mound Builders and Later Indians Many persons interested in archaeology are desirous of extending their knowledge, but have not the time, opportunity, or perhaps courage to wade through the vast amount of literature that has accumulated on this subject in the past fifty years. To lighten this labor, an attempt is made in the following pages to compile so much of it as relates to Ohio antiquities, and present it in convenient form. As certain features of Ohio archaeology can not be understood when considered alone, there must be brought into the work a number of descriptions of remains. Outside her borders. This is the more necessary owing to the general impression that traces of the Mound Builders, wherever found or of whatever nature, belong to one race existing within one definite period of time. To the writer has been assigned the task of preparing the manu script and selecting the illustrations; the reproduction of the latter and the publication of the entire work has been assumed by the Ohio Archae ological and Historical Society. Most of the figures, except those in the chapter on relics, have been borrowed from the sources indicated in the text. The explanation of abbreviated references will be found in the appendix. It matters not to us whether they dwelt undersa monarchical or popular form of polity Lidw'hether king or council ruled their realms; nor, in fine, what was their exact out ward condition. It is enough for us to know, and enough for our humanity to inquire, that they existed, toiled, felt and suffered; that to' them fell, in these pleasant regions, their portion ofthe common heritage of our race, and that around those ancient hearth-stones, washed to light on the banks of the far western rivers, once gossipedand enjoyed life, a nation that has utter ly faded'away. We are moved deeply in looking I' upon their mortuary remains - those disinterred and stately skeletons - for we know that they once full of human impulses, and heads warm with J. Book The Mound Builders

Download or read book The Mound Builders written by George Bryce and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mound Builders is an archeological work by George Bryce. Bryce was a Presbyterian minister and author, here delving into certain types of historical structures found in Canada. Excerpt: "The mounds have long been known as occurring in Central America, in Mexico, and along the whole extent of the Mississippi valley from the Gulf of Mexico to the great lakes. Our Northwest has, however, been neglected in the accounts of the mound-bearing region. Along our Red River I can count some six or eight mounds that have been noted in late years, and from the banks having been peopled and cultivated I have little doubt that others have been obliterated. One formerly stood on the site of the new unfinished Canadian Pacific Hotel in this city. The larger number of those known are in the neighborhood of the rapids, 16 or 18 miles below Winnipeg where the fishing is good. In 1879 the Historical Society opened one of these, and obtained a considerable quantity of remains. It is reported that there are mounds also on Nettley Creek, a tributary of the lower Red River, also on Lake Manitoba and some of its affluents. During the past summer it was my good fortune to visit the Rainy River, which lies some half way of the distance from Winnipeg to Lake Superior. In that delightful stretch of country, extending for 90 miles along the river there are no less than 21 mounds. These I identify with the mounds of Red River. The communication between Red and Rainy River is effected by ascending the Red Lake River, and coming by portage to a river running from the south into Rainy River. Both Red and Rainy River easily connect with the head waters of the Mississippi. Our region then may be regarded as a self-contained district including the most northerly settlements of the strange race who built the mounds. I shall try to connect them with other branches of the same stock, lying further to the east and south. For convenience I shall speak of the extinct people who inhabited our special region as the Takawgamis, or farthest north mound builders."

Book The Mound Builders

Download or read book The Mound Builders written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mound Builders: The Greatest Monument of Prehistoric Man; Cahokia or Monks Mound This truncated, terraced form of mound had its analogy in many of the temples of Mexico and Central America, and indeed in many of the early works of Oriental nations. Such is the monarch, man-made mountain as it was raised above the plain in the midst of this Mound Builders' country. The first view, to the archaeological student, is apt to be dispelling of a preconceived idea, which is usually that of the mound in its architectural prime. Its origi nal clear-cut lines and arithmetical proportions are blunted by the wear of age. Deep furrows have marred its sides and wrinkled its front. Though resisting valiantly, it has bowed to the storms of nature and the vandal assaults of civilized man. Book The Mound Builders

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mound Builders: Being an Account of a Remarkable People That Once Inhabited the Valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi, Together With an Investigation Into the Archaeology of Butler County, O Within the last few years much interest has been developed in American archaeology, especially in that branch relating to the Mound Builders. The mystery surrounding this lost people creates a fascination which is greatly increased in the mind of the student of nature as he lingers among the ruins which invite his attention and rivet his eye. Standing upon one of the monuments the lover of the mysterious will lose himself in meditation, or else in imagination will behold a strange people toiling under the heat of a burning sun, or perhaps see them suffering from the effects of a winters wind while erecting structures devoted to such rites as are recorded in the pages of history. There are others who behold these remains and although taking no particular interest in original investigation, yet desire to obtain such information as may be known concerning them. The mounds, even separated from their history, have an interest in themselves. When one sees them he cannot help but pay more than a passing notice. Hence it might be presumed that public attention was early called to the ancient earth-works of Ohio. In the year 1772 Rev. David Jones first publicly noticed their existence. Twelve years later Arthur Lee wrote concerning them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley written by Lucien Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley: Historically Considered TN a papef upon the Prehistoric Remains of Kentucky, published in the first volume iof these Memoirs, I have expressed the opinion that it was impossible to distinguish between a series of stone implements taken from the mounds in the Mississippi Valley, and a similar series made and used by the modern Indians. In fact, so alike are these objects in conception and execution, that any attempt to distinguish them, based' upon form or finish, must be but the merest guesswork. From the rude knife to the carved and polished gorget, they may, one and all, have been taken from the inmost recesses of a mound, or picked up on the surface amid the debris of a recent Indian Village; and the most experienced archaeologist, if called upon to decide as to their origin, would have to acknowledge himself at N or does this similarity step with objects made of stone. Onthe contrary, it is believed to extend to all the articles, of every kind whatso ever, that have thus far been taken from the mounds. Indeed, I might even go farther, and as the result of some years of work, as well in the field as in the library, venture the assertion that not only has there not, as yet, been anything taken from the mounds indicating a higher stage of develop ment than the red Indian of the United States is known to have reached, but that even the mounds themselves, and under this head are included all the earth-works of the Mississippi Valley, were quite within the limits of his efforts.
