Book Novel Highway Signs Study to Support Infrastructure Based Motorcycle Crash Countermeasures Phase II

Download or read book Novel Highway Signs Study to Support Infrastructure Based Motorcycle Crash Countermeasures Phase II written by Starla Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motorcycle crashes make up a disproportionately high number of crashes on the Nation's roadways. Warning signs have the potential to reduce motorcycle crashes by drawing the attention of road users to situations that may be particularly hazardous for motorcyclists. The current study examined the potential for novel signs to be used as motorcycle-crash countermeasures. Based on research conducted as part of an initial project entitled New/Novel Highway Signs to Support Infrastructure-Based Motorcycle-Crash Countermeasures: Phase I Project and a review of the relevant literature, four categories of potential signs were selected: motorcycle awareness, advance curve warning, pavement condition, and limited sight distance signs.(1) Next, the research team generated a preliminary set of novel signs designed specifically to target the needs of motorcyclists. Feedback on this preliminarily sign set was solicited from motorcyclists via an online questionnaire. The research team used results from the questionnaire to narrow and refine the stimulus set. Finally, an experimental assessment of sign comprehension and legibility of the novel signs was conducted using both motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists. The result is a prioritized list of five novel signs that may serve as effective motorcycle-crash countermeasures.

Book Identifying Infrastructure based Motorcycle crash Countermeasures

Download or read book Identifying Infrastructure based Motorcycle crash Countermeasures written by A. Trueblood and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, the Federal Highway Administration sponsored a project to identify three to five infrastructure-based motorcycle-crash countermeasures to consider for future research. To develop a list of prioritized infrastructure-based motorcycle-crash countermeasures, a workshop titled Identifying Infrastructure-Based Motorcycle-Crash Countermeasures was conducted on February 13, 2018, in Arlington, VA. The workshop opened with an introduction that provided participants with results from the prior tasks of the project, including an analysis of the data from the Motorcycle Crash Causation Study and a literature review.Participants discussed countermeasures from the prior tasks as well as the addition of other countermeasures. At the end of the workshop, a number of participants voted for their preferred countermeasures to develop a list of prioritized countermeasures. This report presents the workshop overview and results.

Book Motorcycle Safety at Signalized Intersections

Download or read book Motorcycle Safety at Signalized Intersections written by Md. Mazharul Haque and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motorcycles are overrepresented in road traffic crashes and particularly vulnerable at signalized intersections. 'Motorcycle safety at signalized intersections' provides an in-depth understanding of hazards of motorcycles at signalized intersections and suggests some targeted countermeasures to alleviate the problem. Motorcycle safety has been examined by establishing innovative statistical models with detailed investigation on specific maneuver behavior of motorcycles at intersections. Results indicate that motorcyclists are over exposed at signalized intersections and the excess exposure is one of main contributors to their vulnerability at intersections. The presence of red light cameras at intersections not only lower motorcycle crashes due to reduced red-light running in the conflicting stream but also decrease their exposure and hence crashes due to a more restrained discharge pattern of motorcycles. Targeted countermeasures should include deployment of red-light cameras, improvement in motorcyclist visibility and increased awareness on motorcyclist vulnerability.

Book Infrastructure Countermeasures to Mitigate Motorcyclist Crashes in Europe

Download or read book Infrastructure Countermeasures to Mitigate Motorcyclist Crashes in Europe written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The number and rate of motorcyclist deaths on U.S. roads are rising dramatically. The Federal Highway Administration, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and National Cooperative Highway Research Program sponsored a scanning study of five European countries to evaluate infrastructure improvements to aid motorcyclists. The scan team found that the types of infrastructure safety improvements used in Europe, with the exception of motorcycle-friendly roadside barriers, were those that generally improved safety for all vehicle classes. The biggest differences the team observed were in behavioral safety, helmet laws, training, and licensing. The team also noted great cooperation between road authorities and stakeholder groups representing motorcycle riders. Team recommendations for U.S. implementation include filling in knowledge gaps to improve motorcycle safety, conducting research on motorcycle infrastructure safety, and updating design guidelines to accommodate motorcyclist safety"--Tech. report doc. page.

Book ITF Research Reports Improving Safety for Motorcycle Scooter and Moped Riders

Download or read book ITF Research Reports Improving Safety for Motorcycle Scooter and Moped Riders written by International Transport Forum and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global fleet of powered two-wheelers (PTWs) is constantly increasing. In many countries, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds play a significant role in mobility, particularly in many of the world’s large cities. As such, PTWs are becoming an important component of the transport system.
