Besides, there goes your rival, Jimmy, right now, in his little dinky boat, and with a wide grin on his face. Jack's given him a holiday, to celebrate the opening of the great fishing contest. Get a move on, you slow-poke!”“Gee! then he'll get a start on me. I must hurry. Now, where in the dickens is that other oar, George? Oh! here she is, tucked away under the thwart. And can you tell me what I did with that mullet the cracker gentleman gave me, to use for bait? Please help me get started, George. Seems like everything wants to go wrong at once!”“Here you are, Nick. Got your tackle all right, have you; and sure that life preserver is in the boat? All ready? Then away you go; but keep clear of the inlet, if the tide changes, or you might get carried out to sea in that eight-foot dinky.”

"Rats! speak for yourself, Josh!" exclaimed the fifth member of the party, whose name seemed to be George, and who was a nervous, active boy, one of those kind who are always wanting to do things in a hurry; "didn't I see you get a lavender colored letter only last week, and when I walked past him purposely in the post office, fellows, oh! my goodness! you ought to have sniffed the lovely perfume that oozed out of that envelope. Did Josh tear the end off? Not that I could notice; but he took out his knife, and cut it so carefully like, you'd think--"

Book Motor Boat Boys on the St Lawrence

Book excerpt: The Motor Boat Boys, by Louis Arundel, is a series of adventure books for boys. The series featured six teen boys of the Motor Boat Club, and their adventures on various waterways. There were just five in the bunch, dusty, tired fellows, all on the way home from a most exciting game with a rival team, and the most bitter rivals for supremacy in the little river town along the upper Mississippi.Besides Buster and Jack, there were the Irish lad, Jimmie Brannagan, who lived with the Stormways, being something of a ward of Jack's father; Herb Dickson, and George Rollins, all of them members of the high school team. These five boys, with the addition of another who was not present just then, composed the membership of a motor boat club, and between them owned three very clever craft. George's was a narrow speedboat, called the Wireless, the powerful engine of which had a faculty for getting out of order just when most wanted. The one of which Jack was skipper was named the Tramp, and while not so fast as its dangerous competitor, could still make great time. Herb possessed a commodious launch, which he had very wisely christened the Comfort, for she was as staunch and reliable as a houseboat.During the preceding autumn, taking advantage of the school being closed until New Year's because of an epidemic in the town, these boys had made a long trip down the Mississippi river to New Orleans, being given permission by their parents or guardians.
