Book excerpt: Trying to understand connections between Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) and service-learning could improve the implementation process of this pedagogy in FCS courses. According to Giles and Eyler (1998), identifying ways by which service-learning can enhance subject matter learning is the first of their top ten unanswered questions in service-learning research. The primary objective of this study was to examine characteristics of FCS collegiate faculty who do and do not incorporate service-learning in their teaching, determine their teaching efficacy levels and dominant teaching perspectives, examine their perceptions about service-learning as an effective teaching strategy within FCS, and identify the factors that motivate and deter FCS faculty's use of service-learning. Survey results from 375 FCS faculty members in institutions of higher education across the United States confirm the belief that service-learning can be an effective tool for learning and teaching within FCS. Almost 60% of the FCS faculty reported to have implemented service-learning in their teaching. Both service-learning and non service-learning faculty, in general, had high teaching efficacy levels. The dominant teaching practice for all faculty was Reflective-Ethical, irrespective of whether they were service-learning or non service-learning faculty. Service-learning faculty received encouragement from department chairpersons and other colleagues in the department. Advice from colleagues and attendance at professional organizations and conferences provided faculty with useful instructional support. Student outcomes motivated faculty most in their decisions to incorporate service-learning. Concerns related to time, logistics, and funding; reward structure; and inability to use service-learning effectively were reported to be potential factors that might cause faculty to discontinue their service-learning efforts. For non service-learning faculty, issues related to time, logistics, and funding; and curricular and pedagogical concerns, were the greatest deterrents to using service-learning.

Book excerpt: This study explored the motivations of college faculty who teach social justice lessons through their service learning courses. In recent decades, universities have begun to respond to calls for a renewal in their civic missions, and educating students on civic responsibility and social justice issues (Boyer, 1994; Boyte & Hollander, 1999; Ehrlich, 2000). Faculty have been shown to be the critical facilitators in brining social justice topics to the curriculum through the use of service learning instruction (Buchanan, 1998; Ward, 2003). Given the emphasis in higher education today on social justice learning outcomes and the importance of the role of faculty, there is surprisingly no previous research on faculty motivation to teach social justice lessons through service learning. For this study, there were two guiding research questions: (1) what aspects of the faculty's individual backgrounds influence their teaching of social justice topics? (2) What are faculty's perceptions of the impact that service learning has on student learning? The setting of the study was a large research university in the southwest. Data were collected from 11 faculty through individual interviews and supplemented by course-related artifacts. Data were analyzed using coding procedures suggested by Strauss and Corbin (2008) from a grounded theory qualitative approach. Results indicated that faculty motivation to use service learning to teach social justice lessons was based on several core themes. These themes included: 1) the faculty's personal background; 2) individual identity and role as faculty; 3) faculty's perceived desired student outcomes; and 4) faculty reflection of observed student outcomes. In addition to the key themes, results showed that faculty did enjoy their teaching approach, an enjoyment that reinforced their motivation to continue to teach. Faculty in lecturer positions indicated that they believed they were adding special student experiences through social justice lessons that were void in other aspects of their education. Faculty with tenure indicated that although they were providing social experiences for students, they also tended to combine their social justice instruction with their research work. A model of faculty motivation for teaching social justice topics was presented. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

If practice such as service-learning is a bold departure from the status quo, however, research is not just beneficial, it is critical. If schools are to become laboratories of democracy and entrepreneurship, and if students are to become engaged as partners in renewal of their communities, a research case must be made for service-learning. Does learning take place? Will other kinds of learning suffer? What kinds of practice are most effective? Clearly, solid research is essential if this transforming way of teaching and learning is to be fully integrated into American schooling and youth development institutions. The National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) took a first step toward joining service-learning practice with research in 1983. In 1991, NYLC created a center which initiated and encouraged program evaluation, formative research that informs and improves practice, and summative studies that measure results. This volume grew out of a National Service-Learning Conference--an annual event convened by the NYLC. A day long research seminar at the conference brought together researchers to discuss the latest developments among themselves and with practitioners. Impressive in their range and rigor, their papers offer documentation and analysis useful to an emerging research knowledge base. It is a starting point for the evidence needed to firmly establish service-learning for K-12 age people as a widely accepted way of teaching and learning.

Impact studies have demonstrated a wide range of interpersonal outcomes including a sense of efficacy, connection to community, appreciation for diverse populations, and interest in course work to name a few. Yet critics have recently argued that the developmental outcomes of service-learning do not sufficiently examine cognitive development. Further, it is not clear whether interpersonal outcomes interact with the intellectual outcomes attributed to the courses affiliated with the service. This groundbreaking book examines whether exposure to and immersion in a service-learning program is in any way related to cognitive development. The researcher identified traditionally-aged college students who were selected by service-learning faculty as demonstrating an exemplary commitment to, and engagement in, service-learning. This study utilized The Service Learning Model, developed by Delve, Mintz, and Stewart (1990), to examine, describe, and assess depth of engagement in service at two points in time. William Perry's Scheme of Intellectual and Ethical Development (1970) was used to examine possible cognitive development. Results reveal a new pathway of deepening engagement in service. The growing body of research on college student participation in service-learning has documented the generally small, positive effects of service-learning on student development. A casual observer may attribute this effort to be successful, however, a closer examination of service-learning begs the question: Is a small, positive effect the type of learning we expect and are we accomplishing the learning objectives of the academy, not to mention, meeting community needs? The focus on what students are learning, rather than on how they learn best, leaves us with an unsettling uncertainty regarding the outcomes of service-learning. In order to focus on how students may learn best, this book focuses on an examination of individuals, as compared with groups, and of individuals that exhibit some of the outcomes that service-learning claims to promote. This book examines whether any students report that service-learning enriches their course of study resulting in the development of critical thinking skills (among other cognitive skills), in addition to interpersonal skills. This book shows that direct service experience involving an emotional or psychological (affective) connection with a community member or members receiving services prompts an assessment of the participants' place in society. In responding to these emotions, students participated in service more frequently and with deeper engagement. Exposure to and immersion in direct service experiences, along with subsequent reflection prior to involvement in a service-learning program, are the mediating factors for the preparation of exemplars to initiate the interest necessary to develop cognitive skills. This book shows that interpersonal, affective development is the precursor for participants' readiness for cognitive development in a service-learning program. A developmental scheme of engagement, student development interactions, recommendations for faculty for optimal development in service-learning, and recommendations for future practice are presented in this book that will be a valuable addition for all collections in education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine faculty attitudes toward the integration of service-learning into the curriculum at community colleges. Service-learning is defined as a credit-bearing methodology that combines community service and classroom instruction, which allows the student to take what they have learned in the classroom to the community, thus fulfilling their civic responsibility. The research design for this study was a sequential mixed method (Creswell, 2003). The quantitative approach included a survey distributed to 1,220 full-time faculty at 12 community colleges in Maryland. The statistical analyses utilized were ANOVA, Pearson's r correlation, and Chi-square test to determine statistically significant relationships between variables in this study. A path analysis was constructed to identify the factors that contributed to faculty attitudes toward service-learning. The qualitative analysis examined the level of institutionalization of service-learning at the participating colleges. Interviews were conducted with college administrators, and the responses were analyzed using Curry's Three Conditions of Institutionalization: structural, procedural, and cultural integration. The findings identified three prevailing barriers to integrating service-learning in the curriculum: (1) lack of institutional support, (2) faculty reluctance to shift in their teaching orientation from teaching to learning, and (3) the misconception of community college faculty in regards to the level of scholarship associated with service-learning pedagogy. The implications of this study were grounded around the three conditions for institutionalization for service-learning: structural, procedural, and cultural integration. A major implication for the structural area suggested a need for community college leaders to integrate service-learning with academic and student affairs divisions to ensure the success of service-learning. In addition, in the area of procedural integration, operating procedures and policies are needed if service-learning is to be sustained. An implication for cultural integration indicated a need for college leaders to examine faculty attitudes, values, and their perceptions of service-learning if service-learning is to be effectively integrated into the curriculum. Several areas for future research emerged from the study. In particular, a comparison of faculty who have integrated service-learning and those who have not can provide significant data to reveal the benefits of the infusion of service-learning into the community college curriculum. -- Abstract.
