Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller that gives readers a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Book Return on Character

Download or read book Return on Character written by Fred Kiel and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the character of our leaders matter? You may think this question was answered long ago. Countless business authors and analysts have assured us that great leadership demands great character. Time and again, we’ve seen that truth play out, as once-thriving organizations falter and fail under the guidance of leaders behaving badly. Why, then, do so many executives remain skeptical about the true value of leadership character? A winning strategy and a sound business model are what really matter, they argue; character is just the icing on the cake. What’s been missing from this debate is hard evidence: data that shows not only that leadership character matters for organizational success, but how it matters; and concrete evidence that it leads to better business results. Now, in this groundbreaking book, respected leadership researcher, adviser, and author Fred Kiel offers that evidence—solid data that demonstrates the connection between character, leadership excellence, and organizational results. After seven years of rigorous research based on a landmark study of more than 100 CEOs and over 8,000 of their employees’ observations, Kiel’s findings show that leaders of strong character achieved up to five times the ROA for their organizations as did leaders of weak character. Return on Character goes on to reveal: • How leadership character is formed, how it creates value, and how that value spreads throughout the organization • How low-character leaders undermine the success of even the best business plans • How leaders at any level can develop the habits of strong character and “unlearn” the habits of poor character The book also provides a character-building methodology—step-by-step advice and techniques for assessing your own character habits and improving your performance and that of your organization. Return on Character provides the blueprint for building your own leadership character and creating a character-driven organization that achieves superior business results.

Book The Elephant in the Brain

Download or read book The Elephant in the Brain written by Kevin Simler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather, but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus we don't like to talk or even think about the extent of our selfishness. This is the elephant in the brain. Such an introspective taboo makes it hard for us to think clearly about our nature and the explanations for our behavior. The aim of this book, then, is to confront our hidden motives directly - to track down the darker, unexamined corners of our psyches and blast them with floodlights. Then, once everything is clearly visible, we can work to better understand ourselves: Why do we laugh? Why are artists sexy? Why do we brag about travel? Why do we prefer to speak rather than listen? Our unconscious motives drive more than just our private behavior; they also infect our venerated social institutions such as Art, School, Charity, Medicine, Politics, and Religion. In fact, these institutions are in many ways designed to accommodate our hidden motives, to serve covert agendas alongside their official ones. The existence of big hidden motives can upend the usual political debates, leading one to question the legitimacy of these social institutions, and of standard policies designed to favor or discourage them. You won't see yourself - or the world - the same after confronting the elephant in the brain.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of human civilization, music has been used as a device to control social behavior, where it has operated as much to promote solidarity within groups as hostility between competing groups. Music is an emotive manipulator that influences attitude, motivation and behavior at many levels and in many contexts. This volume is the first to address the social ramifications of music’s behaviorally manipulative effects, its morally questionable uses and control mechanisms, and its economic and artistic regulation through commercialization, thus highlighting not only music’s diverse uses at the social level but also the ever-fragile relationship between aesthetics and morality.

Book The Effects of Motivational Manipulations on Conative Processes Task Evaluations and Ego depetion

Download or read book The Effects of Motivational Manipulations on Conative Processes Task Evaluations and Ego depetion written by Christian Magaraggia and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of manipulations related to autonomy (or lack thereof) on a range of evaluative, conative and self-regulatory processes in the context of health-related outcomes. In the first investigation, differences in exercise-related goals were examined between participants primed with autonomous, controlled, or neutral material. It was found that autonomy-primed individuals set exercise goals that were longer in intended duration than those set by the controlled- and neutral-primed individuals. An indirect prospective relationship between prime and exercise behaviour was also found, with autonomy-primed individuals participating in longer goal-based exercise sessions via their exercise goals. These findings provide evidence that motivation primes may influence downstream conscious processing, and that priming might be a valuable tool to utilise during traditional goal setting programs. In the second study, participants engaged in an exercise session in either an indoor setting, or an identical session in a green outdoor setting, and were then exposed to a brief post-session intrinsic or extrinsic motivation prime. It was hypothesized that participants exposed to the intrinsic prime, relative to those exposed to the extrinsic prime, would report higher levels of intrinsic motivation, choice, and monetary worth in relation to the completed exercise session. Furthermore, these effects were only expected in the indoor recreation centre condition, with no differences expected between priming groups on any of the dependent variables in the outside condition. In support of the hypotheses, results indicated that perceived monetary value of the exercise class only differed according to prime in the indoor environment (but not in the outdoor environment). There was no evidence to support the hypotheses relating to exercise enjoyment and choice. The third investigation explored the possibility that controlled and autonomous learning conditions could alter the consumption of snack food, and also examined whether snack consumption during a controlled learning activity could increase subsequent performance on a self-regulation task. Results indicated that the autonomous learning group consumed significantly less snack food than the controlled learning group who also received food. Participants in the autonomous condition also performed better on the subsequent self-regulation task than those in the controlled-learning-and-food group, even after controlling for the amount of food consumed. Within the controlled-learning-and-food condition, there was no association between food consumption and subsequent self-regulation task performance.

This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all groups -- from couples to nation-states -- people influence one another. Much of this influence is benign, for example giving advice to friends or serving as role models for our children and students. Some forms of influence, however, are clearly morally suspect, such as threats of violence and blackmail. A great deal of attention has been paid to one form of morally suspect influence, namely coercion. Less attention has been paid to what might be a more pervasive form of influence: manipulation. The essays in this volume address this relative imbalance by focusing on manipulation, examining its nature, moral status, and its significance in personal and social life. They address a number of central questions: What counts as manipulation? How is it distinguished from coercion and ordinary rational persuasion? Is it always wrong, or can it sometimes be justified, and if so, when? Is manipulative influence more benign than coercion? Can one manipulate unintentionally? How does being manipulated to act bear on one's moral responsibly for so acting? Given various answers to these questions, what should we think of practices such as advertising and seduction?

Book Systematic Manipulation of Motivating Operations in Verbal Behavior Research

Download or read book Systematic Manipulation of Motivating Operations in Verbal Behavior Research written by James P. Holland and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early work in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis recognized the importance of motivational variables and the need to treat them as independent variables subject to manipulation. The topic of motivation was virtually absent from the literature from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. As the topic of motivation re-emerged in the applied literature in the late 1980's research and treatment programs based on Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior emerged as well. Over the last 25 years intervention packages that incorporate Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and systematic manipulation of motivative operations have built a solid record of success with individuals with language delays or developmental disabilities. This paper will provide a review of applied research incorporating Skinner's functional analysis of language and systematic manipulations of motivative variables for the years 2000--2009.
