Book Motivation Emotions and Leadership

Download or read book Motivation Emotions and Leadership written by Richard L. Fulton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-10-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is motivation and motivation is leadership, say the authors of this important and unique study. The two elements are inseparable, but until now no one has actually conceptualized motivation in a useful way to demonstrate and analyze the connection between it and leadership. The key for leaders is dealing with the emotions that underlie and activate motivation. Maddock and Fulton provide a highly successful, proven, and replicable approach not only to motivate people, but also to train them to lead others. The authors develop an 11 level structure of human motivation that defines and describes motivation in simple, graphic, all-inclusive language. They then show how leaders can use this motivational hierarchy to solve complex problems in the workplace. The result is a blueprint to help executives in all types of organizations manage more effectively, and as they do so, to motivate and truly lead the people who depend on them for guidance and direction. Maddock and Fulton offer several scenarios to show how their ideas work in practice. In the vertical fix they demonstrate how motives that get out of synch with each other can be re-aligned, eliminating the chaos that would otherwise occur. In the lateral fix they show how a person who may be functioning at the extreme edge of motivation can be moved back toward the center, a place where the person's effect on others is most and best felt. Well documented throughout, their book will be important reading for training and development professionals, specialists in organizational behavior, and executives at all levels in public and private sectors.

Book Leading with Feeling

Download or read book Leading with Feeling written by Cary Cherniss and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tom was a young engineer employed at one of the country's largest steel companies. He had been an outstanding individual performer, and now he was a new manager, leading a team responsible for producing steel for a major automobile company. After just one week on the job, Tom and his team met with over 20 engineers from that other company. It was a rude awakening. I sat in a room with maybe 20 or 25 of their engineers for the annual quality evaluation of suppliers. And I learned for the first time that we were in the bottom of the bottom quartile as a supplier. We had lousy quality, we had lousy invoicing, we had lousy on-time delivery. And this was my first general manager role! I had grown up as an engineer. And how did Tom respond to this unexpected shock? I had a holy shit moment! I had been in the job literally a week. So part of it was, 'Oh my God, what the hell am I going to do?' Also I thought about how my guys had been in the business for a while, and I thought, 'What the hell have you been doing?' And I was thinking, 'I'm going to clean house!' But then... I've learned that you just can't react viscerally every time something comes up because it just scares people away. So Tom listened attentively as the engineers from the auto company presented their litany of complaints. When they finally finished, he stood up and said, "I wouldn't blame you if you fired us as a supplier. But if you give us a chance to fix these problems, I guarantee you that that we will not have this kind of meeting next year." When Tom met with his team the next morning to discuss the situation, he started by just listening to them. They went on for some time complaining about how the company and their previous boss had made it impossible for them to provide good products and service. Rather than disagree with them or join in pointing fingers at others, Tom listened. "I didn't think about it at the time, but that first couple of hours was very cathartic for them. My focus was not on beating anyone up but rather, what can we do to fix this?" The team responded positively to Tom's approach. The next year when they met, the auto company told Tom that they "never saw any business turn around that quickly in one year." As a result, they began giving Tom's company more business, and Tom went on to a distinguished career, eventually becoming one of his company's top executives"--

Book What Makes a Leader Harvard Business Review Classics

Download or read book What Makes a Leader Harvard Business Review Classics written by Daniel Goleman and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to define the ideal leader, many would emphasize traits such as intelligence, toughness, determination, and vision—the qualities traditionally associated with leadership. Often left off the list are softer, more personal qualities—but they are also essential. Although a certain degree of analytical and technical skill is a minimum requirement for success, studies indicate that emotional intelligence may be the key attribute that distinguishes outstanding performers from those who are merely adequate. Psychologist and author Daniel Goleman first brought the term "emotional intelligence" to a wide audience with his 1995 book of the same name, and Goleman first applied the concept to business with a 1998 classic Harvard Business Review article. In his research at nearly 200 large, global companies, Goleman found that truly effective leaders are distinguished by a high degree of emotional intelligence. Without it, a person can have first-class training, an incisive mind, and an endless supply of good ideas, but he or she still won't be a great leader. The chief components of emotional intelligence—self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill—can sound unbusinesslike, but Goleman found direct ties between emotional intelligence and measurable business results. The Harvard Business Review Classics series offers you the opportunity to make seminal Harvard Business Review articles a part of your permanent management library. Each highly readable volume contains a groundbreaking idea that continues to shape best practices and inspire countless managers around the world—and will have a direct impact on you today and for years to come.

Book Mapping Motivation for Leadership

Download or read book Mapping Motivation for Leadership written by James Sale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping Motivation for Leadership, co-written with Jane Thomas, is the fourth of a series of seven books that are all linked to the author’s Motivational Map toolkit. Each book builds on a different aspect of personal, team and organisational development. This is a practical guide to leadership in the 21st century and builds on the ‘4+1’ model outlined in the author's original book Mapping Motivation: Unlocking the Key to Employee Energy and Engagement. There is an increasing body of evidence, that the single most important aspect of being a leader relates to managing emotions effectively, and this management goes way beyond simply ‘understanding’ emotional intelligence; it is in fact a practice and one that is intimately connected with personal development and growth, and with energy. Energy, as Mapping Motivation made clear, is synonymous with motivation. The effective leaders of tomorrow will be those who understand their motivators, who regularly measure their motivators, sustain and replenish and maximise their motivators, and who do the same for their employees. Clearly, there is a link here with the book on engagement, for leaders who do so will engage their employees. However, this book not only covers the motivational side of leadership, but also explores in detail the skill sets necessary in the ‘4+1’ model: thinking skills, action skills, team skills and motivational skills plus that indefinable ‘something’ that is a commitment to personal development, so that we as leaders are not trying to solve today’s problems with yesterday’s training as our only internal resource.

The Emotionally Intelligent Leader brings together three of Goleman's bestselling HBR articles. In "What Makes a Leader?" Goleman explores research that found that truly effective leaders are distinguished by high levels of self-awareness and sharp social skills. In "The Focused Leader," Goleman explains neuroscience research that proves that "being focused" is more than filtering out distractions while concentrating on one thing. Book Employees Emotional Intelligence Motivation Productivity and Organizational Excellence

Download or read book Employees Emotional Intelligence Motivation Productivity and Organizational Excellence written by Gagari Chakrabarti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on emotional intelligence, which has emerged as a factor in superior on-the-job performance and ability to lead an effective life. Based on an emerging country, namely India, the book deviates from traditional approaches by focusing on non-cognitive rather than cognitive skills to explain and predict performance and achievements. It finds that those with strong intrinsic non-cognitive skills, like trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability, initiative and commitment have a better chance of becoming effective leaders with enhanced service-orientation, empathy and conflict management skills –traits desired by any organization striving for efficiency. It also demonstrates that while such imponderable, intrinsic skills matter, they cannot replace discernible psycho-social factors and hence, effective hiring strategies must focus on behavioural competence along with cognitive skills. The book also discusses organizations’ desire to ensure a working environment that is vibrant and positive in an attempt to prevent unconstructive or disruptive factors and to ensure improved performances over time. The book is a valuable resource for corporate personnel, as well as for researchers and practitioners in the field.
