To explore the cognitive processes involved in the decision to exercise, the possible selves (hoped-for and feared) of 93 undergraduate women at the University of Texas at Austin were examined, as were two self-efficacy constructs - scheduling and barrier self-efficacy. Most important hoped-for and feared possible selves related to exercise were categorized and analyzed. Physical and Health categories, followed by Personal and Spiritual, Occupation and Education, and Body Image were most commonly listed for hoped-for selves, while categories of Body Image, Health, and Personal and Spiritual, were most commonly cited for most important feared possible selves. Participants rated the importance, self-efficacy and outcome expectancy of their most important hoped-for and feared selves highly. Participants also felt highly efficacious in overcoming scheduling and barrier obstacles with regard to exercise. Comparisons were made across exercise levels, differentiating between those meeting or not meeting the recommended level of physical activity (Godin, 2011). Multiple logistic regression analyses, controlling for age, were used to test for significant relationships between motivational variables and exercise. Steps taken to achieve the most important possible self (odds ratio [OR] = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.21 - 2.92), steps taken to avoid the most important feared self (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.04 - 2.40), scheduling self-efficacy (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.18 - 2.10), and barrier self-efficacy (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.04 - 2.40) were related to meeting the recommended level of physical activity, compared to not meeting the recommended level. These cross-sectional results suggest that the incorporation of college women's possible selves and other motivational factors into interventions to increase women's physical activity may be a promising area for future research.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: According to The International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC), 25% of worldwide breast cancer cases are due to having a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight or obese (2002). Unfortunately, less than 50% of women participate in physical activity as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American College of Sports Medicine and more than 25% do not participate in any physical activity at all (CDC, 2005). Perceptions of increased personal risk and self-efficacy have been shown to promote exercise participation, and as such, are key elements of protection motivation theory, used as the theoretical framework to guide this study (Courneya & Hellsten, 2001; Dishman & Buckworth, 2001; Petro-Nustas, 2002; Rippetoe & Roger, 1987; Rogers, 1983). The purpose of this study was to determine whether risk and/or health information could motivate a woman to exercise and to explore the accuracy of a woman's perception of breast cancer risk in relationship to her Gail risk score. Women were blocked by Gail risk status into one of two groups, high risk (n = 46) or average risk (n = 50), and then randomly assigned to one of two treatments: control (general written health information) or experimental (specific written health information) to determine which treatment was more effective in motivating women (high risk versus average risk) to exercise. Pearson's chi-square test and analysis of variance were used to assess statistical differences between groups. Multiple regression analysis was used to understand the effects of the independent variables (actual risk, perceived risk, and self-efficacy) on the dependent variable (exercise behavior). Self-efficacy, but not Gail risk made a significant unique contribution to the prediction of exercise behavior, F(2, 80) = 7.15, p = .001. Self-efficacy alone correlated with exercise behavior, accounting for 15.0 % of the variance; perceived susceptibility did not predict exercise behavior or predict above and beyond Gail risk estimates. However, a positive correlation was found between Gail risk and perceived susceptibility. The current study provides support for the potential role of the health care provider in promoting physical activity by providing individuals with tailored instructions to achieve greater levels of self-efficacy.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether verbal encouragement would affect the maximal physiological responses and/or exercise duration of sedentary college aged women. Sedentary college aged women (n=15) performed 2 maxVO2 tests. During one test the Ss were extrinsically motivated through verbal encouragement to exercise as long as possible. The other test was performed with little or no interaction during exercise between the Ss and the researchers. The test sequence (motivation/no motivation or no motivation/motivation) was randomly assigned. Ss performed each test at the same time of day with at least 24 hrs, but no more than 1 wk between tests. A dependent "t" test indicated that verbal encouragement resulted in sig (p.05) higher maxVO2 values (41.6 vs 39.3 mlkgmin-1), HR (193.5 vs 189.9 beats min-1), VE (86.8 vs 78.2 1min-1), and test duration (757.1 vs 699.3 seconds). Verbal encouragement, however, did not result in sig (p.05) higher RER values (1.07 vs 1.04) or RPE values (19.1 vs 18.7). This indicates that a maximal effort was given in both tests. Furthermore, there were no sig (p>.05) diff when the variables during the first test, regardless of treatment, were compared with the second test. It appears that in sedentary college aged women verbal encouragement sig increases maxVO2, HR, VE, and test duration. Therefore, when working with this population in exercise programs and classes, it is important to recognize the influence of extrinsic motivation in the form of verbal encouragement.
