Book excerpt: The purpose of this instrumental case study was to examine the teaching and classroom of a middle school general music teacher through the lens of self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) in order to explore how she encouraged and developed student motivation. Data were generated through interviews, observations, field notes, and documents collected at a suburban middle school in the Midwest. Analysis of the data revealed the middle school general music teacher at this school encouraged and fostered motivation through proactive classroom management, active music making, content that was relevant and engaging to students, and a physically and emotionally safe classroom environment. Based on implications from this study, suggestions were made for ways that music educators can engage and motivate middle school general music students and how the profession as a whole can provide better resources and support for music educators working with young adolescents.

The research question addressed in this dissertation was: What are the effects of instructional technology on motivation, attitudes and behavior of at-risk learners in the middle school general music classroom? The purpose of this study was to determine if the implementation of instructional technology, specifically digital piano keyboards and computers, in the middle school general music program would have a positive effect on the motivation, attitudes and behaviors of at-risk learners. To this end, a study was conducted in which at-risk learners received instruction delivered through a higher concentration of technology. Students completed a pretest and a posttest consisting of the Motivation Achievement Profile, audiation/listening and audiation/reading scales of Level One of the Iowa Tests of Music Literacy and the Middle School Music Attitude Scale. The experimental group received music instruction through a higher concentration of technology while the comparison group participated in an equally desirable music program. Data was analyzed using an analysis of covariance, in which the posttest mean of the experimental group was compared with the posttest mean of the comparison group with the pretest scores used as a covariate. Overall, no statistical significance was found; however, statistical significance was found on 2 of the 22 measures taken. Furthermore, there was a remarkable degree of consistency for the experimental group. Overall, consistency was seen with the experimental group scoring higher on 18 of the 22 measures indicating that perhaps if there had been more students a significant effect might have been seen. Nonetheless, the consistency leads to the conclusion that the treatment had some kind of effect. There is an implication that a positive, although not statistically significant effect on the motivation, attitudes and behaviors of at-risk learners occurred.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore whether or not a connection exists between students' school contexts and their academic and social choices by listening to the voices of first year middle school students. The intent of this study was to provide teachers with a way to reconceptualize adolescents as learners. Research suggests that there are two distinct approaches to the study of motivation. Some researchers believe that motivation can be externally enacted through exams, assessments, and other accountability measures. Other researchers believe that motivation is-internally generated through the relationships students build, through their beliefs about learning, and through their past successes and failures. Both approaches dominate discussions on student motivation and achievement. This work represented students' voices in order to explore which approach to motivation led to a better understanding of students' reactions to middle school that, in turn, will allow teachers to create instructional contexts that encourage genuine engagement and academic achievement. The study accomplished its purpose by surveying, interviewing, and observing students in their first year of middle school and analyzing what they said influenced their decisions to engage in or to disengage from school learning experiences. Data analysis identified themes that ran through the students' responses. By highlighting the voices of young adolescents, this study found that external factors influence internal motivation to achieve but cannot alone sustain it. Young adolescents wanted to be academically challenged by their teachers, but they also needed their coursework to be relevant to their immediate interests and needs. Being told that school was a preparation for some distant future was not a sufficient reason to work diligently. Students in this study relied heavily on their network of friends and family as they adjusted to their new school contexts, and teachers also influenced motivation through their teaching practices, interactions with students, and expectations for student success or failure.
