Book The Mother s Legacy in Early Modern England

Download or read book The Mother s Legacy in Early Modern England written by Ms Jennifer Heller and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using printed and manuscript texts composed between 1575 and 1672, Jennifer Heller defines the genre of the mother's legacy as a distinct branch of the advice tradition in early modern England that takes the form of a dying mother's pious counsel to her children. Reading these texts in light of specific cultural contexts, social trends, and historical events, Heller explores how legacy writers used the genre to secure personal and family status, to shape their children's beliefs and behaviors, and to intervene in the period's tumultuous religious and political debates. The author's attention to the fine details of the period's religious and political swings, drawn from sources such as royal proclamations, sermons, and first-hand accounts of book-burnings, creates a fuller context for her analysis of the legacies. Similarly, Heller explains the appeal of the genre by connecting it to social factors including mortality rates and inheritance practices. Analyses of related genres, such as conduct books and fathers' legacies, highlight the unique features and functions of mothers' legacies. Heller also attends to the personal side of the genre, demonstrating that a writer's education, marriages, children, and turns of fortune affect her work within the genre.

Book Mother and Son

Download or read book Mother and Son written by Emerson Eggerichs and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times best-selling author of Love & Respect comes the definitive book for mothers and sons. Love is important but it is respect that is the key to your son's heart. As Emerson Eggerichs transformed millions of marital relationships with a biblical understanding of love and respect, he now turns these principles to one of the most important relationships of all, a mother and her son. The idea of moms respecting their sons may sound alien to some, but it seems to ignite curiosity across the board. It is easy to relate to the need for all of us to feel a mother's love, but is that the same thing as respect? Even for young boys, the effect of respect is nothing short of astounding when applied properly. Moms yearn to learn anything that better helps them with their sons. After all, they love their boys, but many find them more difficult to parent than their girls, especially from age four and up. What makes this all the more urgent is that moms are coaching fathers to love their daughters, but no one has said boo to moms on specific ways to show respect to their sons, at least not in a way that is applicable and fully explained. All realize that little girls need daddy's love, but who is strongly promoting the truth that little boys (and big ones) need Mom's respect? No wonder mothers feel left in the dark on this topic. Mother & Son is also available in Spanish, Madre e hijo.

Book Strong Mothers Strong Sons

Download or read book Strong Mothers Strong Sons written by Meg Meeker and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely and empowering book featuring “solid, practical advice for women on how to properly nurture their sons” (Kirkus Reviews). From the moment a mother holds her newborn son, his eyes tell her that she is his world. But often, as he grows up, the boy who needs her simultaneously pushes her away. Calling upon thirty years of experience as a pediatrician, Meg Meeker, M.D., a highly sought after national speaker, assistant professor of clinical medicine, and mother of four, shares the secrets that every mother needs to know in order to strengthen—or rebuild—her relationship with her son. Boys today face unique challenges and pressures, and the burden on mothers to guide their boys through them can feel overwhelming. This empowering book offers a road map to help mothers find the strength and confidence to raise extraordinary sons by providing encouragement, education, and practical advice about • the need for mothers to exercise courage and be bolder and more confident about advising and directing their boys • the crucial role mothers play in expressing love to sons in healthy ways so they learn to respect and appreciate women as they grow up • the importance of teaching sons about the values of hard work, community service, and a well-developed inner life • the natural traps mothers of boys often fall into—and how to avoid them • the need for a mother to heal her own wounds with the men in her life so she can raise her son without baggage and limitations • the best ways to survive the moments when the going gets tough and a mom’s natural ways of communicating—talking, analyzing, exploring—only fuel the fire When a mother holds her baby boy for the first time, she also instinctively knows something else: If she does her job right and raises her son with self-esteem, support, and wisdom, he will become the man she knows he was meant to be.

Book Counsel to a Mother on the Care and Rearing of Her Children

Download or read book Counsel to a Mother on the Care and Rearing of Her Children written by Pye Henry Chavasse and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. THE CIRCULATION of my four Books is very large : Forty-seven thousand copies of Advice to a Wife, forty-seven thousand copies of Advice to a Mother, ten thousand copies (including the present edition) of Counsel to a Mother, and two thousand copies (first edition) of Aphorisms for Parents have already been published -- making an aggregate of my four books, and of the English Editions alone, of upwards of 100,000 copies. The aggregate sale for the one year -- the last -- amounts to about 15,000 copies -- equivalent, in one twelve-months, to fifteen ordinary editions, and still the sale rapidly increases. I again wish to call my reader's particular attention to the milk-water-salt-and-sugar food (page 19), as one of the best -- if not the very best -- substitutes either for a mother's or for a wet-nurse's milk. Some of the finest children I have ever seen have been brought up upon it -- and upon it alone -- from their birth until they have been seven or nine months old; until, indeed, they have begun to cut their teeth; I mean, of course, when the mothers themselves were totally unfit -- as, unfortunately they frequently were, and are -- to suckle their own babes. If this food be used -- it should be used in its integrity, and with all the precautions and directions as advised in the text. It more resembles a mother's own milk than any other food I am acquainted with : hence the secret of its great Success. I have been frequently asked by patients as to the desirability, or otherwise, of their substituting Condensed Milk for new milk for their children. I have, in this edition, replied to such inquiries. Much additional matter has been added to this edition; among the rest a chapter "On Costive Bowels" (page 239) -- a subject demanding deep consideration, as the constant giving to a child, and, indeed, to everyone else, aperient medicine is pregnant with danger, and alike subversive of comfort, of comeliness, of health, of strength, and happiness, and is a bungling, blundering, and barbarous method of opening the bowels of a child who is habitually costive. (See, likewise, page 56.) The majority of cases of habitual costiveness is due to the administration of aperients; if a child never does take an aperient, he, as a rule, never requires one -- his bowels not being costive -- of this I am quite convinced. The frequent giving a costive child aperients is a grievous ill: it predisposes him to cold; it weakens his digestion; it knocks the strength out of him; it confirms his costiveness; it prepares the way for many and serious diseases. High time it is that attention was called to the subject, and that means were used to abate the wide-spread evil, and thus to stay "the slaughter of the innocents." Having devoted much labour in preparing this third edition, I flatter myself that I have greatly improved it. I resign it into the hands of my fair readers and of my numerous friends and patients -- assuring them that I have lost no opportunity, and have spared neither time nor pains to make this book still more worthy of their approval and of their acceptance. In conclusion: I wish to impress the following facts -- for they are facts -- deeply into my reader's mind: Many of the diseases, and a large percentage of the deaths of children, are preventable; but, then, vigilance, discipline, and good management must rule in the nursery and in the household generally. These pages are intended to help a mother in her arduous undertakings, and to smooth her path through difficulties, dangers, and perplexities. "Prosper Thou the works of our hands upon us, O prosper Thou our handy-work." --PYE HENRY CHAVASSE.
