Book Woman Defined Motherhood

Download or read book Woman Defined Motherhood written by Jane Price Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, here is an enlightening and empowering book that defines motherhood from a feminist perspective and then explores the implications of that definition. Feminist authors examine some of women’s full, rich, and varied thoughts and experiences about motherhood. In contrast to the too often accepted male notions of what constitutes a “good’mother or a “normal” family, this important book presents a comprehensive and balanced view of motherhood--as women have observed and experienced it. The major issues surrounding motherhood today are closely examined--the pervasive problem of mother-blaming and mother-hating and solutions to overcome it; ageism, sexism, and motherhood; relationships between mothers and daughters; relationships between stepmothers and stepchildren; motherhood and sex roles within the family; adoption; infertility; and childlessness. Special insight is also provided into the concerns of women who are mothers--lesbians, women of color, mothers of biracial children, and adoptive mothers of children from different cultures. Woman-Defined Motherhood is must reading for women, including both mothers and daughters, for therapists and other professionals supporting women, and for anyone interested in mothering.

  • ISBN : 0062662961
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Like a Mother written by Angela Garbes and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A candid, feminist, and personal deep dive into the science and culture of pregnancy and motherhood Like most first-time mothers, Angela Garbes was filled with questions when she became pregnant. What exactly is a placenta and how does it function? How does a body go into labor? Why is breast best? Is wine totally off-limits? But as she soon discovered, it’s not easy to find satisfying answers. Your obstetrician will cautiously quote statistics; online sources will scare you with conflicting and often inaccurate data; and even the most trusted books will offer information with a heavy dose of judgment. To educate herself, the food and culture writer embarked on an intensive journey of exploration, diving into the scientific mysteries and cultural attitudes that surround motherhood to find answers to questions that had only previously been given in the form of advice about what women ought to do—rather than allowing them the freedom to choose the right path for themselves. In Like a Mother, Garbes offers a rigorously researched and compelling look at the physiology, biology, and psychology of pregnancy and motherhood, informed by in-depth reportage and personal experience. With the curiosity of a journalist, the perspective of a feminist, and the intimacy and urgency of a mother, she explores the emerging science behind the pressing questions women have about everything from miscarriage to complicated labors to postpartum changes. The result is a visceral, full-frontal look at what’s really happening during those nine life-altering months, and why women deserve access to better care, support, and information. Infused with humor and born out of awe, appreciation, and understanding of the female body and its strength, Like a Mother debunks common myths and dated assumptions, offering guidance and camaraderie to women navigating one of the biggest and most profound changes in their lives.

Book Naked Motherhood

Download or read book Naked Motherhood written by Wendy LeBlanc and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not another book on how to have the perfect pregnancy, be the perfect mother or bring up the perfect child. This is real. Within the paid working world it is illegal to employ anyone in a job which demands they be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No other job requires that an employee only ever sleep for two or three hours at any one time and a total of no more than five or six hours in any one day. When a woman is employed in the workforce she may enjoy morning and afternoon tea breaks, lunch breaks, four weeks per year holiday, sick leave, superannuation and - oh yes - a wage. Mothers get none of these benefits and bear all the costs and responsibilities. A mother herself and an academic, Wendy LeBlanc wondered how other women cope with the extraordinary transformation that takes place when a woman becomes a mother. In her pre-mother life, Wendy had been a highly successful money market commodities broker and one of the first women to break through the glass ceiling in her profession. Needless to say, when she became a mother, the changes to her body, her priorities and her emotions, as well as the sudden drop in her status and shift in her lifestyle, came as mind-blowing shock. And it was left pretty much to Wendy alone (except for her adorable, screaming, pooing, baby Daniel) to figure out how to recover from it. Initially out of curiosity, Wendy surveyed a diverse group of women and asked about the effect pregnancy and motherhood had on them and how it lived up to their expectations. The surveys, many accompanied with letters detailing their most personal experiences, led to forums in which women, sometimes women who'd known each other for years, poured out stories they'd never shared before. These are the words and the voices that have inspired this book. Above all, what Wendy has found in her investigation is a wealth of anecdotal and statistical evidence that motherhood has been so neglected and devalued by our economic, social and political constructs, that it has become a virtual wilderness. Hard evidence that we live in a world that values profit above people and balancing the budget above the health and welfare of our children. Put plainly, working conditions and social support for mothers suck. But it will be our kids who ultimately pay the price. We are still waiting for the revolution which will recognise and applaud the invaluable contribution made by mothers; in the meantime they desperately need useful strategies for coping in a society which ignores the fact that they are overworked, underacknowledged, scarcely supported and often isolated and confused. Naked Motherhood shines a torch forward, encouraging mothers to find strength, pride and unity in the sharing of their stories, their truths. Only then, will the power of their collective voice be heard. According to Wendy, these are the questions women today should be asking: * Why is motherhood a physical, emotional and mental shock for most women? * Why is postnatal depression termed a 'disorder' when it is estimated that 88% of new mothers suffer from it? Surely, it's becoming an alarming norm? * Why is mothering not a respected profession, seen to be contributing directly to the social health of a community? * Why are women only equal when they play by male rules; why is paid employment recognised by our economic and political constructs as the only relevant form of employment? * Why are our children's needs such a weak political issue? * Why are so many women rejecting traditional full-time mothering in favour of paid work? * Why does society not support and recognise the roles of mothers on the one hand but blame them if their children don't turn out to be model citizens on the other? * How has the feminist movement let mothers down? * What is our society in danger of losing by its persistent refusal to acknowledge the importance of human relationships? * What can women do to cope with the abo

Book excerpt: "Deciding yes or not to motherhood can be fraught with confusion, pain, and loneliness. Many a woman is undecided about arguably the most important life-defining decision she'll make in her lifetime. With the 'Motherhood -- Is it for me?' program, the authors of this book, both dedicated and seasoned psychotherapists, created a process that has helped countless women over the last 25 years. Finally available in print, this program is the perfect resource for closely examining ambivalence around this crucial life choice. Through precise steps, readers are guided on their own personal journeys toward deeper understanding and learn what they really want. The process even allows a woman who is experiencing extremely painful immobilization to find her way through to her true desire. The authors know from their professional experience that an analytical pros-and-cons approach often fails to successfully answer this most personal question. Interspersed throughout this book are twenty diverse stories of women who made conscious choices, half deciding yes and half deciding no. Their stories -- and sometimes advice -- create a valuable community that provides support to every reader, breaking the isolation they may feel."--Book cover.

Book Perfect Madness

Download or read book Perfect Madness written by Judith Warner and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is wrong with this picture? That's the question Judith Warner asks after taking a good, hard look at the world of modern motherhood--at anxious women at work and at home and in bed with unhappy husbands. When Warner had her first child, she was living in Paris, where parents routinely left their children home with state-subsidized nannies. When she returned to the States, she was stunned by the cultural differences she found toward motherhood. None of the mothers she met seemed happy: Instead, they worried about the possibility of not having the perfect child, panicking as each developmental benchmark approached. Combining close readings of mainstream magazines, TV shows, and pop culture with a thorough command of dominant ideas in recent psychological, social, and economic theory, this book addresses our cultural assumptions, and examines the forces that have shaped them.
