Book excerpt: Marrying the sharp insights of Jenny Offill with the dark humor of Maria Semple, Motherest is an inventive and moving coming-of-age novel that captures the pain of fractured family life, the heat of new love, and the particular magic of the female friendship -- all through the lens of a fraying daughter-mother bond. It's the early 1990s, and Agnes is running out of people she can count on. A new college student, she is caught between the broken home she leaves behind and the wilderness of campus life. What she needs most is her mother, who has seemingly disappeared, and her brother, who left the family tragically a few years prior. As Agnes falls into new romance, mines female friendships for intimacy, and struggles to find her footing, she writes letters to her mother, both to conjure a closeness they never had and to try to translate her experiences to herself. When she finds out she is pregnant, Agnes begins to contend with what it means to be a mother and, in some ways, what it means to be your own mother./DIV

Book MOTHER WEST WIND WHY STORIES 16 Why Stories from Mother West Wind

Download or read book MOTHER WEST WIND WHY STORIES 16 Why Stories from Mother West Wind written by Thornton W. (Waldo) Burgess and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thornton W. Burgess was a bird-watching, berry-picking student of nature, who took up writing children's stores including those collected in Old Mother West Wind "Why" Stories which were published in 1920. Grandfather Frog is very old and very wise, and he knows all about the days when the world was young. When he is feeling just right, he dearly loves to tell about those long-ago days. "Chug-a-rum!" says Grandfather Frog. And then he told why Peter Rabbit -- and all rabbits -- cannot bend their wrists. In fact, he told a thousand stories, because that's what Grandfather Frog was meant to do. Stories of Rabbits, Chipmunks, Possums, Foxes and more forest animals. Grandfather Frog knows the important stuff about everybody who lives around the meadow. Burgess sets his tales at a time "when the world was young," back when Peter Rabbit's "great-great-ever-so-great grandfather" was a young hopper, and Old Mother Nature still had some work to do on basic designs. She sees that a duck needs webbed feet to swim, and a prairie dog needs a burrow designed to keep dry. Burgess's animals are proud of their unique features and abilities, but the real voice of enthusiasm is the author's own, sharing the delights he found in the woods of New England. Typical of the book's charm is the story of where "Dippy the loon got the name of being crazy." The bird is smarter than he looks -- and that's how Dippy always gets the last laugh. 10% of the profit from the sale of the book will be donated to charities. =================================== Thornton W. (Waldo) Burgess (1874-1965), American author, naturalist and conservationist, wrote popular children's stories including the Old Mother West Wind series (1910). He would go on to write more than 100 books and thousands of short-stories during his lifetime. Thornton Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, "Bedtime Stories". He was sometimes known as the Bedtime Story-Man. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column. =================================== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Mother West Wind, why stories, childrens stories, fables, folklore, animal stories, forest stories, children’s book, Striped Chipmunk, Stripes, Peter Rabbit, rabbit Hands, Unc' Billy Possum, Play Dead, Reddy Fox, Red clothes, Jimmy Skunk, Never Hurries, Sammy Jay, Fine Coat, Jerry Muskrat, House In The Water, Old Man Coyote, Miner The Mole, Live Under Ground, Mr. Snake, Cannot Wink, Bobby Coon, Rings On His Tail, Black Head, Buzzard Family, Buster Bear, Appears To Have No Tail, Flitter The Bat, Flies At Night, Spotty The Turtle, Carries His House, Paddy The Beaver, Broad Tail, Forest Feast, Grandfather Frog, stick out his Tongue, Old King Bear, Wish, Wish to fly, Thornton W Burgess,

Book Learning Keeping and Using Language

Download or read book Learning Keeping and Using Language written by M.A.K. Halliday and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers from the Eight World Congress of Applied Linguistics held in Sydney in 1987. Volume I starts off with an overview of the field by G. Richard Tucker in which he identifies two areas: innovative language education and language education policy. The overal focus of the papers to follow focus on the individual language learner, how that individual, in given contexts or in interaction with specific others, develops a command of a first language, of two or more first languages, or of a second language, in home and in classroom settings. At the same time, cutting across these variables, there is a gradual shifting of attention from investigations of the language learning process to proposals for language teaching curricula and syllabuses.

Book Begin Again Believe Again

Download or read book Begin Again Believe Again written by Sharon A. Hersh and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our hearts as women were made by God for relationships. Why is it, then, that the thing we most deeply desire—relationships—becomes the source of so much pain? Difficult marriages, the loneliness of being single, problem children, abusive employers, fractured friendships...life's realities are often very different from the dreams we dreamed for ourselves as girls. How do we live with this beautiful ache for relationships in a world that doesn't always work? When we've been betrayed, how do we trust again? When we've been disappointed, how do we hope again? When we've been terribly hurt, how do we love again? In this honest, intimate, and transformative book, counselor Sharon Hersh helps you gain a new, truly biblical perspective on relationships that can help you endure the heartaches and still come up living wholeheartedly, loving with abandon, and daring to hope and believe. The stories of the women in this book, including that of the author, are signposts that point you beyond the sometimes devastating problems of life to the deep, rich reason and root of all relationships, both good and bad: God's desire for relationship with you.In Sharon's words, “Relationships are not the destination—they are the path to something more.”
