Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this heartfelt memoir, April goes into great detail about the physical, psychological, and sexual abuse she and her young siblings suffered at the hands of their father. At the age of three, April was tortured, beaten, belittled, and abused by her alcoholic, and drug addicted father: a father who beat, and played mind games-games that left her fearing for her life. She learned how to survive by silence and silence alone. April slept in a corner in her bedroom, her clothes raunchy with urine. April did everything she could to be a good girl so her father would love her, but all she got in return was a beating to reassure her father she would remain silent and not speak a word to anyone. No other family member knew of the abuse April was suffering nor did they care. April had no one to turn to; all she had was her prayers, prayers that her father would fi nd her a good child and love her. This memoir will walk you through each struggle as April fi ghts for love and happiness and survival. This memoir speaks the truth about child abuse-and the choices we are all faced in order to survive.

Book God Grace and Grandpa

Download or read book God Grace and Grandpa written by Charles J. Grams and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the true story of a boy who grows up with a great and wonderful man, the love of Christ, and the harsh journey he takes to understanding grace. The desire to follow in his grandfather's footsteps is so overpowering that nothing else matters. The older the boy becomes, the harder to enjoy life outside of his grandfather's presence becomes. The turmoil of his parents and schoolmates causes great distress and pain throughout the rest of his life. The desire to be a friend to everyone and receive the love of others is tragically destroyed by the harshness of children and adults that don't know the love of Christ or care for other's emotions. The daily grind of mean children as well as schoolteachers causes this child to question who he is and if anyone can love him other than his grandfather. A true desire to understand God and understand those around him becomes too heavy, and the emotional distress that this causes nearly puts an end to this young life. Only the love of Jesus and his grandfather keeps him on the correct path of life. Fighting through the harder years of teenage life, trying to prove his worth to his father, dealing with a religious mother and the hatred of others--this story is how a young man becomes an exceptional athlete as well as a cocky womanizer. He hardens himself to those that have hurt him through the years, including his own family. The desire for his father to accept him becomes a lost cause, and he separates himself from his religious mother to go his own way. He never loses his love for his grandfather and the faith he has in God. There are harsh and emotional situations in this book. It may be hard to understand how people can be so cruel to those who want nothing more than to love and be a part of their life. This book will show you that even though you may not realize it, the Lord is with you even in times of distress. We all look for the answers in life and why we go through the things we do. This shows us that no matter what you go through there is one who is always with you and will help you get through anything. I truly believe you will enjoy this book and believe and pray the message is loud and clear. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Book Mommy was Grandpa a Nazi

Download or read book Mommy was Grandpa a Nazi written by Elisabeth Falcone and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time seems to stand still when we share a meal with family and friends or with strangers. The concept that food releases a chemical reaction enhancing our capacity for tolerance and understanding is a common thread in the stories of this book. They take us from WWII Germany to present-day Europe and America . When the author's daughter, Angie, comes home from school and asks, "Mommy, was grandpa a Nazi?", the author wants to find who wants to know and meets with Angie's teacher, Ruth Singer, who is teaching about the Holocaust. They have much in common, and their love of cooking leads to a lifelong friendship. "Gita's Diary" is about a Polish refugee whose culinary skills help the author's grandmother and her children to survive while the grandfather is in a Nazi labor camp. In "Gentiles Only", Ruth Singer discovers that in the 1950's Jews are not welcome in some Miami Beach hotels. "Forbidden Love" is about Silke, a Norwegian immigrant, who falls in love with Julian, a Black man. She learns that in the 1970's racially mixed couples are taboo in America . They separate, but a cousin's magic cooking reunites them. Paul, an American art student in "Aix Marks the Spot", abandons his prejudice against the Irish when a young Irish pastry chef serves him a delicious dessert. Soon after the 9/11 attack, Claudia, a Catholic Latina, meets Azir, a Muslim, on a cruise ship. In "Plain Couscous" they set aside their religious differences to enjoy each other and Claudia's picnic. "Mutti's Story" and "Vati's Story" helped Angie to understand her grandparents' experiences during WWII. The stories' recipes are listed at the end of the chapter. Complete recipes are in the Appendix.

This timely story of battle-scarred Afghanistan delivers a masterful portrait of war, love, and friendship. With the horrors of war bearing down on them, Aman and his mother are barely surviving in an Afghan cave, and staying there any longer will end horribly. The only comfort Aman has is Shadow, the loyal spaniel that shows up from places unknown, it seems, just when Aman needs him most. Aman, his mother, and Shadow finally leave the destroyed cave in hopes of escaping to England, but are held at a checkpoint, and Shadow runs away after being shot at by the police. Aman and his mother escape--without Shadow. Aman is heart-broken. Just as they are getting settled as free citizens in England, they are imprisoned in a camp with locked doors and a barbed wire fence. Their only hope is Aman's classmate Matt, his grandpa, and the dream of finding his lost dog. After all, you never lose your shadow.

Book Tears of the Desert

Download or read book Tears of the Desert written by Halima Bashir and published by One World. This book was released on 2008-09-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Halima Bashir’s] mesmerizing tale of against-all-odds endurance is a piercing lament—and a clear-eyed call to action.”—Vogue “This memoir helps keep the Darfur tragedy open as a wound not yet healed.”—Elie Wiesel, author of Night Born into the Zaghawa tribe in the Sudanese desert, Halima Bashir received a good education away from her rural surroundings (thanks to her doting, politically astute father) and at twenty-four became her village’s first formal doctor. Yet not even Bashir’s degree could protect her from the encroaching conflict that would consume her homeland. Janjaweed Arab militias savagely assaulted the Zaghawa, often with the backing of the Sudanese military. Then, in early 2004, the Janjaweed attacked Bashir’s village and surrounding areas, raping forty-two schoolgirls and their teachers. Bashir, who treated the traumatized victims, some as young as eight years old, could no longer remain quiet. But breaking her silence ignited a horrifying turn of events. Raw and riveting, Tears of the Desert is the first memoir ever written by a woman caught up in the war in Darfur. It is a survivor’s tale of a conflicted country, a resilient people, and an uncompromising spirit. Praise for Tears of the Desert “This is a brave book. And a valuable one. Halima’s story of the atrocities and immeasurable losses she has endured must be told.”—Mia Farrow, actor and advocate “Vivid, poignant and brutally candid . . . Tears of the Desert is that rarest of literary endeavors, not just a book you read but a book you experience.”—The Washington Post Book World “An extraordinary memoir . . . Halima Bashir’s bravery contrasts with the world’s fecklessness and failures.”—Nicholas D. Kristof, The New York Times “Searing . . . Tears of the Desert gives voice to the unspeakable.”—USA Today “Powerful, harrowing and brave.”—The Economist “A luminous tale of growing up in rural Darfur . . . a wonderful and moving African memoir.”—The New York Review of Books
