Book excerpt: "This is a marvellous contribution by Chris Owen to the understanding of the role the Western Australian police force played in the colonial expansion into the Kimberley district of Western Australia."--Senator Patrick Dodson, Yawuru Elder ***Chris Owen provides a compelling account of policing in the Kimberley district from 1882, when police were established in the district, until 1905 when Dr. Walter Roth's controversial Royal Commission into the treatment of Aboriginal people was released. Owen's achievement is to take elements of all the pre-existing historiography and test them against a rigorous archival investigation. In doing so, a fuller understanding of the complex social, economic, and political changes occurring in Western Australia during the period are exposed. The policing of Aboriginal people changed from one of protection under law to one of punishment and control. The subsequent violence of colonial settlement and the associated policing and criminal justice system that developed, often of questionable legality, was what Royal Commissioner Roth termed a 'brutal and outrageous state of affairs.' Every Mother's Son is Guilty is a significant contribution to Australian and colonial criminal justice history. Subject: History, Aboriginal Studies, Criminal Justice, policing]
Download or read book Her Australian Cattle Baron written by Margaret Way and published by Lyrical Press. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on the Australian Outback is a high-stakes game—and love must be strong to survive—in this modern-day romance from the USA Today–bestselling author. Royston Stirling has all the strength, money, and power that his infamous father wielded over the family cattle station deep in the dusty bush of Australia’s Channel Country. But from the moment she sees him, Amelia Boyd knows Royce struggles to be a better man. His tense energy attracts her, fueling the spell of remote, manor-like Kooralya and its lush grounds of gardenia and roses—even as she recognizes that the wedding bringing their families together is a terrible mistake. Amelia knows her sister has snared Royce’s brother more out of greed than passion. But she can’t abandon her, no matter how conniving she seems. And with the groom besotted with Amelia even as he prepares to walk down the aisle, the ill-fated match stirs up nightmares of the past. Amelia might almost forgive Royce’s suspicions. But the arrogance of a wounded man is a powerful force, one Amelia knows too well. And as the desire brewing between Royce and Amelia grows irresistible, the distrust, heartache, and family secrets seething beneath the surface are bound to burst forth . . . Praise for the writing of Margaret Way “If you’ve never read Margaret Way before, you’re in for a treat!” —Diana Palmer, New York Times–bestselling author “Way combines romance with a decades-old mystery and the dazzling beauty of the Australian outback.” —Publishers Weekly
Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Australian Cattle Dogs written by Ross D. Clark and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Australian Cattle Dogs) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Download or read book Kirrama written by Barbara Gunn and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kirrama, Life on an Australian Cattle Station is real and as far removed from comfort and safety as anything you could find in the best fiction adventure novels. It is the true-life story of an average Texas ranching family who took a giant step across the boundary that lies between normal to extra-ordinary adventure and sacrifice. The Gunn family migrated from a small two-thousand acre Central Texas ranch in Williamson County, Texas, to a beautiful one hundred and six thousand acre (166 sq. mile) cattle station (ranch) in Queensland, Australia. The family in this book is living proof of the true strength and courage we all possess when faced with a challenge. How do we learn to live without modern comforts and the advanced technology that has become very much a part of our everyday existence? Little did we realize at the beginning of our journey that we had seen the last of automatic washers, dryers, hot water heaters and electricity for many years. Now, we would experience the use of concrete rub boards graduating to gas powered wringer type washers. The children would be home schooled. Outpost radio was the only means of communication with the outside world, as well as the Royal Flying Doctor Service for verbal diagnosis and treatment of all medical conditions. There was no landing strip on this property located on a rough, remote mountain range, therefore, the doctor could only be used to instruct in a verbal capacity. Kirrama (aboriginal meaning for lots of water) will take you through camping experiences on rivers infested with saltwater crocodiles, deadly snakes, sharks, wild hogs, and dingoes. You will enjoy the wild life of the graceful yet awkward looking kangaroos, curious emus, and beautiful colored parrots as well as the sad times of having to prepare a loved one for burial, while experiencing aboriginal life in the Great Outback of The Land Down Under. Sold on Reality? Time Magazine September 27, 2001, reported Reality TV such as Survivor II, "The Australian Outback," was watched by hundreds of millions of people in more than forty countries by people fascinated with excitement, adventure, and reality far removed from the everyday routine of their lives. Reality none the less, being experienced by ordinary people like themselves, it creates an awakening within them that each and everyone of us possess; the basic human as well as spiritual strength to survive in situations outside the safety and comforts of our own normal lives. Oprah's last show in Australia was a tremendous success. People are in awe of the huge cattle stations, the Great Barrier Reef, the unusual animals, and the whole of Australia in general. The stories in Kirrama will take you from our long forty-two hour travel time from Austin, Texas, U.S.A., to Cairns, Queensland, Australia; including the feelings and trials of moving to a new country on to the many moves to various cattle stations in very remote outback areas and finally to our new home with many more adventures and trials. People Weekly magazine in their February 5, 2001, addition covered the complete story of the arrival of the Survivor II crew to Goshen, which was the adjoining station to Kirrma Station. The faux Stone Age Tribal Council was actually built on the rocky edge above the Herbert River where Blenco Falls cascades for 500 feet into the Herbert River Gorge on Kirrama Station. Kirrama was purchased by the Gunn family from Doug and Ruth Farquhar, the Australian family who then purchased Goshen Station. Much of Kirrama is written about this area, as well as the very remote cattle stations in the Cape York Peninsula.

Download or read book On Animals written by David L. Clough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an authoritative and comprehensive survey of human practice in relation to other animals, together with a Christian ethical analysis building on the theological account of animals which David Clough developed in On Animals Volume I: Systematic Theology (2012). It argues that a Christian understanding of other animals has radical implications for their treatment by humans, with the human use and abuse of non-human animals for food the most urgent immediate priority. Following an introduction examining the task of theological ethics in relation to non-human animals and the way it relates to other accounts of animal ethics, this book surveys and assess the use humans make of other animals for food, for clothing, for labour, as research subjects, for sport and entertainment, as pets or companions, and human impacts on wild animals. The result is both a state-of-the-art account of what humans are doing to other animals, and a persuasive argument that Christians in particular have strong faith-based reasons to acknowledge the significance of the issues raised and change their practice in response.

Download or read book White Mother to a Dark Race written by Margaret D. Jacobs and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, indigenous communities in the United States and Australia suffered a common experience at the hands of state authorities: the removal of their children to institutions in the name of assimilating American Indians and protecting Aboriginal people. Although officially characterized as benevolent, these government policies often inflicted great trauma on indigenous families and ultimately served the settler nations? larger goals of consolidating control over indigenous peoples and their lands. White Mother to a Dark Racetakes the study of indigenous education and acculturation in new directions in its examination of the key roles white women played in these policies of indigenous child-removal. Government officials, missionaries, and reformers justified the removal of indigenous children in particularly gendered ways by focusing on the supposed deficiencies of indigenous mothers, the alleged barbarity of indigenous men, and the lack of a patriarchal nuclear family. Often they deemed white women the most appropriate agents to carry out these child-removal policies. Inspired by the maternalist movement of the era, many white women were eager to serve as surrogate mothers to indigenous children and maneuvered to influence public policy affecting indigenous people. Although some white women developed caring relationships with indigenous children and others became critical of government policies, many became hopelessly ensnared in this insidious colonial policy.
