Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brief Interview With Mother Murphy, Himself Q. How did you come up with the idea for Mother Murphy's Law? Mother Murphy: I spend a lot of time with my children, and it seems that something is always going wrong. I used to think I was a klutzy daddy...then it dawned on me: 1. When I was a kid, everything my parents did was wrong. 2. Now that I'm a parent, everything I do is wrong. Q. What does Mother Murphy's Law explain? Mother Murphy: The book is pretty much a catalog of things that can go wrong as you have and raise kids. For example: If most of the baby shower gifts you receive are blue, your baby will be a girl. Your baby's diaper is wet moments after you've changed her into a clean one...and leakproof diapers aren't. your toddler knocks on your bedroom door the moment you're about to have sex...or barges in unannounced at the peak of passion. Any food that's good for your child is "yukky"...and any food that's loaded with sugar, salt and fat is "yummy." Anything you say or do when you're with your teenager in public will embarrass him.

Tony knows he’s risking his military career when he approaches Adam in front of his SEAL teammates. And Adam, nursing a broken heart, has no interest in a relationship. Still, neither man can deny their instant attraction. Tony didn’t become a SEAL by accepting rejection, and his pursuit of Adam leads to one unforgettable night. But the next morning, Tony is ordered to ship out to Afghanistan with SEAL Team Sixteen, and he’s forced to leave Adam with too much unsaid. As Tony enters a dangerous war zone, Adam has to choose between keeping the home fires burning, or taking a blowtorch, igniting the hope of a new relationship with a perfect-for-him man, and burning it all to the ground. When Tony is injured, the two men must face their feelings for each other. With a little help from some friends—Tony’s SEAL teammates of Izzy, Jenk, Lopez, and Gillman, and Adam’s longtime frenemy, Troubleshooters operative Sam Starrett—they must decide if what they’ve found together is worth risking even more than their hearts. Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestselling novel Fish in a Tree! Carley uses humor and street smarts to keep her emotional walls high and thick. But the day she becomes a foster child, and moves in with the Murphys, she's blindsided. This loving, bustling family shows Carley the stable family life she never thought existed, and she feels like an alien in their cookie-cutter-perfect household. Despite her resistance, the Murphys eventually show her what it feels like to belong--until her mother wants her back and Carley has to decide where and how to live. She's not really a Murphy, but the gifts they've given her have opened up a new future. "Hunt's writing is fearless and One For The Murphys is a story that is at once compassionate, thought-provoking and beautifully told. From the first page, I was drawn into Carley's story. She is a character not to be missed or forgotten." —Jacqueline Woodson, National Book Award-winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming Winner of the Tassy Walden Award for New Voice in Children's Literature

Book Charlie Murphy

Download or read book Charlie Murphy written by Jason Cannon and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-06 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2023 SABR Larry Ritter Book Award Finalist for the 2022 CASEY Award You don't know the history of the Chicago Cubs until you know the story of Charles Webb Murphy, the ebullient and mercurial owner of this historic franchise from 1905 through 1914. Originally a sportswriter in Cincinnati, he joined the New York Giants front office as a press agent--the game's first--in 1905. That season, hearing the Cubs were for sale, he secured a loan from Charles Taft, the older half-brother of the future president of the United States, to buy a majority share and become the team's new owner. In his second full season, the Cubs won their first World Series. They won again in 1908, but soon thereafter Murphy's unconventional style invited ill will from the owners, his own players, and the press, even while leading the team through their most successful period in team history. In Charlie Murphy: The Iconoclastic Showman behind the Chicago Cubs, Jason Cannon explores Murphy's life both on and off the field, painting a picture of his meteoric rise and precipitous downfall. Readers will get to know the real Murphy, not the simplified caricature created by his contemporaries that has too frequently been perpetuated through the years, but the whirling dervish who sent the sport of baseball spinning and elevated Chicago to the center of the baseball universe. Cannon recounts Murphy's rise from the son of Irish immigrants to sports reporter to Cubs president, charting his legacy as one of the most important but overlooked figures in the National League's long history. Cannon explores how Murphy's difficult teenage years shaped his love for baseball; his relationship with the Tafts, one of America's early twentieth-century dynastic families; his successful and tumultuous years as a National League executive; his last years as an owner before the National League Board of Directors ousted him in 1914; and, finally, Murphy's attempt to rewrite his legacy through the construction of the Murphy Theater in his hometown of Wilmington, Ohio.

Book Isaac Murphy

Download or read book Isaac Murphy written by Katherine C. Mooney and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise and fall of one of America’s first Black sports celebrities Isaac Murphy, born enslaved in 1861, still reigns as one of the greatest jockeys in American history. Black jockeys like Murphy were at the top of the most popular sport in America at the end of the nineteenth century. They were internationally famous, the first African American superstar athletes—and with wins in three Kentucky Derbies and countless other prestigious races, Murphy was the greatest of them all. At the same time, he lived through the seismic events of Emancipation and Reconstruction and formative conflicts over freedom and equality in the United States. And inevitably he was drawn into those conflicts, with devastating consequences. Katherine C. Mooney uncovers the history of Murphy’s troubled life, his death in 1896 at age thirty-five, and his afterlife. In recounting Murphy’s personal story, she also tells two of the great stories of change in nineteenth-century America: the debates over what a multiracial democracy might look like and the battles over who was to hold power in an economy that increasingly resembled the corporate, wealth-polarized world we know today.

Book Emily Murphy

Download or read book Emily Murphy written by Christine Mander and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1985-01-09 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive biography, Christine Mander depicts the life and times of Emily Murphy with a refreshing candor and vitality. A true Canadian heroine – pioneering feminism, writer (under the alias Janey Canuck), patriot, mother, anti-drug crusader, first woman magistrate of the British Empire and rebel – Emily Murphy defied conventional labels. To Hell with Women Magistrates, fulminated one court official on her appointment. Her greatest triumph came in 1929 when Lord Chancellor Sankey reversed the Canadian Supreme Court decision by ruling that women are persons under the constitution and therefore eligible for any political office. When Emily Murphy died in 1933, after a long battle with diabetes, her friend and fellow activist Nellie McClung remarked, Mrs. Murphy loved a fight and so far as I know, never turned her back on one.
