She was chief of nursing under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant, and served at the Siege of Vicksburg. Known the boys as "Mother Bickerdyke," by war's end she'd been instrumental in helping build 300 hospitals and aided the wounded on 19 battlefields including the Shiloh and Sherman's March.
