Book The Delft Sand Clay and Rock Cutting Model

Download or read book The Delft Sand Clay and Rock Cutting Model written by S.A. Miedema and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sand, clay and rock have to be excavated for a variety of purposes, such as dredging, trenching, mining (including deep sea mining), drilling, tunnel boring and many other applications. Many excavations take place on dry land, but they are also frequently required in completely saturated conditions, and the methods necessary to accomplish them consequently vary widely. This book provides an overview of cutting theories. It begins with a generic model, valid for all types of soil (sand, clay and rock), and continues with the specifics of dry sand, water-saturated sand, clay, atmospheric rock and hyperbaric rock. Small blade angles and large blade angles are discussed for each soil type, and for each case considered the equations/model for cutting forces, power and specific energy are given. With models verified by laboratory research, principally from the Delft University of Technology, and data from other recognized sources, this book will prove an invaluable reference for anybody whose work involves major excavations of any kind.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Muldoon's ninth collection of poems, his first since Hay (1998), finds him working a rich vein that extends from the rivery, apple-heavy County Armagh of the 1950s, in which he was brought up, to suburban New Jersey, on the banks of a canal dug by Irish navvies, where he now lives. Grounded, glistening, as gritty as they are graceful, these poems seem capable of taking in almost anything, and anybody, be it a Tuareg glimpsed on the Irish border, Bessie Smith, Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth I, a hunted hare, William Tell, William Butler Yeats, Sitting Bull, Ted Hughes, an otter, a fox, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Joscelyne, un unearthed pit pony, a loaf of bread, an outhouse, a killdeer, Oscar Wilde, or a flock of redknots. At the heart of the book is an elegy for a miscarried child, and that elegiac tone predominates, particularly in the elegant remaking of Yeats's "A Prayer for My Daughter" with which the book concludes, where a welter of traffic signs and slogans, along with the spirits of admen, hardware storekeepers, flimflammers, fixers, and other forebears, are borne along by a hurricane-swollen canal, and private grief coincides with some of the gravest matter of our age. Moy Sand and Gravel is the winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

Book excerpt: A finalist for the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award The gripping story of the most important overlooked commodity in the world--sand--and the crucial role it plays in our lives. After water and air, sand is the natural resource that we consume more than any other--even more than oil. Every concrete building and paved road on Earth, every computer screen and silicon chip, is made from sand. From Egypt's pyramids to the Hubble telescope, from the world's tallest skyscraper to the sidewalk below it, from Chartres' stained-glass windows to your iPhone, sand shelters us, empowers us, engages us, and inspires us. It's the ingredient that makes possible our cities, our science, our lives--and our future. And, incredibly, we're running out of it. The World in a Grain is the compelling true story of the hugely important and diminishing natural resource that grows more essential every day, and of the people who mine it, sell it, build with it--and sometimes, even kill for it. It's also a provocative examination of the serious human and environmental costs incurred by our dependence on sand, which has received little public attention. Not all sand is created equal: Some of the easiest sand to get to is the least useful. Award-winning journalist Vince Beiser delves deep into this world, taking readers on a journey across the globe, from the United States to remote corners of India, China, and Dubai to explain why sand is so crucial to modern life. Along the way, readers encounter world-changing innovators, island-building entrepreneurs, desert fighters, and murderous sand pirates. The result is an entertaining and eye-opening work, one that is both unexpected and involving, rippling with fascinating detail and filled with surprising characters.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book The Effect of Gravel Content and Size on the Permeability of Sandy Soils

Download or read book The Effect of Gravel Content and Size on the Permeability of Sandy Soils written by Catherine E. Joliet and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permeability is one of the most frequently used properties of a soil in the engineering practice but is also one of the most variable. Grain size distribution and density are known to significantly influence the permeability of sandy soils. Many sandy soils contain significant amounts of gravel of varying sizes. The effect of gravel content and size on permeability of sandy soils has not been closely examined. The objective of this research was to examine what effect, if any, varying proportions and sizes of gravel has on permeability values of different types of sand. Three different types of sandy soil, designated as Soil 1, Soil 2, and Soil 3, were tested for their grain size distributions and permeability values in the loose state. Based on grain size distributions, Soil 1 is a medium to fine-grained sand, Soil 2 contains the widest range of grain sizes and is the closest to being a well-graded sand, and Soil 3 is a coarse-grained sand. Additionally, three different gravel sizes, including 1′′- 3/4′′ (25.4 mm - 19.05 mm), 3/4′′- 1/2′′ (19.05 mm - 12.7 mm), and 1/2′′- #4 (12.7 mm - 4.75 mm), were chosen for the study. Each of the three gravel sizes was mixed with each of the three sands in increments of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, by weight of sand, to prepare sand-gravel mixtures. The constant head permeability test was used to measure permeability of the three sands as well as their mixtures with gravel. The samples of sand and sand-gravel mixtures were poured into the permeameter in the loose state and allowed to saturate for 24 hours before measuring permeability. Three measurements of permeability were taken for each sand sample and each mixture and average values were obtained. Using Microsoft Excel, gravel content was plotted against permeability to examine the influence of a given size and proportion of gravel on each of the three types of sand used in the study. The results of this research shows that the presence of gravel influences the permeability of sandy soils, but the nature and degree of influence depends upon the type of the sand. For some sandy soils, the presence of gravel may facilitate water flow through the soil and increase their permeability whereas for others it may obstruct flow and decrease permeability. In some cases, the presence of gravel may not have any significant effect on permeability. It appears that the grain size distribution of the base sand, in relation to the gravel, plays a more important role in influencing the permeability of sand-gravel mixtures than the amount and size of gravel.
