Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lex Mosaica: Or the Law of Moses and the Higher Criticism HE Higher Criticism has had its say in this country as well as on the Continents of Europe and America. Sporadic efforts have been already made by re sponsible writers to Show that the new position is either untenable or is fraught with greater difficulties than the traditional view. But' it occurred to the Editor that there was still room for a work which should put to a more systematic test the working of the recent hypotheses. We appeal to the same documents as our Opponents. We believe that our Opponents are equally with our selves desirous to arrive at truth. The critics have appealed to the development of events as recorded in the Old Testament in verification of their theories: we endeavour to Show that upon these theories the history is unworkable in any one of the centuries between the period of the great lawgiver and the completion of the Canon. Book The Law of Moses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Law of Moses Classic Reprint written by Édouard Naville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Moses In the Article which follows, a powerful argu ment is presented in support of the traditional belief of Jews and Christians, and, indeed, of all generations from the time of our Lord till about a hundred years ago, that the Five Books of our Bible, called the Pentateuch, are the Law of Moses. For these last hundred years, a school of criticism has prevailed in' the Universities of Germany and England, which denies this tra dition, and alleges that these five books are, in their present form, a compilation by Jewish scribes, after the Babylonian captivity, from writers so unknown that they can only be designated by letters, J., H., P., H., and so on, who wrote centuries after Moses. Nor is this the most important part of the critical theory. Such writers might tell the truth. But these writers and compilers together are said to have presented in the Pentateuch, 'to the Jewish people and the world, a radically false account of early Jewish history, and to have attributed to Moses legisla tion which came at a much later date. Voltaire once asked whether, if a sacred Book was found to state what was not true, it could be considered sacred. Strange to say, a large body of English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses and Deuteronomy While I do not fear the ostracism of scientific opinion, yet I wish honestly to recognize the full force of the critical arguments. Let us then briefly examine some of the reasons why the critics would have us believe that Deuteronomy was not written until centuries after Moses. These are mainly threefold (1) Certain ex pressions which Moses could not have used; (2) certain laws, whose origin must be assigned to a much later period than that of the great lawgiver; (3) the absence of allusions to this book by the prophets of the eighth century. Of course there are several other grounds which are of subordinate importance, and for which there is no room in a brief and popular article. Excerpt: ...them for the last time in the Apocalypse of John, where we hear them once more singing, "Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty;" where, also, there is a throne, with a lamb upon it, as if it had been slain, and beside the throne four-and-twenty elders, representing the tribes of the redeemed. Now, observe how the Apocalypse, with its Paradise regained, stands in contrast to Genesis, with its Paradise lost. In Genesis, the cherubim are warding men away; in the Apocalypse, they are complacent onlookers, while the elders are seated on either side of the throne; and the reason of the difference is that on the throne itself there is the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world. But just as, in John's vision, the cherubim are satisfied at the reception of the Redeemed, because the Lamb was slain, so here on the ark of the covenant they are complacent on-lookers as God meets and communes with his people through their representative, because his holiness has been conserved by the blood of atonement. Perhaps this lesson was not learned by the people all at once; yet the fact that, in both the visions of Isaiah and John, the cherubic anthem voiced itself in the words, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord," is not without its significance as furnishing the key to the meaning of their symbolism. But now, looking to the teaching of the tabernacle as to the manner in which the people were to approach God, there are some things of great importance suggested. I have already incidentally referred to certain truths which could not rightly be overlooked when speaking of God's abode among his people; yet if I should touch them from another side, that will only serve to show the importance which they held in the view of the Divine Instructor....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Old Bible: Moses on the Plains of Moab Objection to Moses writing of himself in the third person. He supposes the book to have been written three or four hundred years after the death of Moses, and represents the author as composing it after the manner of a drama, and introducing Moses once and again as a speaker. With the natural vigour of his intellect, not strained by critical studies, he held it as certain, that if he could disprove its antiquity and Mosaic authority, all its claim to inspiration would be gone. But it was answered that for a writer to speak of himself in the third person was a form employed by the best ancient authors. That it was used by Moses himself is clear from his summary of Israel's journey ings near the end of the preceding book of Numbers. In the beginning of the thirty-third chapter we read These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. And Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of the Lord and these are their journeys according to their goings out (v. 1, Then follow the exact words of Moses; which he wrote by the command of God (v. But he does not write as we might have expected, And we departed from Rameses in the first month, but And they departed, and so throughout the chapter speaking of the progress of the nation as their goings, and not as ours, although all the while he was himself their leader. But to modern ears, as well to ancient, if we mistake not, the form which the Hebrew lawgiver has adopted in his introduction to the noble record of the nation's history and teaching and laws is preferable to any other; These are the words which I spake unto all Israel on this side' Jordan in the wilderness would even to us have been neither so good nor so natural a title for his great work as the one which he has himself. Preferred These are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deuteronomy: The Words of Moses on the Plains of Moab Passing over this episode in Israel's history for the present, the only thing that remains to be noticed before the death of Moses on Pisgah is the solemn and affecting charge which he addressed to the people on the plains of Moab, and which we have somewhat fully reported in the book of Deu teronomy. Had I come to this point a few years ago, i would have proceeded at once to take a rapid survey of that long and beautiful discourse, as throwing light upon the character of the aged law giver and his fatherly affection for his people. But, as you know well, doubts have recently been thrown upon the question, whether the words recorded in Deuteronomy were ever spoken by Moses at all. The historical character of the book, or at least of large portions of it, has been denied. It has been confidently asserted that it bears intrinsic evi dence of a later date, and that it contains legisla tion which conflicts with that of the three previous books - legislation which did not come into force till the time of King Josiah, so that we must con clude that it was written shortly before that time by some unknown prophet, and thrown paraboli cally into the form of an address delivered by Moses several centuries before, simply to indicate that it was a legitimate development of the Mosaic law. This view having, from peculiar circum stances, been brought before the public in a way calculated to produce an impression in its favour, I feel that it lies directly in my way, so that I cannot proceed on the assumption that Deuter onomy does contain the speeches and laws of Moses without giving, as briefly as I can, my reasons for this belief.
