Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses and Modern Science F we make our first approach to the Bible on the side of the Old Testament, we see much that looks to us, at first sight, unlike what we might expect to find in a volume given to us by divine inspiration. We meet, at the very out set, with an account of the creation of the world which seems to be essentially at variance with modern science, and of an apparently universal deluge which the philosophy of the present day de clares to have been impossible; we encounter a chronology which does not leave room for the peopling of the world with those multitudes of men which must have existed at certain given periods, or for the succession of national and of natural changes which archaeologists and geologists assert to have taken place since man first appeared on earth; we find a history which, according to our fallible judg. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is Moses Scientific?: First Chapter of Genesis Tested by Latest Discoveries of Science Prologue. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The first chapter of Genesis is prophecy turned backward. It cannot be history, for it reaches back before man was, before the earth was, yes before time itself began to be. On such adventurous flight, imagination would not venture forth alone. The trembling seer must have been encouraged and borne across the measureless distances by other than human power. These twinkling points, which he shows us in the depths of the past and which form this galaxy of Genesis, are they real stars, or are they only the after-glow of the distant fires kindled by some sagacious man primeval? Book Moses and Deuteronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moses and Deuteronomy Classic Reprint written by Samuel Ives Curtiss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses and Deuteronomy While I do not fear the ostracism of scientific opinion, yet I wish honestly to recognize the full force of the critical arguments. Let us then briefly examine some of the reasons why the critics would have us believe that Deuteronomy was not written until centuries after Moses. These are mainly threefold (1) Certain ex pressions which Moses could not have used; (2) certain laws, whose origin must be assigned to a much later period than that of the great lawgiver; (3) the absence of allusions to this book by the prophets of the eighth century. Of course there are several other grounds which are of subordinate importance, and for which there is no room in a brief and popular article. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Henry Morris has been known as a defender of the Christian faith. It's an auspicious title for such a humble man, yet no one can deny that the grasp Morris has on science and faith issues is staggering. In this updated classic, Morris walks the reader through history "real history" by showing the absurdity of evolution. From a wide variety of sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, Morris presents clear evidence that the Bible gives us an astonishingly accurate record of the past, present, and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking study, Susan Handelman examines the theological roots of the modern science of interpretation. She defines current structures of thought and patterns of organizing reality, clearly distinguishes them from previously reigning Hellenic modes of abstract thought, and connects them with important elements of the Rabbinic interpretive tradition. Hers is the first comprehensive treatment of the undeniable, and undeniably significant, influence of Jewish religious thought on contemporary literary criticism. Dr. Handelman shows how they provide a crucial link among several of the most influential modern theories of textual interpretation, from Freud to the Deconstructionist School of Lacan and Derrida, as well as current literary theorists who revive Rabbinic hermeneutics, such as Harold Bloom and Geoffrey Hartman.

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses and the Philosophers, or Plain Facts in Plain Words There is a manifest and a wise end in the joints of our frame - as for instance, the ball and socket of the shoulder, but there is quite as palpable a purpose in the way in which these joints have been formed in the geological ages. Here we are taught, and our sons at college are taught, that these human frames of ours were formed or developed in the geological ages - that they were formed not from human bones, as human beings did not live in the geological ages - but that they were formed or developed from the bones of inferior animals - which is the philosophy taught by Messrs. Darwin, Huxley and Spencer. And we have not learned that there was a dissenting or a protesting voice in that assembly of divines. This is an omen of no good. It shows whither we are drifting. Download or read book The History of Moses Classic Reprint written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Moses There was a woman that had a child when all the babies were to be drowned and she was a good woman and she asked God how she could save her baby and God told her to make a basket of rushes and put it in the water hiding it in the rushes. Then Pharaoh's daughter was going to bathe in a certain place and as she went past she saw the cradle and asked her servants to go and bring it out and they did it. When they brought it out they lifted the thing up that was on the top and. They saw a baby crying. Then they saw the child's sister that was standing far away and Pharaoh's daughter cried to her to come and when she came she told her to call a nurse for the baby and then she ran and brought the mother of it and she told the mother to take charge of it and to come to the palace and so she came. Then Moses when he was grown up was sent away to show some wonders to the Israelites and God told him the things he was to do. He first told him to lay down his rod and when he laid it down it became a serpent. Then he told him to go and do it when he was with the Israelites and he said he would do it. Then God told him to put his hand into his breast and he did so and his hand became a leper, then he pulled it out and he put it in again and when he pulled it out it was just the way it was before. Then God told him to do that and he went away home to the house that he lived in and God told him that he would have to go to the Israelites. Then he went away to the Israelites. One day Moses saw a Egyptian whipping a Israelite and he came and killed the Egyptian. It was not wrong of Moses to kill the Egyptian because he was doing harm to the Israelite for he was an Israelite too. After that God told Aaron and Moses to go up and try to make Pharaoh let the Israelites go away and then Aaron and Moses went up to speak to him and asked him if he would allow them to go and Pharaoh said no that he wouldn't. Then Aaron laid down the rod and behold it became a serpent. He took it by the tail and pulled it up and it turned into a rod. He put his hand into his breast and it became a leper and he put it in again and it was just as it was before. Then the Egyptians took all their rods and laid them down and they became ser pents. Pharaoh said he would let them go but he hard ened his heart and would not. When Pharaoh was going to bathe at a certain place Aaron stretched his rod over the water and it became blood. Then Pharaoh went home in despair and he said he would let them go but he hardened his heart again. Then Aaron stretched out his rod and frogs came forth and crept over all the beds and eat up all the food and everything and he said he would let them go but he hardened his heart again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The "Friend of Moses" Or, a Defence of the Pentateuch as the Production of Moses and an Inspired Document, Against the Objections of Modern Skepticism Several years have elapsed since circumstances, which it is not necessary here to explain, induced the writer to direct his attention once again, and more particularly, to the subjects discussed in this volume, many of which had occupied his attention and awakened his lively interest, in earlier life. In writing these pages, the Author has freely availed himself of the works Of others. Generally, reference is expressly made to the works so used: but it is very possible that the thoughts, and even the words of others, may have been introduced, even into the text, where such reference is not made. In preparing a work like this, amid the varied avocations of a Christian pastor, settled in a Southern city, such omissions are almost unavoidable. At the close of the volume will be appended a list of most of the authors herein referred to, or consulted; and the edition will be named, SO that if plagiarism be suspected, it may be detected with out difficulty.
