Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 by a Serbian nationalist has set off a crisis in Europe. Since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, peace had largely prevailed among the Great Powers, preserved through international conferences and a delicate balance of power. Now, however, interlocking alliances are threatening to plunge Europe into war, as Austria-Hungry is threatening war against Serbia. Germany is allied with Austria-Hungary, while Russia views itself as the protector of Serbia. Britain is torn between fear of a German victory and a Russian one. France supports Russia but also needs Britain on its side. Can war be avoided one more time? Europe on the Brink plunges students into the July Crisis as representatives of the European powers. What choices will they make?

Download or read book Surry County North Carolina Wills 1771 1827 written by Jo White Linn and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1992 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.

Download or read book The Rights of Strangers written by Georg Cavallar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the thinking of European authors from Vitoria to Kant about political justice, the global community, and the rights of strangers as one special form of interaction among individuals of divergent societies, political communities, and cultures. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it covers historical material from a predominantly philosophical perspective, interpreting authors who have tackled problems related to the rights of strangers under the heading of international hospitality. Their analyses of the civitas maxima or the societas humani generis covered the nature of the global commonwealth. Their doctrines of natural law (ius naturae) were supposed to provide what we nowadays call theories of political justice. The focus of the work is on international hospitality as part of the law of nations, on its scope and justification. It follows the political ideas of Francisco de Vitoria and the Second Scholastic in the 16th century, of Alberico Gentili, Hugo Grotius, Samuel Pufendorf, Christian Wolff, Emer de Vattel, Johann Jacob Moser, and Immanuel Kant. It draws attention to the international dimension of political thought in Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, David Hume, Adam Smith, and others. This is predominantly a study in intellectual history which contextualizes ideas, but also emphasizes their systematic relevance.
Download or read book Notes on a Special Place written by Howard A. Weinberger and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After searching for years for a mountain cabin site in the west, the author purchased 13 acres out of an old horse and cattle ranch dating back to 1881, just outside of what is now Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Gradually he became interested in the history of his land and uncovered a rich trove of Mescalero Apache, Spanish, Mexican and American cultures coming together, warring and ultimately co-existing in this little corner of the country. These disjointed notes are the results of his research and insight. Coronado, Kit Carson, Santana, Billy the Kid, the Bullards and Mosers, The Eddy Brothers, J. Robert Oppenheimer and, in turn, the Weinbergers all appear on or within a few miles of this special place. This is their story.
