Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Moscow It is difficult for one not of the Eastern Church to write justly of Russian Ecclesiasticism an alien, how ever carefully he may observe, is liable to obtain faulty impressions and make erroneous deductions; so to me any criticism seems an impertinence. I have tried to present its artistic phases fairly, but am conscious that the ninth chapter is the least satisfactory of all that I have written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Series of Famous Fiction: The Gunmaker of Moscow In the department of the Moscow - sand very near the a, stood an humble cot, the exterior of betrayed a neatness of arrangement and show of taste that more than made up for its smallness of size. Nor was it so very small in fact, but only in contrast for near at hand about it stood many large, shabby, dirty-looking structures that overlooked the prim cot, as bleak mountains may look down upon a verdant hill. And within, this cot was as neat as without. The two apartments in front, one of which was only used in winter, were furnished not only with neatness, but with a fair show of ornament and luxury. Back of these were a large cooking and dining-room, and two small bed-rooms and back still from these was an artisan's shop, and other out-build ings. This shop was devoted to the manufacture of firearms. Mostly. Some swords, and other edged wea pons, were made here upon special application. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to Do?: Thoughts Evoked by the Census of Moscow Books which are prohibited by the Russian Censor are not always inaccessible. An enterprising publishing-house in Geneva makes a specialty of supplying the natural craving of man for forbidden fruit, under which heading some of Count L. N. Tolstoi's essays belong. These essays circulate in Russia in manuscript; and it is from one of these manuscripts, which fell into the hands of the Geneva firm, that the first half of the present translation has been made. It is thus that the Censor's omissions have been noted, even in cases where such omissions are in no way Indicated in the twelfth volume of Count Tolstoi's collected works, published in Moscow. As an interesting detail in this connection, I may mention that this twelfth volume contains all that the censor allows of "My Religion," amounting to a very much abridged scrap of Chapter X. in the last-named volume as known to the public outside of Russia. The last half of the present book has not been published by the Geneva house, and omissions cannot be marked. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey to St. Petersburg and Moscow Through Courland and Livonia The desert became still more desolate, and the wind began to moan with that strange unearthly sound which it has in lonely places, over tracts of snow or sand. To the left, the wilderness was bound in by the distant Baltic as with a girdle, only distinguishable from the sky, with which it mingled, by its deeper blue. Every where else fields of sand and morass extended to the verge of the horizon. This apparently was a neutral ground between the two countries; and it was with no small degree of curiosity that I awaited my introduction into Russia.
