Book Mortality Studies on Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake by Orville P Ball and Oliver B Cope

Download or read book Mortality Studies on Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake by Orville P Ball and Oliver B Cope written by Orville P. Ball and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a study of the Yellowstone Lake cutthroat trout, Salmo clarki lewisi, by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, effects of environment on mortality of eggs, immature fish, spawners, and postspawners were measured for various components of the population in Yellowstone Lake (Wyoming). Five methods for estimating mortality of adults on spawning runs are described, with counting and tagging as the principal procedures. Of the total number of eggs deposited in the gravel, 60 to 75 percent died before hatching, and 99.6 percent had died by the time the fingerlings enetered Yellowstone Lake. In Arnica Creek runs, 48.6 percent died in the stream, 40.2 died later in the lake of natural causes, 7.6 were taken by fishermen, and 3.6 percent were alive 2 years later. The white pelican is a serious predator on cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake. From 1949 to 1953 fishermen caught 11.6 percent of the catchable trout available to them. Migrations of adult fish in Yellowstone Lake were traced through tagging.

Book Changes in the Fish Population of Lewis and Clark Lake 1956 74 and Their Relation to Water Management and the Environment

Download or read book Changes in the Fish Population of Lewis and Clark Lake 1956 74 and Their Relation to Water Management and the Environment written by Charles H. Walburg and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water management of the Lewis and Clark Lake for flood control, hydroelectric power, navigation, and other purposes affected fish population levels. Fluctuating water levels in May and June affected fish spawning and survival of young. Suggested management measures may improve sport fish abundance, such as construction of spawning and nursery ponds near the reservoir or maintenance of higher water levels during May and June to enhance the reproduction opportunities for desirable species are either too costly or inconsistent with the primary flood-control function of the reservoir. Fish abundance with the present water management regimen will probably remain similar to that of the early 1970's.

Book Review of Fishery Studies on Missouri River Main Stem Reservoirs

Download or read book Review of Fishery Studies on Missouri River Main Stem Reservoirs written by Norman Gustaf Benson and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six main stem Missouri River reservoirs are described, and information available through 1964 on plankton, water chemistry, fish populations, and water management is discussed. At maximum pool, these reservoirs have a capacity of 76 million acre-feet and a surface area of 1.2 million acres. Each of the upper reservoirs is larger in capacity and area than the sum of the lower three reservoirs. Fishes common in this system are bigmouth buffalo, carp, river carpsucker, yellow perch, goldeye, northern pike, sauger, walleye, white crappie, black crappie, and freshwater drum. Available information on growth rates, year-class strength, and relative abundance of common species is described. Limiting factors of the environments are the turbidities, wind, and fine soils. Research needs and problems relative to fish production are discussed.

Book Predicting Year class Abundance of Yellowstone Lake Cutthroat Trout

Download or read book Predicting Year class Abundance of Yellowstone Lake Cutthroat Trout written by Ross V. Bulkley and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations in strength of year classes from 1945 to 1956 of Yellowstone Lake cutthroat from Pelican and Chipmunk Creeks are compared with the parental stock and several climatically influenced factors of the environment. Variations in year-class strength in the two tributaries were highly correlated with fluctuations in lake water levels. Strong year classes occurred in yeas of low water. Female spawner escapement, timing of the runs, and summer air temperatures were not significant factors. A formula based on water levels is presented for predicting year-class strength in Pelican Creek and in the Fishing Bridge area fishery. Stocking of fry in years of high water is suggested as a means of supplementing natural production. A method of forecasting lake water levels several months in advance of their occurrence is discussed.

Book Bibliography on the Blood Chemistry of Fishes

Download or read book Bibliography on the Blood Chemistry of Fishes written by Joseph B. Hunn and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature search, starting from scratch, is expensive in terms of time spend in comparison with information gathered. This bibliography includes earlier references by Hunn (1959, 1960) that provide some information to anyone seeking a range of "normal" blood values for fish blood chemistry as well as additional literature that attempts to evaluate the physiological responses of fish to changes in their environment.

Book Ecology of Daphnia in Bull Shoals Reservoir

Download or read book Ecology of Daphnia in Bull Shoals Reservoir written by Richard L. Applegate and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life histories of Daphnia galeata mendotae, D. retrocurva, D. parvula, D. ambigua, and D. schoedleri are compared with year class strength and food of threadfin shad in Bull Shoals Reservoir from 1965 to 1967. Maximum population density of daphnids was in April, May, and June. Populations declined to insignificant densities throughout the rest of the year. Declines coincided with the inclusion of Daphnia in the diets of threadfin shad smaller than 14 mm. Declines in the summer of 1967 coincided with both young shad predation and high Leptodora kindtii density. Population changes associated with declining year class strength of threadfin shad were an increase of the large D. schoedleri and Leptodora kindtii from nondetectable or trace densities to relatively large populations, and increase from nondetectable densities of daphnids in the summer to detectable densities, and a twofold to threefold increase in the summer standing crops of Bosmina longirostris.

Book Equilibrium Yield and Management of Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake

Download or read book Equilibrium Yield and Management of Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake written by Norman Gustaf Benson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equilibrium yield of the cutthroat trout, Salmo clarki lewisi Girard, in Yellowstone Lake, Wyo., is determined from data on catch and spawning runs from 1945 to 1961. Changes in growth rate, spawning runs, mortality rates, and year-class strength are related to differences in total catch. Three stages of exploitation of the stock are defined and the maximum safe catch or equilibrium yield is estimated at 325,000 trout. Management of the sport fishery according to equilibrium yield is discussed with reference to regulations, distribution of fishing pressure, planting, and interspecific competition. The Yellowstone River fishery is treated briefly.

Book Food Habits of Striped Marlin and Sailfish Off Mexico and Southern California

Download or read book Food Habits of Striped Marlin and Sailfish Off Mexico and Southern California written by Douglas H. Evans and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stomach contents of 924 striped marlin landed in the sport catches at Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and Buena Vista, Baja California, Sur, Mexico, and San Diego, California, and of 197 sailfish from Mazatlan and Buena Vista were examined. The striped marlin and sailfish fed primarily on pelagic fishes and cephalopods. By volume the major foods were squid (principally Dosidicus gigas) for striped marlin at Mazatlan and for striped marlin and sailfish at Buena Vista, northern anchovy for striped marlin at San Diego, and threadfin for sailfish at Mazatlan. Locally differences in food habits were pronounced, and some seasonal and yearly differences were found.

Book Effects of Accumulated Excretory Products on Hatchery reared Salmonids

Download or read book Effects of Accumulated Excretory Products on Hatchery reared Salmonids written by Roger E. Burrows and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In experiments at the Bureau's Salmon-Cultural Laboratory, to determine the excretory products of significance in rearing ponds and the possible effect of these products on fingerling chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), the results demonstrated that ammonia and urea are the principal products. The relative amounts of these products vary with the concentration of fish and with their metabolic activity. Ammonia assumes dominance in an unfavorable environment. Water temperature, pH, and pond type affect the toxicity of ammonia solutions. Continuous exposure to levels of ammonia normally encountered in rearing ponds produced extensive hyperplasia of the gill epithelium in controlled experiments.

Book A Device for Stamina Measurement of Fingerling Salmonids

Download or read book A Device for Stamina Measurement of Fingerling Salmonids written by Allan E. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stamina tunnel was developed to measure differences in physical performance of salmonid fingerlings.
