Book excerpt: Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as the genealogist's bible."" The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""

Book United States Census Mortality Schedule Register

Download or read book United States Census Mortality Schedule Register written by Stephen M. Charter and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This register lists Family History Library book and microfilm numbers for the schedules and indexes. It is arranged by census year and then by state. The first column lists call numbers for book indexes. The indexes produced by Accelerated Indexing Systems (A.I.S.) transcribe most of the information found in the original schedules. Those that are labeled as transcripts usually contain the full information in the schedule and also have indexes. Approximately two-thirds of the existing schedules have been indexed. County transcripts of some Alabama, Texas, and New Jersey mortality schedules have been published serially in genealogical magazines. The second column gives call numbers for the original mortality schedules and transcripts that are on microfilm and microfiche"--Introd.

Book Demographic Analysis

Download or read book Demographic Analysis written by Roland Pressat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population control requires that the birth rate equal to the death rate. If it is too low population will decline; if it is too high, population will increase. If either condition persists long enough the population will diminish towards zero or increase towards infinity. Fortunately, the birth trajectory does not have to be set once and for all, but can be adjusted within limits. Since birth and death rates determine whether we are heading for population extinction or explosion, they are well designated "vital statistics." Their understanding and use are a central theme of demographic analysis."Demographic Analysis" presents those techniques that are often called for in the study of demographic problems. Such techniques permit researchers to fill the gap between the large amounts of data made available by censuses and the theoretical and practical questions that need to be answered; the techniques of this book effectively bring the data into confrontation with the problems. In his treatment of population projection, Pressat applies methods developed in earlier sections for mortality arid fertility. The emphasis is on population projection and accords with its usefulness in demographic analysis. The meaning of a demographic rate or trend is brought out by seeing to what condition it would lead if continued. No assumption is made that the concrete future will follow either path. The substance of the book is devoted to the main themes of mortality and fertility. Underlying these as well as nearly every other kind of data with which the demographer deals is the problem of location in time - the relation of vital events to the calendar, and also to the age of the persons undergoing them. Pressat's detailed attention to this problem forms a solid basis for how current methodology accounts of demographic changes.

  • Author : Myra Vanderpool Gormley
  • Publisher : Genealogical Publishing Com
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 0806312548
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Family Diseases written by Myra Vanderpool Gormley and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1989 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While geneticists have long been interested in genealogy and genealogists in genetics, only recently have the two fields become linked in a way that promises dramatic advances in our understanding of the relationship between genetic disorders and ancestry. This book, by Los Angeles Times Syndicate columnist Myra Gormley, was a pioneering effort to explore that relationship, to alert people to things they and their family ought to know about both their family tree and genetic research, and to examine the scientific breakthroughs that have made possible the control and treatment of some inherited diseases. Written in a popular style, in language few of us will find difficult to understand, this ground-breaking work examines the genetics revolution and its implications for your health; it discusses genetic diseases and whether you and your family may be at risk; and it explores your mental and behavioral roots--your genetic susceptibility to manic depression, for example, or to alcoholism--all in the framework of ancestry and family health history.
