Book Mortality in semi mature white spruce on Prince Edward Island

Download or read book Mortality in semi mature white spruce on Prince Edward Island written by Canada. Forestry Canada. Maritimes Region and published by Fredericton, N.B. : Forestry Canada - Maritimes. This book was released on 1988 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are about 50,000 ha of white spruce stands on formerly agricultural land in Prince Edward Island, representing about 30% of the province's merchantable softwood resource. Over 60% of the field spruce is 30-50 years of age, about the limit of their growth. Since this early mortality is limited to white spruce growth on formerly cultivated fields, the study postulated that nutrient deficiencies might be the main cause of the early mortality. With the assumption that P.E.I. white spruce is genetically similar to white spruce on nearby undisturbed soils, comparisons of nutrient level trends were carried out over age sampling continuum in the two situations. Both current and year- old foliage were sampled, because deficiencies are sometimes characterized by withdrawal of scarce nutrients for old to new foliage.
