Book Mortality and Life Expectancy of Indigenous Australians

Download or read book Mortality and Life Expectancy of Indigenous Australians written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report provides an overview of current patterns and trends in mortality and life expectancy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Circulatory diseases were the leading cause of death of Indigenous Australians for the period 2008-2012 (representing 26% of Indigenous deaths), followed by cancer (20%) and external causes (15%). There have been significant declines in overall Indigenous mortality rates as well as mortality rates from circulatory diseases and respiratory diseases between 2001 and 2012. However, there has been little improvement in Indigenous mortality from other causes such as cancer and external causes over this period."--Publisher abstract.

Book Life Expectancy and Mortality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Download or read book Life Expectancy and Mortality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous Australians experience much higher death rates than the non-Indigenous Australians across all age groups and for all major causes of death. In 2004-2008, the age-standardised death rate for Indigenous males was 1.9 times the rate for non-Indigenous males while for Indigenous females it was 2 times the rate of non-Indigenous females. Indigenous life expectancy for 2005-07 was estimated to be 67.2 years for males, 11.5 years lower than for non-Indigenous males, and 72.9 years for females, which was 9.7 years lower than for non-Indigenous females.

Book Statistical and Computational Issues in Fitting a New Model for Indigenous Life Expectancy

Download or read book Statistical and Computational Issues in Fitting a New Model for Indigenous Life Expectancy written by Lulu Fu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian population experiences the lowest mortality in the world. However, mortality rates for Indigenous Australians are significantly higher than for the non-Indigenous population across all age groups. Consequently, there is a huge gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous life expectancy. The gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous life expectancy is of great concern to the Australian government. In 2008, the Council of Australian Governments set a goal to close the gap by 2031. Although life expectancy plays a crucial role in assessing Indigenous disadvantage, estimation of Indigenous life expectancy is particularly difficult. Both Indigenous death registrations and population estimates are subject to incompleteness and accuracy issues. A main factor causing these issues is difficulties in correctly identifying Indigenous status. This is because a person's Indigenous status could be either misidentified or not identified at all. Many life expectancy estimation methods have been developed to address the accuracy and completeness issues of death registrations. The most well-known methods are the Brass method, the Hill method, the Bhat method and the record linkage method. However, each of the existing methods has some limitations. The Brass method, the Hill method and the Bhat method ignore people with unidentified Indigenous status. In addition, the Brass method and the Hill method do not take into account migration. For the Bhat method, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) discovered that it can produce results that are inconsistent with observed data. The record linkage method is able to incorporate people whose Indigenous status is unknown but it is very complicated to apply. The method requires accurate and confidential data such as name, age, sex and place of usual residence. Such detailed data may not be readily available or the data may lack accuracy. In addition, all these methods rely on reported Indigenous status (either from the individual themselves or from a relative), which could be unreliable or inconsistent. In this thesis, we propose a new mathematical model and explore the possibility to overcome the problems associated with the estimation of Indigenous population life expectancy. The model does not require detailed personal information. It is very flexible and allows the possibility that a person's Indigenous status is wrongly reported or unidentified. However, it is quite computationally demanding to implement. For the purpose of this thesis, we focus on the statistical and computational issues in fitting the model and investigate various strategies to increase the feasibility of actually using the model to produce reliable estimates.

Book The Burden of Disease and Injury in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2003

Download or read book The Burden of Disease and Injury in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2003 written by Dr. Theo Vos and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there have been numerous burden of disease studies over the past decade in developed countries, including several in Australia, the framework and tools have never before been applied to measure disease burden in Indigenous populations apart from a pilot study in the Northern Territory, although the need for such evidence to guide policies and programs is clear. Given the uncertain quality of many data sources on Indigenous health, and the lack of comprehensive information about the comparative importance of various diseases and injuries, it has been difficult to appreciate the complete set of priorities for Indigenous health development. This report responds to that need by providing the first ever burden of disease and injury estimates for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia by leading experts in the field. Detailed estimates are provided of the comparative importance of over 170 diseases and injuries for the health of Indigenous Australians, and in doing so, this report fills an important gap in the evidence base for Indigenous Australian health policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mortality over the twentieth century in Australia' is a comprehensive analysis of the causes of death from 1907 to 2000. Although it is well known that life expectancy for Australians increased over the last century, analyses presented in this report show how the changes in the causes of death help to explain why we are living longer. This report describes patterns and trends in mortality over the century, highlighting the great successes but also some areas where improvements are still clearly needed.

Book Social Determinants of Indigenous Health

Download or read book Social Determinants of Indigenous Health written by Bronwyn Carson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunities and comfortable lifestyle available to most Australians have been denied to generations of Indigenous people. As a result some of Australia's original inhabitants suffer from what has been described as 'Fourth World' standards of health. This is out of place in a country that prides itself on egalitarianism and a fair go for all. Shifting the focus from individual behaviour, to the social and political circumstances that influence people's lives and ultimately their health, helps us to understand the origins of poor health. It can also guide action to bring about change. Social Determinants of Indigenous Health offers a systematic overview of the relationship between the social and political environment and health. Highly respected contributors from around Australia examine the long-term health impacts of the Indigenous experience of dispossession, colonial rule and racism. They also explore the role of factors such as poverty, class, community and social capital, education, employment and housing. They scrutinise the social dynamics of making policy for Indigenous Australians, and the interrelation between human rights and health. Finally, they outline a framework for effective health interventions, which take social factors into consideration. This is a groundbreaking work, developed in consultation with Indigenous health professionals and researchers. It is essential reading for anyone working in Indigenous health.

Book Trapped in the Gap

Download or read book Trapped in the Gap written by Emma Kowal and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia, a ‘tribe’ of white, middle-class, progressive professionals is actively working to improve the lives of Indigenous people. This book explores what happens when well-meaning people, supported by the state, attempt to help without harming. ‘White anti-racists’ find themselves trapped by endless ambiguities, contradictions, and double binds — a microcosm of the broader dilemmas of postcolonial societies. These dilemmas are fueled by tension between the twin desires of equality and difference: to make Indigenous people statistically the same as non-Indigenous people (to 'close the gap') while simultaneously maintaining their ‘cultural’ distinctiveness. This tension lies at the heart of failed development efforts in Indigenous communities, ethnic minority populations and the global South. This book explains why doing good is so hard, and how it could be done differently.
