Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fairly comprehensive description of the Morphology of Hindi. This description is located in the theory proposed by Ford and Singh. They question some of the most celebrated concepts of morphology and build a theory of morphological relatedness around the word as the basic unit and a set of bidirectional Word Formation Strategies. Morphology is essentially regarded as the study of relationships obtaining among formally and semantically related words. These Word Formation Strategies constitute extremely complex networks of word-relatedness. Access to a single member of a given network can activate the whole network. It examines critically not only the concepts used in traditional morphology but also the work done on Hindi morphology during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In addition to examining intra-and intercategorial relationships among Hindi nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, the book includes sections on morphophonemic changes, minimization of morphological marks, non-morphemic morphemes and multiple affixation.

Book Ved nta Bhakti and Their Early Modern Sources

Download or read book Ved nta Bhakti and Their Early Modern Sources written by Rosina Pastore and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the Prabodhacandrodaya Nāṭaka (c. 1760 CE), an allegorical drama composed by Brajvāsīdās in Brajbhāṣā. It contributes to the study of vernacular nāṭakas with its first complete English translation. Moreover, the critical analysis shows that the foundational Sanskrit texts for Vedānta and those for Bhakti play a part in the Prabodhacandrodaya Nāṭaka's philosophical and religious edifice. At the same time, the investigation demonstrates that Brajvāsīdās expresses several philosophical ideas by adaptively reusing the Rāmcaritmānas by Tulsīdās (c. 1574 CE). Brajvāsīdās composes a dohā by combining one line of his invention with a line from the Mānas. This method is employed throughout all the personified metaphysical concepts. That Brajvāsī not only read Bhakti but also Vedānta through the Rāmcaritmānas highlights the philosophical and literary creativity in 18th c. North India. It points to the necessity to rethink the sources of Vedānta philosophies, by including works non-conventional for language and genre, because not in Sanskrit and not śāstras. Such sources may not be original in their contribution per se but are essential to understand how early modern philosophy was done, conceived and transmitted.

Book Grammaticalization and the Rise of Configurationality in Indo Aryan

Download or read book Grammaticalization and the Rise of Configurationality in Indo Aryan written by Uta Reinöhl and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines historical changes in the grammar of the Indo-Aryan languages from the period of their earliest attestations in Vedic Sanskrit (around 1000 bc) to contemporary Hindi. Uta Reinöhl focuses specifically on the rise of configurational structure as a by-product of the grammaticalization of postpositions: while Vedic Sanskrit lacks function words that constrain nominal expressions into phrasal units - one of the characteristics of a non-configurational language - New Indo-Aryan languages have postpositions which organize nominal expressions into postpositional phrases. The grammaticalization of postpositions and the concomitant syntactic changes are traced through the three millennia of Indo-Aryan attested history with a focus on Vedic Sanskrit, Middle Indic Pali and Apabhramsha, Early New Indic Old Awadhi, and finally Hindi. Among the topics discussed are the constructions in which the postpositions grammaticalize, the origins of the postpositional template, and the paradigmatization of the various elements involved into a single functional class of postpositions. The book outlines how it is semantic and pragmatic changes that induce changes on the expression side, ultimately resulting in the establishment of phrasal, and thus low-level configurational, syntax.

Book Indo Aryan Ergativity in Typological and Diachronic Perspective

Download or read book Indo Aryan Ergativity in Typological and Diachronic Perspective written by Eystein Dahl and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a state-of-the-art survey of synchronic and diachronic dimensions of Ergativity in the Indo-Aryan language family. It contains an introduction drawing on the most important recent typological and theoretical contributions to this field, plus seven papers about the origin, development and distribution of ergative alignment in ancient and modern Indo-Aryan languages written by well-established expert authors. The articles provide detailed explorations of language-specific synchronic systems or patterns of change, and large-scale studies of the distribution of ergative morphosyntax across the Indo-Aryan languages. The papers have a typological-functional approach and are based on thorough fieldwork experience and/or philological investigation. As the Indo-Aryan language family has played a paramount role in recent theories of Ergativity and of alignment typology and change, this volume is highly relevant to experts working on these languages and to scholars interested in grammatical relations and it will figure in all future debates in these fields

Book Argument Structure in Hindi

Download or read book Argument Structure in Hindi written by Tara Mohanan and published by Center for the Study of Language and Information Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for a conception of linguistic organisation involving the factorisation of syntactically relevant information into at least four parallel dimensions of structure: semantic structure, argument structure, grammatical function structure, and grammatical category structure. The author argues that these dimensions are co-present, being simultaneously accessible for the statement of regularities. Different principles of grammar may either reinforce one another, or conflict with one another. The observed facts of a language then turn out to be the result of interaction among the reinforcing and conflicting principles. Tara Mohanan was born in Kerala, India, spent her childhood in various parts of Northern India, and grew up speaking both Malayalam and Hindi as a mother tongue. Tara now lives in Singapore with her husband and daughter, and teaches linguistics at the National University of Singapore.

Book Xp Adjunction in Universal Grammar Scrambling and Binding in Hindi Urdu

Download or read book Xp Adjunction in Universal Grammar Scrambling and Binding in Hindi Urdu written by New Delhi Ayesha Kidwai Assistant Professor of Linguistics Jawaharlal Nehru University and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000-04-10 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most hotly debated phenomena in natural language is that of leftward argument scrambling. This book investigates the properties of Hindi-Urdu scrambling to show that it must be analyzed as uniformly a focality-driven XP-adjunction operation. It proposes a novel theory of binding and coreference that not only derives the coreference effects in scrambled constructions, but has important consequences for the proper formulation of binding, crossover, reconstruction, and representational economy in the minimalist program. The book will be of interest not only to specialists in Hindi-Urdu syntax and/or scrambling, but to all students of generative syntax.
