Book Morpho physiological Studies For Drought Adaptation In Wheat

Download or read book Morpho physiological Studies For Drought Adaptation In Wheat written by Dipendra Pokharel and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the most important cereal crop for global food supply. Most of the wheat crop in developing countries including Nepal is either grown rainfed condition or under limited irrigation condition, thus water stress hits the wheat crop at different growth stages which thus limiting the grain yield. An experiment with 60 different genotypes of wheat was carried out in Nepal for the characterization for drought adaptation. The ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) revealed significant variation between environments and among the wheat germplasms for most of the drought adaptive traits. A wide range of variability was observed for the selected drougt adaptive morpho-physiological traits in moisture stressed and non-stressed environments. WUE was highly significantly correlated with biomass production. Nepalese cultivar Gautam showed a number of favorable drought adaptive traits. A number of landraces and advanced breeding lines showed high level of water use efficiency and other positive traits for drought adaptation.

Book Advances in Photosynthesis Research

Download or read book Advances in Photosynthesis Research written by C. Sybesma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Congress on Photosynthesis took place from 1 to 6 August 1983, on the Campus of the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel", in Brussels, Belgium. These Proceedings contain most of the scientific contributions offered during the Congress. The Brussels Congress was the largest thus far held in the series of International Congresses on Photosynthesis. It counted over 1100 active participants. The organizers tried to minimize the disadvantages of such a large size by making maximum use of the facili ties available on a university campus. Most contributions were offered in the form of posters which were displayed in a substantial number of classrooms. The discussion sessions, twice a day, four or five in parallel, took place in lecture rooms in the very vicinity of these classrooms. In this way it was attempted to generate the atmosphere of a small meeting. The unity of the subject Photosynthesis was preserved in the ten plenary lectures, organ1sed in such a way that a general overview of two diverse topics was given every day. In addition, there were the five times four parallel symposia dealing with some six teen general topics. Every editor of proceedings of a congress is faced with the problem of editing and arranging the contributions, a problem compounded by the wide diversity and the large number of the 753 manuscripts.

Book Plant Environment Interaction

Download or read book Plant Environment Interaction written by Mohamed Mahgoub Azooz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in global population, urbanization and industrialization is resulting in the conversion of cultivated land into wasteland. Providing food from these limited resources to an ever-increasing population is one of the biggest challenges that present agriculturalists and plant scientists are facing. Environmental stresses make this situation even graver. Plants on which mankind is directly or indirectly dependent exhibit various mechanisms for their survival. Adaptability of the plants to changing environment is a matter of concern for plant biologists trying to reach the goal of food security. Despite the induction of several tolerance mechanisms, sensitive plants often fail to withstand these environmental extremes. Using new technological approaches has become essential and imperative. Plant-Environment Interaction: Responses and Approaches to Mitigate Stress throws light on the changing environment and the sustainability of plants under these conditions. It contains the most up-to-date research and comprehensive detailed discussions in plant physiology, climate change, agronomy and forestry, sometimes from a molecular point of view, to convey in-depth understanding of the effects of environmental stress in plants, their responses to the environment, how to mitigate the negative effects and improve yield under stress. This edited volume is written by expert plant biologists from around the world, providing invaluable knowledge to graduate and undergraduate students in plant biochemistry, food chemistry, plant physiology, molecular biology, plant biotechnology, and environmental sciences. This book updates scientists and researchers with the very latest information and sustainable methods used for stress tolerance, which will also be of considerable interest to plant based companies and institutions concerned with the campaign of food security.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the complex analysis of different wheat species tolerance to drought stress in¬†vivo at different levels of organization as well as in¬†vitro on callus cultures, which was conducted, are presented. The objects of research are as follows: species of wheat,ÄîT. monococum L. (Au), T. dicoccum Shuebl. (AuB), T. polonicum L. (AuB), T. aethiopicum Jakubz. (AuB), T. macha Dek.et.Men. (AuBD), T. compactum Host. (AuBD), and T. aestivum L. (AuBD). The methods of this research are physiological, biotechnological, and cytological. The focus was on nonspecific reactions of cereals to osmotic stress, and species-specific changes according to growth and anatomical and photosynthetic parameters which depend on studied species ploidy were shown. It was shown that results of testing of plant tissues in¬†vivo and in¬†vitro are comparable. It demonstrated the criterions for selection of drought-tolerant forms. Optimal selection criteria were identified, and more drought-resistant wheat species were identified.

Book Studies on Physiological Traits in Wheat Under Water Stress Condition

Download or read book Studies on Physiological Traits in Wheat Under Water Stress Condition written by Sukhada Shinde and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several morpho physiological traits are traditionally used as screening criteria for drought tolerance such as relative water content (RWC), stomatal index, water use efficiency (WUE) etc. Crop WUE can be improved by optimizing crop transpiration. Several workers have proposed carbon isotope discrimination (CID), ash content and canopy temperature depression (CTD) as selection criteria for transpiration efficiency (TE), which may serve as the surrogate measures for improvement in grain yield. To identify suitable physiological traits useful in wheat breeding under water stress environment is the major thrust area of present investigation. For this, Durum and aestivum genotypes were selected from the breeding material of ARI, Pune (MS, India).Experimental trials on Triticum durum were conducted under three different water regimes viz. residual soil moisture stress (RSMS), post anthesis water stress (PAWS) as limited irrigation (LI) and well watered (WW) conditions.Data were collected for agronomical and physiological characters. Soil water balance model 'BUDGET' (Raes et.al. 2006) has been used for deriving WUE using meteorological, rainfall and irrigation data of (2004-05)and(2006)

Book Improving Drought Tolerance in Wheat with Physiological and Molecular Tools

Download or read book Improving Drought Tolerance in Wheat with Physiological and Molecular Tools written by Surya Laxmi Shrestha and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought is a limiting factor for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the low precipitation regions of the Pacific Northwest (PNW). To improve wheat performance in drought, this study focused on three main objectives. Our first objective was to determine water use efficiency (WUE) in the PNW wheat lines through carbon isotope discrimination (CID) technique. Genotypic variation of CID was found in soft spring and hard winter wheat lines. Low CID or high WUE was found important for increasing yield of soft spring wheat lines in drought and semi-drought environments but not in other wheat types. The second objective of this study was to determine important physiological traits associated with yield. Fifteen spring wheat, 140 Alpowa/Express (AE) recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and 165 Hollis/Drysdale (HD) RILs, were evaluated in replicated field trials in two moisture environments, rainfed and irrigated, in different years. The wheat materials were screened for physiological (CT, CID, FLS: Flag leaf senescence), agronomic and phenological traits. The low canopy temperature (CT) was consistently associated with high yield in all wheat lines. The study found that CT was the main driver of wheat adaptation in drought in studied environmental conditions. Our third objective was to identify genomic regions associated with the studied traits through quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping. In the AE population, yield and test weight QTL were identified on chromosome 1B in the irrigated environments but none of the QTL for physiological traits was found in this chromosomal region. The major QTL associated with yield and CT (at milking), which explained 15 and 22% of the phenotypic variation, were found on chromosome 3B in terminal drought environment. In the HD population, two QTL associated with yield were identified on chromosomes 2A and 4A in averaged rainfed environments in which yield QTL on chromosome 4A explained 35% of the phenotypic variation. These QTL for yield were associated with later FLS. Through the genetic dissection of yield into component traits, this study may help to incorporate quantitative traits into wheat drought breeding programs through marker-assisted selection.
