Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have states in the Middle East and North Africa responded to the War on Terror? While much scholarship has focused on terrorism in the region, there is need for critical studies of Middle Eastern states' counter-terrorism policies. This book addresses that need by investigating Morocco's unique approach to counter-terrorism: the bureaucratization of religion. Morocco's strategy is unique in the degree to which it relies on reforms that seek to make the country's religious institutions into tools for rewarding loyalty and discouraging dissent from religious elites. Through these measures they have limited opposition through an enduring form of institutional control, accommodating some of the country's most virulent critics. This book will be of great use to researchers and scholars of Middle Eastern politics, and it will also appeal to those policymakers interested in security studies and counter-terrorism policies.

Book The War on Terror and Moroccan American Relations

Download or read book The War on Terror and Moroccan American Relations written by Majda Moutchou and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major purposes of my study is to extract the systematic features of the terrorist incidents of 9/11 and 5/16, and try to get the lessons. Knowing what happened on a given occasion is not sufficient by itself. If we make no effort to extract the systematic features of the subject; the lessons of history will be lost, and we will learn nothing about what aspects of our subject are likely to persist or to be relevant to future events or studies.

Book Terrorism in Africa

Download or read book Terrorism in Africa written by John Davis and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study, Terrorism in Africa: The Evolving Front in the War on Terrorism, represents a research endeavor aimed at increasing scholarly discourse on the ever-expanding threat of terrorism and terrorist-related violence in the region. It offers the most wide-ranging analysis of the sub-national and transnational terrorists groups that have made Africa the second most violent region in the world. Additionally, the study expands the coverage of the multiple dynamics that indicate why terrorist-related violence continues to increase in the region and closes with regional solutions to the threat of terrorism. This collection of essays offers a comprehensive analysis of the states, terrorist groups, and critical issues that have increased the specter of terrorism in Africa. The study is divided into three themes: (1) the diversity of the terrorist threat among states in the region, (2) the regional dynamics and the local response to terrorism, and (3) regional solutions to the threat of terrorism in Africa.

Book Morocco s Comprehensive Strategy Against Terrorism

Download or read book Morocco s Comprehensive Strategy Against Terrorism written by Othman Meziane and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Arab Spring protest movements in the Middle East and North Africa, ignited socio-political protests in the Kingdom of Morocco, threatening domestic stability. Morocco considers terrorism its greatest security concern. Extremists appeal to Moroccan nationals to commit attacks inside the country and abroad using sophisticated and high technology radicalization process. In addition, the ongoing chaos in the MENA region has increased terrorists' capability to recruit among Moroccans, as they seek to expand their activities inside the Kingdom. The perception of terrorism as a common dominator to MENA countries hinders economic growth in both Morocco and the region. Nevertheless, the Kingdom is still considered as a terror-free country, an exception in the region, thanks to its efficient and comprehensive counterterrorism program combining an efficient security strategy, a promising human development program, as well as a strict control of religious affairs. This paper covers not only the Moroccan government's use of force and material barriers, and its attention to the grievances of the unemployed and alienated youth, but also its programs to counter-act the ideology of radicals and terrorists. The discussion of the counter-radicalization campaign demonstrates the value of the Moroccan approach. This paper deserves recognition for its thorough consideration of the Moroccan counter-terrorism strategy. It acknowledges the past failures and continuing problems facing the Moroccan government."--Abstract.

Book Mental Health in the War on Terror

Download or read book Mental Health in the War on Terror written by Neil K. Aggarwal and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Krishan Aggarwal's timely study finds that mental-health and biomedical professionals have created new forms of knowledge and practice in their desire to understand and fight terrorism. In the process, the state has used psychiatrists and psychologists to furnish knowledge on undesirable populations, and psychiatrists and psychologists have protected state interests. Professional interpretation, like all interpretations, is subject to cultural forces. Drawing on cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology, Aggarwal analyzes the transformation of definitions for normal and abnormal behavior in a vast array of sources: government documents, professional bioethical debates, legal motions and opinions, psychiatric and psychological scholarship, media publications, and policy briefs. Critical themes emerge on the use of mental health in awarding or denying disability to returning veterans, characterizing the confinement of Guantánamo detainees, contextualizing the actions of suicide bombers, portraying Muslim and Arab populations in psychiatric and psychological scholarship, illustrating bioethical issues in the treatment of detainees, and supplying the knowledge and practice to deradicalize terrorists. Throughout, Aggarwal explores this fascinating, troublesome transformation of mental-health science into a potential instrument of counterterrorism.

Book War and Insurgency in the Western Sahara

Download or read book War and Insurgency in the Western Sahara written by Geoffrey Jensen and published by Military Bookshop. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a crucial crossroads between Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and the "Arab World" and the West, Morocco has long had a special place in U.S. diplomacy and strategic planning. Since September 11, 2001, Morocco's importance to the United States has only increased, and the more recent uncertainties of the Arab Spring and Islamist extremism have further increased the value of the Moroccan-American alliance. Yet one of the pillars of the legitimacy of the Moroccan monarchy, its claim to the Western Sahara, remains a point of violent contention. Home to the largest functional military barrier in the world, the Western Sahara has a long history of colonial conquest and resistance, guerrilla warfare and counterinsurgency, and evolving strategic thought, and its future may prove critical to U.S. interests in the region.

Book Terrorism in the Maghreb

Download or read book Terrorism in the Maghreb written by Anneli Botha and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism on the African continent is a complex and emotional topic. One of the primary reasons for this is that a historical introspection for any country, or its people, that has been confronted with a conflicting past can only be described as 'sensitive'. In addition to international developments and challenges, domestic circumstances predominately fuel domestic terrorism. It will therefore be a mistake to assess the threat of terrorism in any country in historic isolation. This is particularly true when one tries to assess and understand the 'renewed' threat of terrorism in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. This monograph will attempt to place the threat and implication of the name change announcement of the Salafist Group for Combat and Preaching (GSPC) to al-Qa'eda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb (AQLIM) in context, with the primary focus on events in 2007. The name change in itself implied that the original domestic group had transnational ambitions, but what influenced this development and what would the consequences be? Although this development led to immediate and extensive international interest in the Maghreb, it became clear that most assessments focused on the now, without appreciating the historical complexities that ultimately led to this development.
