Book excerpt: "Mohamed Choukri (1935-2003) is one of the most important writers of modern Moroccan literature. Illiterate until the age of 20, he grew up speaking darijah, the spoken dialect of Moroccan Arabic, and spent his childhood in extreme poverty in Tangiers. After learning to read, he wrote works that changed modern Arab literature. His works include characters based on people he knew who lived in worlds rarely featured in literature. At the same time, he connected with the writers Paul Bowles (an early translator), Tennessee Williams, and Jean Genet, among many others. Faces, published in Arabic in 1996 and never before translated into English, is the third in his most famous trilogy, weaving together autobiography and fiction. His novel invites the reader to experience the places and events of his life through the eyes of a local, and paints a picture of daily life for all kinds of people. Like in life, he describes gritty events; abject poverty, prostitution, violence, sexual revelry, deprivation, and abuse almost casually. It is through these topics and his storytelling style that Choukri reflects on human nature, love, and kindness. He elevates and humanizes those undergoing poverty, places the blame for the violence they undergo squarely on colonial forces and then the resulting postcolonial government, and emphasizes the importance of community and collaboration. "I saw that writing could also be a way to expose, to protest against those who have stolen my childhood, my teenage-hood and a piece of my youthfulness," said Choukri. "At that moment, my writing became committed." His vivid portrayals of marginalized people, considered a taboo, led to censorship from 1983 to 2000 and a cultural backlash in the Arab world, which resulted in Faces being published late and not being translated before his death. Elbousty's elegant translation stays faithful to Choukri's writing and promises to remind readers of his importance and to bring him attention not just in Morocco but in discussions of contemporary Arab literature around the globe"--

Book excerpt: Faces By: Lucy Miller Murray Lucy Miller Murray’s novel Faces is a romantic love story edged with tragedy when Angelica’s young husband David is disfigured in an accident. Essential to the story is the different ways in which the two are affected by the event. The tale opens in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a community divided by a river, where the couple first meet as music students. It then moves to Philadelphia where they reencounter each other in graduate school and to Italy where they explore the beauties of Florence but also experience their tragedy. Weaving its way through the novel is the couple’s common love of music, a significant focus in the book springing from Murray’s well-known career in the music world. Retiring from that world has finally given her time to spell out this tale in a poetic language enriched by her many years within it. The story is both personal and universal, making it a novel not to be missed by adventuresome readers.

Download or read book Making Faces written by Adam S. Wilkins and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans possess the most expressive faces in the animal kingdom. Adam Wilkins presents evidence ranging from the fossil record to recent findings of genetics, molecular biology, and developmental biology to reconstruct the fascinating story of how the human face evolved. Beginning with the first vertebrate faces half a billion years ago and continuing to dramatic changes among our recent human ancestors, Making Faces illuminates how the unusual characteristics of the human face came about—both the physical shape of facial features and the critical role facial expression plays in human society. Offering more than an account of morphological changes over time and space, which rely on findings from paleontology and anthropology, Wilkins also draws on comparative studies of living nonhuman species. He examines the genetic foundations of the remarkable diversity in human faces, and also shows how the evolution of the face was intimately connected to the evolution of the brain. Brain structures capable of recognizing different individuals as well as “reading” and reacting to their facial expressions led to complex social exchanges. Furthermore, the neural and muscular mechanisms that created facial expressions also allowed the development of speech, which is unique to humans. In demonstrating how the physical evolution of the human face has been inextricably intertwined with our species’ growing social complexity, Wilkins argues that it was both the product and enabler of human sociality.

Book excerpt: Electric Literature 25 Best Novels of 2014 Largehearted Boy Favorite Novels of 2014 "An extraordinary new literary talent."--The Daily Telegraph "In part a portrait of the artist as a young woman, this deceptively modest-seeming, astonishingly inventive novel creates an extraordinary intimacy, a sensibility so alive it quietly takes over all your senses, quivering through your nerve endings, opening your eyes and heart. Youth, from unruly student years to early motherhood and a loving marriage--and then, in the book's second half, wilder and something else altogether, the fearless, half-mad imagination of youth, I might as well call it—has rarely been so freshly, charmingly, and unforgettably portrayed. Valeria Luiselli is a masterful, entirely original writer."--Francisco Goldman In Mexico City, a young mother is writing a novel of her days as a translator living in New York. In Harlem, a translator is desperate to publish the works of Gilberto Owen, an obscure Mexican poet. And in Philadelphia, Gilberto Owen recalls his friendship with Lorca, and the young woman he saw in the windows of passing trains. Valeria Luiselli's debut signals the arrival of a major international writer and an unexpected and necessary voice in contemporary fiction. "Luiselli's haunting debut novel, about a young mother living in Mexico City who writes a novel looking back on her time spent working as a translator of obscure works at a small independent press in Harlem, erodes the concrete borders of everyday life with a beautiful, melancholy contemplation of disappearance. . . . Luiselli plays with the idea of time and identity with grace and intuition." —Publishers Weekly
