Young wanted to expand the foot print of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) throughout the Great Basin and the Southwest as a means of building and maintaining self-sufficiency among his followers. Mormon settlers had only just arrived when they experienced a succession of conflicts with other groups of settlers in the area, which lasted more than a decade and seemed to escalate in intensity over time. These episodes were complex. They mirrored social and political rivalries all too familiar throughout the nineteenth-century American West, yet also reflected the religious tensions that pervaded American society in the Gilded Age. Disputes between Mormons and Gentiles in Arizona can be viewed in the larger context of a nationwide clash between American culture and Mormonism that proved to be one of the defining issues of the era. We can study them as a microcosm of this larger national conflict. The "Mormon Question" pervaded Victorian American politics as Protestant activists sought to eradicate what they considered un-American and immoral practices within Mormon society, including polygamy, theocracy, and a cloistered community. The national crusade against Mormonism and the widespread hostility it engendered influenced the local conflicts in Arizona.

Drawing on a large-scale national study of four generations of current and former Mormons as well as dozens of in-depth personal interviews, Riess explores the religious beliefs and behaviors of young adult Mormons, finding that while their levels of belief remain strong, their institutional loyalties are less certain than their parents' and grandparents'.
