Book excerpt: Morien (also Moriaen or Moriaan) is a 13th-century Arthurian romance written in Middle Dutch, contained within the Lancelot-Compilatie of unknown authorship. It was translated into English by the independent scholar, medievalist and folklorist Jessie Laidlay Weston, and originally published in 1901. This beautiful story is focused around Morien, the Moorish son of Aglovale, one of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. It begins with Morien searching for his father after being disinherited from his lands with his mother. The story takes place before the quest for the Holy Grail, and is synchronised around Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval and Lancelot-Grail stories, whilst Sirs Lancelot and Gawain are out searching for Percival (Morien's uncle). Lancelot and and Gawain decide to help Morien look for his father, and together the knights go on a series of adventures.
