Having been blessed with natural wonders-from the pristine Lake James and the Catawba River to the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights and the Linville Gorge-Burke County has attracted people of all walks of life for centuries. Morganton and Burke County is a celebratory volume that expresses the fascinating storied past of this county, its seat, and the friendly residents who have called them home. Approximately 200 black-and-white photographs, combined with informative captions, revisit the days when the communities within Burke County were just beginning to sprout and chronicle the memorable events, important personalities, and significant architecture that helped to sculpt today's county. Scenes of dirt roads lined with horses and buggies rather than automobiles and varied views of the long-standing Burke County courthouse are just a few of the images that will no doubt spark the memories of longtime residents, while allowing members of the younger generations to marvel at the way this Tarheel county once looked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times Bestseller Set in the Appalachian wilderness and blending legends and folklore with high suspense, this stellar novel, The Ballad of Frankie Silver, is considered one of McCrumb's crowning achievements. In 1833 Frankie Silver was an eighteen-year-old girl convicted of murder in Burke County, North Carolina. Through a detailed investigation, the local sheriff, and soon all the townsfolk, discover reason to question her guilt---but the wheels of justice were mercilessly unstoppable, and she was hanged. Now, more than a century later, another woman is convicted of murder in the lush hills of Tennessee. Her life is in the hands of Spencer Arrowood, a man who begins to discover that the convictions of these two women have deep and haunting parallels. Although Frankie's fate cannot be changed, there is still time to alter the fate of another innocent woman. In a voice that could only be Sharyn McCrumb's, the worlds of these two murders, these two women, intersect in this densely plotted and lyrical novel—and characters, generations, and history are breathlessly painted against an Appalachian canvas.

Book The Maya of Morganton

Download or read book The Maya of Morganton written by Leon Fink and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-10-11 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, Leon Fink published his oral history of Guatemalan and Mexican migrants in Morganton, North Carolina, and their fight for unionization in a poultry processing plant. In the following years, Fink remained in touch with many of the people he profiled in the book, and in 2022 he returned to Morganton to interview them and talk with their children, new migrants in the area, and community leaders, particularly women. Their conversations covered a wide range of topics, including labor struggles and victories, grassroots and electoral political organizing, social activism (especially on issues affecting undocumented migrants), class mobility for second-generation migrants, and new cooperative worker-owned institutions, including a bookstore, a textile factory, and a preschool. This revised and expanded edition of The Maya of Morganton reveals what Fink found on his return to Morganton, documenting two decades of continuity and change in a new preface and chapter. Together, the new and original material present a comprehensive yet intimate examination of the migrant experience in western North Carolina.

  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book The Church Cracked Open written by Stephanie Spellers and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book will make a profound difference for the church in this moment in history." — The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry Sometimes it takes disruption and loss to break us open and call us home to God. It’s not surprising that a global pandemic and once-in-a-generation reckoning with white supremacy—on top of decades of systemic decline—have spurred Christians everywhere to ask who we are, why God placed us here and what difference that makes to the world. In this critical yet loving book, the author explores the American story and the Episcopal story in order to find out how communities steeped in racism, establishment, and privilege can at last fall in love with Jesus, walk humbly with the most vulnerable and embody beloved community in our own broken but beautiful way. The Church Cracked Open invites us to surrender privilege and redefine church, not just for the sake of others, but for our own salvation and liberation.

Book Broughton Hospital

    Book Details:

  • ISBN : 9781094657394
  • Pages : 56 pages

Download or read book Broughton Hospital written by Larry Richard Clark and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broughton Hospital is a product of history, and to follow its story is to discover an engaging tale about the dramatic changes in public mental health services and treatments in the United States and North Carolina. Today, Broughton is facing another chapter in its 134 year history as it prepares to move into a new facility only a few hundred yards from its original campus. Beyond this exciting event, a proposed 10-year "Broughton District Master Plan" envisions a project of 800 acres involving the City of Morganton, County of Burke, other state agencies and a western N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, a two-year residential high school to compliment the NCSSM in Durham. With all of this happening around the old Broughton Hospital and the new Broughton Hospital, one can only guess what the future holds for its continuing, outstanding service to some of the most needy people in North Carolina. "Insanity is a disease to be treated in a hospital and is in no sense a crime for which the sick man is to be sent to a prison.... Let us get rid of this idea and remember that the insane are persons with a tangible disease. -- Dr. Patrick L. Murphy, 1890

Book Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina

Download or read book Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina written by Emmett R. White and published by Southern Historical Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 1984 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions of the Revolutionary War soldiers of Western N.C. during the conflict of 1775-1782 were immense. The rolling hills of the Carolina Piedmont were as much a battleground as those of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Kings Mountain, Ramsour's Mill, Cowpens, the Indian Wars, and many other conflicts all helped to change the course of American history. Unfortunately, from a historical standpoint, very little written data is available concerning the contributions of the Western N.C. Militiamen. Many of the western counties, though their soldiers contributed greatly to the war effort, are historically "silent". This work is an effort to unravel and to present in a systematic way something about their lives and exploits. The initial two volume will be devoted to Burke County. Each soldier will be written up to his early life (as much as could be made available), his military experiences, his later life, including marriages, children, occupations, etc. Also included will be his land transactions and census locations. Where available, burial sites will be given as well as pension awards. Following completion of the Burke County editions, similar works will begin on the remaining Western North Carolina counties. Early research is now in progress for Wilkes, Surry, Rowan, Mecklenburg, Lincoln, and Rutherford counties.

Book The Last Rosenwald School of Burke County North Carolina An Historic Gem Recognized

This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first publication to present the Rosenwald Schools of Burke County, NC. With five schools built, Burke County was a full participant in the historic Rosenwald Movement that improved so many lives, families and communities across the South. The historic Rosenwald (Canal) School still stands in Lake James’ Bridgewater community, west of Morganton. A legacy of the Corpening family of pioneer educators that served Burke for over 25 years, it is the last surviving complete structure to represent Burke's early African-American schools. The discovery of an extant Rosenwald school provides an opportunity to document, or preserve, a structure representing the educational achievements of early African-American citizens. (In 2015, this work received an Award of Excellence from the North Carolina Society of Historians. In 2016, the Burke County Commissioners installed a permanent exhibit at the History Museum of Burke County to commemorate the county's five Rosenwald schools.)
