Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ronnie has overcome a heart-breaking start in life to achieve great success and no one deserves it more. What a dude, what a life!' - Fiona Bruce 'Brilliant...a mercurial memoir of a meritorious life.' - Lemn Sissay For decades, Ronnie Archer-Morgan has brought to life the fascinating, often surprising backstories behind our most cherished heirlooms and household objects on the Antiques Roadshow. Now, he tells his own unlikely story. Born in the fifties to a Sierra Leonean mother battling mental health problems, Ronnie spent his childhood in and out of care. After difficult beginnings, marked by abuse, racism and brushes with both criminals and the police, he got into music, managing to get DJ gigs and, later, worked as a celebrity hairdresser for Vidal Sassoon and Smile in the height of seventies London. A flair for spotting antiques led him to start his own Knightsbridge gallery, ultimately becoming one of the most respected figures in the industry, culminating in a regular spot as an expert on the nation's Sunday favourite, Antiques Roadshow. Told with rich warmth, this is an extraordinary journey from deprivation and abuse to adventure and success against the odds - with stories of the incredible objects which shaped the way. 'A surprising story, like many of the objects he appraises on the Antiques Roadshow' - Kate Adie, broadcaster and bestselling author 'A fascinating, rollercoaster read, very well told.' - Times

Download or read book These Bodies written by Morgan Christie and published by Tolsun Books. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Short Stories. African & African American Studies. THESE BODIES, a collection of eleven stories by Morgan Christie, explores the complexities of relationships, specifically those of people of color. Each story highlights the subtleties and undercurrents of the life of a unique protagonist. Championing underrepresented stories, loves, trials, and bodies, Christie's debut full-length book is one of depth, of passion, of fear, and of joy. "Reading Morgan Christie's debut collection is like falling into a dream, animal life and the occasional fantastical element peeking through a curtain of painful human reality. Christie's voice is precise throughout, modern and emotionally astute, her characters filled with longing, forced while at various crossroads to reconcile vices and failings--large and small--with their hopes for a better world."--Karen Palmer "THESE BODIES serves as an almost unnerving reflection of what it means to be human, to the point that every reader will be able to recognize some part of themselves within these pages, whether it's the need for understanding, the desperation of a second chance, or the lies we acknowledge but rarely have the courage to truly face. Written with empathy, subtlety, and just a little bit of magic, Christie is one of those writers whose stories will randomly pop into your head, seemingly unprovoked, for years to come."--MK Roney "One of the best short story collections I've read in a while. Christie skillfully crafts characters so real, you can feel their hearts beating through the pages. The stories in THESE BODIES are an honest and relatable look at the multifaceted human experience, something we need in the world now more than ever."--Racquel Henry

But Julie and Hank’s new life in the valley, in the last years of the nineteenth century, is more complicated than the couple ever imagined. Download or read book A Touch of Jen written by Beth Morgan and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young couple's toxic Instagram crush spins out of control and unleashes a sinister creature in this twisted, viciously funny, "bananas good" story (Carmen Maria Machado). "Um, holy shit...This novel will be the most fun you'll have this summer." —Emily Temple, Literary Hub Remy and Alicia, a couple of insecure service workers, are not particularly happy together. But they are bound by a shared obsession with Jen, a beautiful former co-worker of Remy’s who now seems to be following her bliss as a globe-trotting jewelry designer. In and outside the bedroom, Remy and Alicia's entire relationship revolves around fantasies of Jen, whose every Instagram caption, outfit, and new age mantra they know by heart. Imagine their confused excitement when they run into Jen, in the flesh, and she invites them on a surfing trip to the Hamptons with her wealthy boyfriend and their group. Once there, Remy and Alicia try (a little too hard) to fit into Jen’s exalted social circle, but violent desire and class resentment bubble beneath the surface of this beachside paradise, threatening to erupt. As small disturbances escalate into outright horror, we find ourselves tumbling with Remy and Alicia into an uncanny alternate reality, one shaped by their most unspeakable, deviant, and intoxicating fantasies. Is this what “self-actualization” looks like? Part millennial social comedy, part psychedelic horror, and all wildly entertaining, A Touch of Jen is a sly, unflinching examination of the hidden drives that lurk just outside the frame of our carefully curated selves.

Download or read book Shackles Across Time written by Odie Hawkins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shackles Across Time traces the history of a curse, of a spiritual fatwa, in a sense, on an African slave traders family in West Africa, and the subsequent effect of that curse on the family, over the course of three centuries. Modern technology helps the descendants to realize that something is not cool with their spiritual DNA, but they must use olfashioned means to cope with the problem. They engage the services of a well-known writer (a case of serendipity, he has written about their family in his book about the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade). The mediator is called an okyeame. The okyeame meets with the descendants of the man who pronounced the curse and unfortunately, must undergo the spiritual cleansing necessary for him to be taken seriously. His life is changed by his ordeal. It is also instrumental in having the curse lifted from the African slave traders descendants.

Download or read book Inevitable Surprises written by Peter Schwartz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world we live in today is more volatile than ever. The security of free nations is threatened by rogue states, the global economy is in flux, and the rapid advance of technology forces constant reevaluation of our society. With so many powerful forces at work and seemingly unpredictable events occurring, to many the future seems dark, and its possibilities frightening. Peter Schwartz disagrees. A world-renowned visionary in the field of scenario planning, Schwartz’s startling—and accurate— predictions have been employed by government agencies and major corporations for more than twenty-five years. He argues that the future is foreseeable, and that by examining the dynamics at work today we can predict the “inevitable surprises” of tomorrow. Timely and thought-provoking, Inevitable Surprises is a book that no one with an interest in business—or the future of our society—can afford to miss.
