Download or read book Morgan written by Jean Strouse and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER The definitive full-scale portrait of J. Pierpont Morgan’s tumultuous life, both in and out of the public eye History has remembered him as a complex and contradictory figure, part robber baron and part patron saint. J. Pierpont Morgan earned his reputation as “the Napoleon of Wall Street” by reorganizing the nation’s railroads and creating industrial giants such as General Electric and U.S. Steel. At a time when the country had no Federal Reserve system, he appointed himself a one-man central bank. He had two wives, three yachts, four children, six houses, mistresses, and one of the finest art collections in America. In this extraordinary book, drawing extensively on new material, award-winning biographer Jean Strouse vividly portrays the financial colossus, the avid patron of the arts, and the entirely human character behind all the myths. Praise for Morgan “Magnificent . . . the fullest and most revealing look at this remarkable, complex man that we are likely to get.”—The Wall Street Journal “A masterpiece . . . No one else has told the tale of Pierpont Morgan in the detail, depth, and understanding of Jean Strouse.”—Robert Heilbroner, Los Angeles Times Book Review “It is hard to imagine a biographer coming any closer to perfection.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Strouse is in full command of Pierpont Morgan’s personal life, his financial operations, his collecting, and his benefactions, and presents a rich, vivid picture of the background against which they took place. . . . A magnificent biography.”—The New York Review of Books “With uncommon intelligence, maturity, and psychological insight, Morgan: American Financier is that rare masterpiece biography that enables us to penetrate the soul of a complex human being.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

Download or read book Arizona s Deadliest Gunfight written by Heidi J. Osselaer and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cold winter morning, Jeff Power was lighting a fire in his remote Arizona cabin when he heard a noise, grabbed his rifle, and walked out the front door. Someone in the dark shouted, “Throw up your hands!” Shots rang out from inside and outside the cabin, and when it was all over, Jeff’s sons, Tom and John, emerged to find the sheriff and his two deputies dead, and their father mortally wounded. Arizona’s deadliest shoot-out happened not in 1881, but in 1918 as the United States plunged into World War I, and not in Tombstone, but in a remote canyon in the Galiuro Mountains northeast of Tucson. Whereas previous accounts have portrayed the gun battle as a quintessential western feud, historian Heidi J. Osselaer explodes that myth and demonstrates how the national debate over U.S. entry into the First World War divided society at its farthest edges, creating the political and social climate that lead to this tragedy. A vivid, thoroughly researched account, Arizona’s Deadliest Gunfight describes an impoverished family that wanted nothing to do with modern civilization. Jeff Power had built his cabin miles from the nearest settlement, yet he could not escape the federal government’s expanding reach. The Power men were far from violent criminals, but Jeff had openly criticized the Great War, and his sons had failed to register for the draft. To separate fact from dozens of false leads and conspiracy theories, Osselaer traced the Power family’s roots back several generations, interviewed descendants of the shoot-out’s participants, and uncovered previously unknown records. What happened to Tom and John Power afterward is as stirring and tragic a story as the gunfight itself. Weaving together a family-based local history with national themes of wartime social discord, rural poverty, and dissent, Arizona’s Deadliest Gunfight will be the authoritative account of the 1918 incident and the memorable events that unfolded in its wake.

Book excerpt: For real lovers of Jane Austen "s work, a completion of her unfinished Sanditon as she might possibly have envisaged it herself. No zombies or other anachronistic gimmicks, but a number of interlaced love stories set against a gently satirical picture of the fads and fancies of the times, above all the rising fashion for sea bathing and the greed and folly that accompanied it.When Charlotte Heywood leaves her large and conservative family of Kentish landowners to stay with the Parkers in the new resort of Sanditon, she expects nothing more than a tranquil seaside holiday. She soon however becomes involved in the life of the little town, and is challenged to measure her own traditional values and tastes against those of financial speculators, affected social climbers, fashionable hypochondriacs, and followers of the new romantic ideas in the arts and human behaviour. Her initial attitude is that of an amused spectator, but soon, to her own surprise, she finds herself falling in love with her host "s younger brother, the witty and fascinating Sidney Parker. Sidney however leaves Sanditon abruptly in the company of Charlotte "s beautiful and enigmatic friend Clara Brereton, with whom Sir Edward Denham, penniless nephew of the town "s patroness and Sgreat lady , is in love, to his avaricious aunt "s displeasure, and the town buzzes with rumours of an elopement Anne Toledo has taught English Literature at university level for many years, specialising in the nineteenth-century novel in general, and in Jane Austen in particular. She is a devoted Janeite, and hopes that this story will appeal to those who share her love and appreciation of Jane Austen "s work at all levels “ as romance, as humorous observation, and as moral satire, and also as a fascinating picture of daily life in middle-class England in the years immediately following the Napoleonic wars.

He marries twice and shares children with both of his wives. His first wife never loved him. She only wanted the money. But his second wife, whose faith was strong in God, loved him through it all, hard and unconditionally. Carnegie also suffers off and on, dealing with three mental illnesses, multiple personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and paranoid schizophrenia. Even though his wife and mother prayed consistently to God and needed him too, he still didn't believe in a God that would make someone mentally ill. Ordered to do another job, Carnegie kills a young boy's father, not knowing that he would soon grow up to avenge his father's death. The young man vowed that if he ever saw Carnegie again, he would kill him. Years later, tables turn. His past finally catches up to him, and near tragedy strikes hard, leaving his wife in the hospital with a 10 percent survival rate from a bullet taken in the chest that was meant for him. Feeling helpless, not knowing if his wife will make it through the night, Carnegie puts his differences aside and turns to God for the first time, hoping that his prayers will be answered.
Download or read book We ve Been There written by Susan TeBos and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candid, unfiltered stories about how it feels to be a teen adoptee The teen years are full of uncomfortable self-discovery for everyone. But adopted teens grapple with issues that make the coming of age journey immensely more difficult. Many don't have words for what they're feeling, sensing, or believing about themselves. They often don't have anyone like them to help them work through their struggles. Forced to cope on their own, they end up feeling isolated. Adoption advocate and adoptive mom Susan TeBos has watched her own children go through these struggles. Often she wished for a voice that would resonate with adopted teens--her own and others--and authentically meet them where they are. She found not one voice, but many: over thirty adopted teens and young adults. We've Been There gathers their stories, giving readers a front row seat to people with similar stories and feelings. This book is an unprecedented glimpse into the unfiltered feelings, thoughts, experiences, and unanswered questions that well up in the heart of every person with adoption in their story. From people who have been there as adopted kids, this book not only invites adopted teens to bring their concerns into the open, but also helps them process how they feel and offers them hope on the other side. In these pages, teen adoptees will understand themselves in a whole new way and find reassurance and a sense of belonging as part of a global adopted community.
Download or read book I ve Been through Hell Trying to Make It Up to Heaven written by Alida Jai Rogers and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you like to have your funeral at any place you wanted? Well, in this book, you will see what my uncle did. He was a major coach. What is a major coach? Well, that is where you coach literally everything: basketball, baseball, track, football, martial arts, swimming, golf, and dancing lessons. He tutored adults and children and worked a regular job. Lazy wasn't a word he knew. What better way than to go out the way you lived your life? I personally thought it was very cool. My uncle's funeral was on the track and football field where over three hundred people attended to celebrate and paid their respects. It made my father feel like he was putting on a gospel celebrity concert that he waited for all his life. Lord Jesus help us. If only Erica from Mary Mary would have just given my father a solo at their church. My beautiful great-aunt had us join a procession at the funeral as if it was a wedding. We sat in white chairs on the football field as if we were holding a presidential election. He was just that special. My uncle's only daughter's wedding colors were purple and white. And she wanted to honor him by the family wearing those colors since he would not be here to walk her down the aisle. My father felt like this was his time to shine. He didn't have to shine that much to make us go viral. We were embarrassed. We had just seen Kobe and his daughter buried the day before. I was grateful for the tribute they gave to all nine lives that were lost. Everyone was watching at the airport. We were delayed due to the fog. After watching the funeral, no one complained about the fog again. I flew all the way from St. Louis. I couldn't miss my uncle's funeral. Who would have thought the world would shut down five weeks later? I say God is trying to tell us all something. With me being six months pregnant, and bleeding for five of those six months, I believed it would be a double funeral. God said, "You both shall live," yet the devil was trying to take me out. I believe in my heart that this book will show you that no matter your skin color, we are the same. Even if your faith is paper thin, this book is for you. Religion shouldn't be anyone's cup of tea. Even in the COVID pandemic, Jesus has never left us nor forsaken us. His blood is why we breathe. Now that's love. That should be our cup of tea. Not religion.

The humming of the Silence is her secret, even from her beloved father, as is the day that she walks along a cobweb. But with adolescence comes a loss of childhood innocence and the intrusion into her perfect world of an unwanted stepmother and baby sister. These loud and chaotic presences, together with an act, as she perceives it, of unwarranted violence by her father, have a traumatic effect on Morgan. Sent by her father to get help-for the family has been trapped in a fall-out shelter for days-Morgan, a dwarf, goes instead on an odyssey into the unknown, seemingly hostile, world outside her home. Mourning the disappearance of magic from her life and realising for the first time that she is physically deformed, Morgan learns that only through love can she regain her empathy with the Silence and the ability to transcend the boundaries that enclose other people. In this, her first novel published in 1986, Sara Banerji has created a work of startling originality and beauty. Full of vivid images, Cobweb Walking is a perceptive story about shattered childhood dreams and the painful awakening to self-awareness.
