Book Pilgrim

Download or read book Pilgrim written by JFK Miller and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘To walk the Kokoda Track is to undertake two journeys. The first starts at Owers’ Corner and undulates through 96 kilometres of primary jungle over the Owen Stanley Range until you reach the village of Kokoda on the other side. This journey is ordinarily taken in the company of others and with a backpack, which you may hire a porter to carry for you if you wish. The second journey began the moment you were born. It brings to the track baggage of a different kind. This you must carry yourself, and the journey you must make alone.’ So begins JFK Miller’s account of his ten-day jungle trek along Papua New Guinea’s Kokoda Track. The journey was effectively two journeys. The external journey was the physical ten-day trek over the track. The internal journey was the emotional aspect, including what Miller brought to the experience — the mental illness of depression — and what he gained from it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within 24 hours of the Japanese invasion of northern New Guinea at Gona in July 1942, the Australian militiamen of ‘B’ Company, 39th Battalion, spent four weeks fighting a delaying action against a crack Japanese force outnumbered by three to one. By mid-August, the rest of the battalion had arrived, and these men took up a position at Isurava, in the heart of the cloud covered mountains and jungles of the Owen Stanley Range. At Isurava, this small militia force of the 39th Battalion now numbering around 300 men was determined to make a stand against a crack Japanese force of the 144th Regiment and supporting elements, numbering at least 1500. Then on the day the Japanese launched their attack, to the great relief of these militiamen, reinforcements from the 2nd AIF who had fought with great distinction in the Middle East began to arrive in the afternoon having spent days struggling up the track from Port Moresby. Even so, the Australians were still outnumbered, as the Japanese also received reinforcements, and unlike the Japanese, the Australians had no supporting artillery or medium machineguns. The battle for Isurava would be the defining battle of the Kokoda Campaign and has rightfully been described as Australia’s Thermopylae. It was here that Australia’s first Victoria Cross in the Pacific war was awarded when the Japanese conducted several ferocious attacks against the Australian perimetre. Private Bruce Kingsbury led an Australian counterattack, rushing forward sweeping the Japanese positions with his Bren gun, saving he situation when all seemed lost — he was killed leading the charge. Another two men were also nominated for the VC during the fighting at Isurava. The outnumbered and poorly equipped Australians managed to hold back the Japanese advance for almost a week; only then did these battle scared and weary men begin a month long fighting withdraw towards Ioribaiwa Ridge just north of Port Morsby. However, their sacrifice provided time for the Australian 25th Brigade to be brought forward — finally forcing the Japanese to withdrawal just as they glimpsed the lights of Port Morseby.

Book Geographic Variation in Behavior

Download or read book Geographic Variation in Behavior written by Susan A. Foster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of animal behavior often assume that all members of a species exhibit the same behavior. Geographic Variation in Behavior shows that, on the contrary, there is substantional variation within species across a wide range of taxa. Including work from pioneers in the field, this volume provides a balanced overview of research on behavioral characteristics that vary geographically. The authors explore the mechanisms by which behavioral differences evolve and examine related methodological issues. Taken together, the work collected here demonstrates that genetically based geographic variation may be far more widespread than previously suspected. The book also shows how variation in behavior can illuminate both behavioral evolution and general evolutionary patterns. Unique among books on behavior in its emphasis on geographic variation, this volume is a valuable new resource for students and researchers in animal behavior and evolutionary biology.

GREEN AMOUR is the courageous story of fighting men in the swamps and jungles of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. From the earliest days of forlorn hopes to the large-scale, well-organised attacks by land, sea, and air his terrifying first-hand account is distilled from the bloody, despairing experiences of the Australian and American forces in the early days of the Second World War... “A brilliant and exciting narrative.”—TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT “Osmar White saw more of the bloody action in New Guinea than any other reporter who has yet written about it.”—NEW YORK TIMES “Grim, realistic account of the hardships and terrors of jungle warfare."—BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION Green Armour is a story of the jungle and the sea, of man against nature, of man against man. It is the story of fighting men in the swamps and jungles of New Guinea, in the islands and atolls and tangled waterways of the Solomon Islands. Its sources were four dog-eared notebooks marked New Guinea, February-October 1942; a diary, with the U.S. Pacific Fleet, April-July 1943; a file of dispatches to Australian Newspapers; and a recollection of certain places, men and events which need no annotation to remain forever sharp in the memory. Written from a knowledge that few, if any, correspondents possessed, Green Armour is a first-hand account of war in the Pacific from the earliest days of forlorn hopes to the large-scale, well-organised attacks by land, sea and air—a taut, terrifying account, distilled from the bloody, despairing experiences of the Australian and American forces in the early years of the World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of investment, Papua New Guinea’s geographic location, geopolitical importance and abundance of commodities, as well as the success of the PNG Liquefied Natural Gas project, have helped it become a favoured destination for Chinese and Japanese ventures, with expectations of further foreign direct investment (FDI) going forward, particularly in the primary sector. However, PNG remains a challenging place for international participants, and while high-level, strategically important projects are likely to proceed smoothly, smaller, more entrepreneurial ventures may face difficulty. To improve this reputation the country is trying to boost transparency and efficiency in business transactions, though new initiatives under way could see it adopt more protectionist policies, thereby going against the tenets of liberal economics it has traditionally embraced.

Book excerpt: From Mickey to Jerry, Rizzo to Pinky, mice have played an important role in our childhood tales. Often a heroic figure in culture and fiction—mice are the iconic symbol of Disney and Earth’s intellectually superior race in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy—they are also considered one of the human race’s greatest adversaries, responsible for disease and plague. Presenting a natural and cultural history of the mouse, this book explores the large role this diminutive animal plays in both the animal kingdom and human imagination. Examining the evolution, species, habitats, and behaviors of mice, Georgie Carroll reveals that they are accomplished survivors, having colonized six of the world’s continents and even traveled into space. As one of the earth’s smallest prey, the mouse, she shows, represents courage, perseverance, and adaptability. She surveys the depiction of mice in art, myth, literature, and folklore, considering how they are held in divine regard in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Carroll also delves into the integral place mice hold within the modern scientific endeavor—that of the laboratory animal. Telling the story of this beguiling creature in rich detail, Mouse is an intriguing look at an animal we have worshipped, tested, slaughtered, loved, and loathed.

Book excerpt: `an engrossing narrative, beautifully controlled by a master storyteller' Michael McKernan, Sydney Morning Herald The bestselling, acclaimed, authoritative account of one of the most famous battles in Australian military history ? now established as a classic. For Australians, Kokoda is the iconic battle of World War II, yet few people know just what happened ? and just what our troops achieved. In his bestselling book, Peter FitzSimons tells the Kokoda story in his distinctive gripping style. Conditions on the track were hellish ? rain was constant, the terrain close to inhospitable, food and ammunition supplies were practically non-existent and the men constantly battled malaria and dysentery, as well as the Japanese. Kokoda was a defining battle for Australia ? a small force of young, ill-equipped Australians engaged a highly experienced and hitherto unstoppable Japanese force on a narrow, precarious jungle track ? and defeated them.
