It is in two volumes, with a third Considered, depending on public interest. Dire Encounters is a fiction and a work or result of my fascination with extinct megafauna of the Ice Age, admiration for the American Native Indian and my general fascination with life sciences in general. Dire Encounters has taken me seven years to write, edit, compose, illustrate, and finally publish. I hope this book inspires, entertains, educates, and moves you as it did me while writing it. This was my goal for the reader, though I started writing for Entirely different Reasons. This book is much about me as it is the characters in it and a dream of mine ... That now share digitally on virtual paper with you. The journey within the plot is filled with Christian themes as I am a Christian above all else. Book Police Selection and Training

Download or read book Police Selection and Training written by J.C. Yuille and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Police Officer During the past twenty years the tasks required of police officers have expanded and changed with dramatic rapidi ty. The tradi tional roles of the police had been those of law enforcement and the maintenance of public order. As a consequence police officers were typically large-bodied males, selected for their physical abilities and trained to accept orders and enforce the law. Over the past two decades, however, the industrialized nations have placed a variety of new demands on police officers. To traditional law enforcement and public order tasks have been added social work, mental health duties, and cORllluni ty relations work. For example, domestic disputes, violence between husbands and wives, lovers, relatives, etc. , have increased in frequency and severity (or at least there has been a dramatic increase in reporting the occurence of domestic violence). Our societies have no formal system to deal with domestic disputes and the responsibility to do so, in most countries, has fallen to the police. In fact, in some areas as many as 607. of calls for service to the police are related to domestic disputes (see the chapter in this text by Dutton). As a result the police officer has had to become a skilled social worker, able to intervene with sensi ti vi ty in domestic situations. Alternatively, in the case of West Germany, the officer has had to learn to work co-operatively with social workers (see the chapter by Steinhilper).

Especially worth mentioning are his worldwide continuous efforts in trying to realize interreligious education and interreligious learning in public schools. In his approach there is a strong emphasis on openness, dialogue, and encounter. When we are looking for an adequate vignette to characterize the contribution of this famous religious educator, a good one might be ‘religious education as encounter’. That is why this volume is systematically focusing on this topic. It brings together contributions from leading researchers in the international field of religious education adhering to a great variety of religious or worldview traditions, and it addresses a wide range of perspectives regarding the concept of encounter in religious education.

Book Borges and Me

Download or read book Borges and Me written by Jay Parini and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this evocative work of what the author in his afterword calls “a kindof novelistic memoir,” Jay Parini takes us back fifty years, when he fled the United States for Scotland—in flight from the Vietnam War and desperately in search of his adult life. There, through unlikely circumstances, he meets the famed Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges. Borges—visiting his translator in Scotland—is in his seventies, blind and frail. When Borges hears that Parini owns a 1957 Morris Minor, he declares a long-held wish to visit the Highlands, where he hopes to meet a man in Inverness who is interested in Anglo-Saxon riddles. As they travel, stopping at various sites of historical interest, the charmingly garrulous Borges takes Parini on a grand tour of Western literature and ideas, while promising to teach him about love and poetry. As Borges’s idiosyncratic world of labyrinths, mirrors, and doubles shimmers into being, their escapades take a surreal turn. Borges and Me is a classic road novel, based on true events. It’s also a magical mystery tour of an era, like our own, in which uncertainties abound, and when—as ever—it’s the young and the old who hear voices and dream dreams.

Book Foucault and Heidegger

Download or read book Foucault and Heidegger written by Alan Milchman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Foucault and Martin Heidegger are two of the most important intellectual figures of the twentieth century, and yet there are significant, largely unexplored questions about the relationship between their projects. Foucault and Heidegger stages a crucial critical encounter between these two thinkers; in doing so, it clarifies not only the complexities of the Heidegger-Foucault relationship, but also their relevance to questions about truth and nihilism, acquiescence and resistance, and technology and agency that are central to debates in contemporary thought. These essays examine topics ranging from Heidegger's and Foucault's intellectual forebears to their respective understanding of the Enlightenment, modernity, and technology, to their conceptions of power and the political.
