Book The Only Average Guy

Download or read book The Only Average Guy written by John Filion and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to go beyond the scandal and distraction of the world's most infamous local politician, and reveal what drives Rob Ford and the many voters who steadfastly support him. Eye-opening and at times frightening, The Only Average Guy cuts through the uproar that followed Ford everywhere. A journalist before entering politics, Filion peels back the layers of an extremely complicated man. Weaving together the personal and political stories, he explains how Ford's tragic weaknesses helped propel him to power before leading to his inevitable failure. Through Ford, the book also explains the growing North American phenomenon by which angry voters are attracted to outspoken candidates flaunting outrageous flaws. For fifteen years, Toronto city councillor John Filion has had an uncommon relationship with Rob Ford. Sitting two seats away from the wildly unpredictable councillor from Etobicoke, who served as mayor from 2010 to 2014, Filion formed an unlikely camaraderie that allowed him to look beyond Rob's red-faced persona, seeing a boy still longing for the approval of his father, struggling with the impossible expectations of a family that fancied itself a political dynasty.

Book ORDINARY AVERAGE GUY

Download or read book ORDINARY AVERAGE GUY written by Michael Hankins and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The derogatory term trailer trash didn't exist fifty years ago. Mobile homes were accepted by the public as respectable residences for middle-income people. After the 1980s, things suddenly changed. Living in a trailer was looked upon as a demeaning lifestyle by some members of society. I have friends that lived in house trailers while growing up. Some of them will no longer admit to such. Everyone has a story to tell. Unfortunately, some book publishers over the years have made it so only elitist celebrities get to share theirs. Their flamboyant pictures are splashed on the front of countless book and magazine covers as if these lives are the only ones that matter. I believe every person on this planet has something interesting to say, even trailer park refugees.

Book The Mirage of China

Download or read book The Mirage of China written by Xin Liu and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's world is one marked by the signs of digital capitalism and global capitalist expansion, and China is increasingly being integrated into this global system of production and consumption. As a result, China's immediate material impact is now felt almost everywhere in the world; however, the significance and process of this integration is far from understood. This study shows how the a priori categories of statistical reasoning came to be re-born and re-lived in the People's Republic - as essential conditions for the possibility of a new mode of knowledge and governance. From the ruins of the Maoist revolution China has risen through a mode of quantitative self-objectification. As the author argues, an epistemological rift has separated the Maoist years from the present age of the People's Republic, which appears on the global stage as a mirage. This study is an ethnographic investigation of concepts - of the conceptual forces that have produced and been produced by - two forms of knowledge, life, and governance. As the author shows, the world of China, contrary to the common view, is not the Chinese world; it is a symptomatic moment of our world at the present time.

Harrow, Hugo Award-winning author A paranormal romantic comedy at the (possible) end of the world. From New York Times bestselling author Gwenda Bond, Not Your Average Hot Guy is a hilarious romantic comedy about two people falling in love, while the fate of the world rests on their shoulders. All Callie wanted was a quiet weekend with her best friend. She promised her mom she could handle running her family’s escape room business while her mom is out of town. Instead a Satanic cult shows up, claiming that the prop spell book in one of the rooms is the real deal, and they need it to summon the right hand of the devil. Naturally they take Callie and her friend, Mag, along with them. But when the summoning reveals a handsome demon in a leather jacket named Luke who offers to help Callie stop the cult from destroying the world, her night goes from weird to completely strange. As the group tries to stay one step ahead of the cult, Callie finds herself drawn to the annoying (and annoyingly handsome) Luke. But what Callie doesn’t know is that Luke is none other than Luke Morningstar, Prince of Hell and son of the Devil himself. Callie never had time for love, and with the apocalypse coming closer, is there room for romance when all hell’s about to break loose?

Why would a skilled precision machinist want to give up on that life track to pursue a career of violence and danger in the slimy and violent world of the criminal underbelly of a large metropolitan city? Seeking out the answers to questions that many would rather leave unanswered is a skill learned the hard way for a new private eye. Without the tools of a skilled assassin, the strength of a professional leg breaker, or the general pugilistic abilities of a common street thug, Rex Bonner charts his way through the streets and alleys of his town to locate the center of the crux of his case and bring it to a client's approval, dodging hurdles and parrying threats along the way as others get the chance to pay the piper for the life they chose and the horror that fills it.
