Book More Tales Of Saints Scholars

Download or read book More Tales Of Saints Scholars written by Clive Gilson and published by Tales from the World's Firesid. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a second volume of Irish tales, so rich are the story-mining seams taken from just the few Irish collections I have in my possession at the moment. Across the two volumes we have around one hundred and forty tales taken from pretty well every tradition, including classic tales of Irish legend, fairy and folk beliefs, and tales in the vernacular, oral tradition. For the most part these tales are as collected by my Victorian and Edwardian counterparts, but there are one or two tales where I have amended the original to suit modern language tastes and norms. There are also a few stories that clearly share a common root, and appear similar at first reading, but there always seem to be sufficient and interesting differences to keep the reader's attention. I hope you enjoy this ever-growing collection from a grand Irish heritage. These Irish tales have taken a lot of work to collect and sift and prepare, but as ever, I've loved putting this collection together.

Book Catholic Tales for Boys and Girls

Download or read book Catholic Tales for Boys and Girls written by Leslie Silk Eslinger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are twelve of Houselander's best tales, charmingly illustrated with Renee George's lively drawings of pirates and princesses, castles and kings. Through the tale of Jack and Jim, even young children will grasp the meaning of Christ's suffering; in Racla the Gypsy, they'll discover the charity which is at the heart of the Eucharist; in the The Cure's Guest, they'll see how Christ makes up for the sins of others. Other stories touch on other Catholic themes, but these tales are not really catechetical. Yes, they do take, for granted that Catholicism plays a large role in the lives of these children, especially prayer and the Mass. But they do something more ... and more important. Tale after tale introduces children to the tender love that Jesus has for each of them, and to the fire of love for Him that can burn in the heart of Catholics -- even in the hearts of little ones like themselves.

Book excerpt: With her inimitable gift for describing the workings of the heart and mind, Edna O'Brien introduces us to a vivid new cast of restless, searching people who-whether in the Irish countryside or London or New York-remind us of our own humanity. In Send My Roots Rain, Miss Gilhooley, a librarian, waits in the lobby of a posh Dublin hotel-expecting to meet a celebrated poet while reflecting on the great love who disappointed her. The Irish workers of "The Shovel Kings" have pipe dreams of becoming millionaires in London, but long for their quickly changing homeland-exiles in both places. "Green Georgette" is a searing anatomy of class, through the eyes of a little girl; "Old Wounds" illuminates the importance of family and memory in old age. In language that is always bold and vital, Edna O'Brien pays tribute to the universal forces that rule our lives.
